Frieza's Armor Was Never Real Armor, Akira Toriyama Revealed
A resurfaced pamphlet interview changes how I read Frieza's very first transformation in the original manga.
When Frieza was rebuilt through 3D printing in Resurrection F, I remember plenty of fans wondering why his armor came back along with his organic body. That question has an answer now, and it changes how I look at his very first form.
A recently unearthed interview with Akira Toriyama, taken from the Resurrection F movie pamphlet, revealed that Toriyama had always intended for the armor on Frieza's body to actually be part of his first form.
Going back to chapter 296 makes the reveal click into place
Once I went back and reread the original manga with that reveal in mind, it kind of makes sense. In chapter 296, right before Frieza transforms, his armor breaks first, and it breaks off into pieces in a way that looks like it is made from a different material than the armor worn by everyone else around him, including the Saiyans.
That distinction matters because Saiyan armor and the armor used by the Frieza Force is supposed to be flexible. Even Krillin wears a set of it for a time, so we know it is not built to shatter. But Frieza's does shatter the moment he transforms, and that is the clue that something is different about his.
For years I rationalized it as sturdier armor made for Frieza
For many years, Dragon Ball fans, including myself, just rationalized it as being a sturdier armor that was made specifically for Frieza.
With this revelation from Toriyama now in hand, it looks like when Frieza was developing this form, he was able to manipulate his own body to create a biological shield that resembles the armor of the rest of his troops, so that he could fit in among them.
The fourth form proof: no broken armor when Frieza reaches his true form
There is another detail in Resurrection F that backs this up. When Frieza goes from his first form to his fourth form, the armor does not break off at all. That is a notable contrast to the first transformation, where the shattering happens immediately.
The reason it does not break is that his fourth form is his true form, while the other three are forms he created to suppress his own uncontrollable power.
Does this change how you read Frieza's early transformations in the manga?
