Granolah's Wish, God of Destruction Vegeta and Beerus vs Frieza: A Dragon Ball Q&A
From Shenron's wishes to Ultra Instinct stacking, my answers to a round of Dragon Ball Super questions from May 2021
In late May 2021, with the year almost halfway gone, I answered a batch of Dragon Ball questions. They covered the Granolah arc as it was unfolding in the Dragon Ball Super manga, whether Vegeta could ever pick up Ultra Instinct, and how a God of Destruction Vegeta might look. As for Granolah himself, the way he got his power was, in my opinion, the laziest writing in the history of the franchise.
Two wishes from Shenron beat ten Senzu Beans
The first question asked whether I'd rather have ten Senzu Beans or summon Shenron for two wishes. I'd summon the dragon. What good are ten Senzu Beans if I can summon Shenron and wish for something like immortality? I could even wish for a hundred Senzu Beans, or a million. To me, the choice is obvious.
As for what I'd wish for, it would be complete ownership and control of the Dragon Ball franchise for the rest of my life. Then you'd see some good coming out of it.
Frieza will probably fight in the Granolah arc, but I doubt he can keep up
Would Frieza get a power up and fight in this arc, or would he only appear in a few panels watching? I think the manga would show him observing everything first, but I do think he's going to fight.
Whether he gets a power up, I can't say for certain. Even if he does, look at how Granolah performed in the previous chapter and how Goku and Vegeta have kept getting stronger. I don't think Frieza is anywhere close to their level. Unless it's something brand new, I don't see him being able to compete with those guys.
Hakai is a different kind of technique from Ultra Instinct
One question had the relationship backwards. It's Migatte no Gokui that adds to the speed of the Super Saiyan forms, not the other way around. The question was whether we'd see something similar with Vegeta. Vegeta doesn't know Ultra Instinct, so probably not.
If the question means Vegeta incorporating Hakai into his Super Saiyan forms, I don't see the purpose. Hakai is a destruction technique, meant to destroy or to do damage to somebody. Ultra Instinct is a combat technique used both offensively and defensively. It's a very different property.
On whether Vegeta will get Ultra Instinct someday, the longer Dragon Ball Super goes on in the manga, the less likely I think it gets. Part of me still thinks he probably will at some point. I think he should, but way later on, not anytime soon.
A Vegeta childhood special would be great, but flashbacks are more likely
Would there ever be a special looking back at the original Dragon Ball and filling in gaps, like what Vegeta was doing or Mercenary Tao being turned into a cyborg? I'd love to see that, even if it would only amount to a five minute clip. A special on Vegeta's childhood would be cool, something like the Bardock special but about Vegeta. As a Dragon Ball fan, I want to see all this stuff.
Will they ever do it? The longer Super goes on, whether in the anime, the manga or the movies, the less likely it feels. I think anything about Vegeta's childhood will be covered in flashbacks rather than in his own special. If they did give him one, it would be great and would get a lot of viewership, especially internationally if you ask me. I think they should do it, but I don't know if they ever will.
Dragon Ball needs more powerful artifacts besides the Dragon Balls
Another question asked whether the series would explore more things like the Tree of Might from the third Dragon Ball Z movie, and suggested Granolah should have received his power that way instead of through the Dragon Balls. I'd love it if Dragon Ball had more MacGuffins, more sacred objects and artifacts. I love the Tree of Might concept and covered it years ago.
It feels like they're always going after the Dragon Balls. Meanwhile, other fiction like Marvel and DC has the Anti-Life Equation and the Infinity Stones, mystical, powerful objects that do things beyond granting wishes.
That's why I love classic Dragon Ball. You had the Power Pole, you had the Basho fan, and many other objects of power back then. I feel like we don't see that anymore, and I wish they would think outside the box and do stuff like that.
Goku and Vegeta should defeat Granolah, but I don't think they'll kill him
Would Goku and Vegeta beat Granolah in a fight during this arc? I think they will defeat him in battle. I don't think they're going to kill him. Whether that happens in the next chapter or the next battle, I couldn't tell you.
Granolah's wish was the laziest writing in the franchise, in my opinion
One question asked how a dragon that isn't the Super Dragon could grant Granolah's wish to be the strongest in the universe. It seemed like a huge wish that happened too fast and too easily, and it spits in the face of fans who watched characters grind from the 80s to the present to get where they are.
I'd covered this a month earlier. Most people agreed with me, and some said I was being too nitpicky. I'm not. The way Granolah got his power was the laziest writing in the history of this franchise in my opinion. Even if the rest of the arc is amazing and better than chapter 72, they won't be able to erase how bad that chapter from February was.
One bad chapter won't ruin a whole arc for me, but I still don't like it. And no, nothing was missed. They haven't explained how that dragon has that power, and I don't know if they will. I don't know if it even matters anymore.
Granolah's rock exploding move is what I call Entropy
Someone asked whether Granolah has an ability like Aang's in The Last Airbender, since in chapter 70 he seemed to control rock and make it expand outward and explode. I've never seen The Last Airbender, so I couldn't say. But yes, that's the move I called Entropy, and I might cover it fully. Entropy might not be the final name of the move, but it's a name I think fits for now.
A God of Destruction Vegeta might look more dark purple than Rosé
If Goku and Vegeta theoretically became Gods of Destruction, would their Blue form change into Rosé as its divine counterpart? Great question. I don't think so, but if it did, I wouldn't hate it. Blue is already divine, and Rosé works because Zamasu was an unusual character.
I always thought that if Vegeta becomes a God of Destruction or gets that power and transforms, it would be more like a darker purple than a pink, more like Beerus's skin. That could be wrong, though, because Beerus is only one of many Gods of Destruction, and they all look different. It isn't covered in my Rose transformation guide at all. I hadn't even thought of it, and until it happens I can't say much about it.
I hope they don't stack Ultra Instinct on top of Super Saiyan forms, though it wouldn't surprise me
Goku couldn't stack Ultra Instinct on Super Saiyan 1 or Blue, but would the series eventually go that route? I hope not, because the way they were doing it makes more sense. Ultra Instinct is only a transformation when Goku uses the silver haired form. That's the only time it works as a transformation.
I hope it becomes a thing where Goku learns more and more about the properties of Ultra Instinct as he evolves. That said, if they did stack it, I wouldn't be surprised.
With ki control, I'd take Beerus over Frieza
The last question might be one of my favorite questions I've ever gotten: if I had the ki control of Beerus or Frieza, along with their powers, which would I pick, and would I spend my time blasting planets? I'd pick Beerus. He's way more advanced in ki control than Frieza, with far deeper knowledge of martial arts, training under Whis and learning Hakai energy.
Forget the power for a moment. As a fighter, Beerus is mentally so far beyond Frieza, both in knowledge and in combat.
As for blasting planets, if I had those powers I probably wouldn't even be doing this. I'd probably be out blasting planets. But I'd also worry that somebody else had those powers, which would turn into an Invincible type situation, fighting other meta humans in a big battle, and then the whole world is in trouble. If people out there have powers like that, you've got bigger problems than anything on a screen.
