10 Call of Duty Guns That Completely Lied to Us in Their Trailers
From the HG40 to the EM1, these were the multiplayer weapons that looked incredible in the marketing and then fell apart the moment we actually used them.
10. The HG40 in Black Ops 3 was hyped as a futuristic MP40 and turned into the worst SMG in the game
Treyarch announced the HG40 as a futuristic remake of the classic MP40, and this was the first time the MP40 was going to be in a Call of Duty multiplayer since the completely busted version that was in World at War.
Getting it was its own ordeal. We spent hundreds of dollars on supply drops, spinning the roulette wheel many, many times without pulling it, then spent a few more hundred before finally getting lucky. Once we had it, the HG40 turned out to be the worst SMG in the game. It was bouncy, slow, inconsistent, and straight up terrible, and they really expected us to be excited about pulling it out of a supply drop.
"It was absolutely fitting in my definition of a fake gun," because the hype was crazy, it looked awesome, we were all hyped to use it, and then it fell apart. To my understanding, Treyarch eventually buffed it and made it actually worth using.
9. The AN94 looked like a Black Ops 2 legend reborn in Modern Warfare 2019, then it fell apart
The AN94 was a fan favorite in Black Ops 2, an awesome gun that some people would even call the best in that game. So naturally, when we saw it in one of the first DLC trailers for Modern Warfare 2019, we were freaking out about how much of a beast it was going to be again.
That did not happen. The AN94 in Modern Warfare 2019 was bad. Damage was weak and the recoil was unpredictable, two attributes that entirely killed the appeal of the gun in the first place. The Black Ops 2 version was super consistent and easy to control, but the Modern Warfare 2019 version was the opposite and way too bouncy unless you loaded it with a lot of attachments, which just slowed it down to the point of being useless. It was a huge letdown after the trailers made it look like it was going to be just as good as its Black Ops 2 era self, and it was not.
8. The ice pick in COD World War II was gruesome in the trailer and useless compared to the shovel
This is not a gun, but it earns a spot because people were stoked for it in the trailer and everybody stopped using it because it actually sucked for whatever reason. COD World War II only launched with one melee weapon, the shovel, so people were excited to see what other World War II era weapons would get added, and the ice pick was one of the first.
It looked awesome, with some gruesome effects playing during the kill animation, but it was worse than the shovel for some reason I am really not sure was intentional. The ice pick had way worse range than the shovel, and the animation often took longer to complete, which left you vulnerable to enemy gunfire while killing somebody. The shovel was quick, efficient, and had pretty good range.
The ice pick was just awkward to use in comparison and put you at an objective disadvantage. I have no idea if it was intentional or not, but there was no reason to use it over the shovel, and it was a huge letdown after we all got hyped seeing it in the community event trailer. We got bamboozled.
7. The Type 2 split into akimbo FMG9s in the Infinite Warfare trailers and disappeared within a week
The Type 2 was a laser assault rifle that could split into two, converting into akimbo FMG9s, which was really cool.
In reality, the Type 2 was mediocre, and some even called it one of the worst guns in the game. In assault rifle mode it was bouncy and weak, a fast firing rifle with an average time to kill. Split into the akimbo FMG9 mode, it turned into a hit marker machine with bad accuracy. In the early promotional material for Infinite Warfare, the Type 2 was featured prominently, especially in its akimbo mode, but in the full release it really was not that good, and you barely ever saw it online after the first week once people figured out it sucked.
6. The RSA Interdiction promised quickscoping with aim assist and turned out to be one of the worst snipers in Black Ops 3
The amount of hype flying around the community when the RSA Interdiction was announced was mind blowing. It was a bolt action sniper rifle that had aim assist, unlike all the other bolt actions, and we all thought this was going to be the quickscoping monster.
By now you all know that was not how it went. The RSA Interdiction was actually one of the worst snipers in the game, because while it did have aim assist, it was also laughably weak with a pretty slow fire rate. So even though it was easy to land shots, it was actually really hard to get the kills. If you were dedicated to quickscoping, you were much better off using the Locust and learning how to not rely on aim assist.
5. The community begged for the Vendetta sniper in Black Ops 4 and forgot it existed the moment it arrived
The community was begging Treyarch for a DLC sniper for a long, long time, and it legitimately took Treyarch months to add one. When they finally did, we all instantly forgot about it because it was really, really bad and barely even functioned like a sniper.
The Vendetta was basically a worse version of the KRM tactical rifle: semi auto, low recoil, high fire rate, and horrible damage that typically required three to four shots to kill somebody. That is not the kind of sniper rifle the community is going to get excited about or rally around. The hype was ridiculous when Treyarch announced they were adding a sniper, but all the other snipers were already there on day one, and everyone was utterly disappointed and never picked up the Vendetta again.
4. The Drakon was supposed to be an old school throwback sniper in Black Ops 3 and felt like nothing from the old days
Black Ops 3 had some amazing sniper rifles, and we were all pretty interested at the time in the Drakon because it looked like it was going to be an awesome throwback weapon to the classic days of COD4 and even Modern Warfare 2, which was Treyarch's stated intention. We thought it would feel super old school and hit like a truck like the snipers did back in the day.
Instead, the Drakon turned out to be completely useless, and you still had to open supply drops for hours before maybe unlocking it. It was clunky, slow, inconsistent, and did not feel like an old school sniper at all. I was there for the old school snipers myself, and even though some of them were clunky and slow, none of them felt like this or were this unsatisfying to use. The community hyped up this old school DLC sniper and never thought about it again because it sucked.
3. The AK47 in Advanced Warfare was supposed to dethrone the bow and could not compete with it
The AK47 is iconic, and Advanced Warfare as a game was entirely dominated by one rifle, the bow. So when we first heard about the AK47 coming to the game, we thought this was it, that it was going to kick the bow off the top of the mountain, or at least we were hoping it would.
In reality, the Advanced Warfare AK47 was a mid version of the gun that was not bad, but it also was not very good, and it was not going to hold a candle to the bow, which meant nobody was going to use it. It also used the Modern Warfare 3 weapon model instead of something more traditional, though since Sledgehammer made both Advanced Warfare and the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer, I guess it makes sense. Regardless, it was not very good despite being an AK47.
2. The XMG dual wielded miniguns looked game changing in the Advanced Warfare trailer and put you at a total disadvantage
When the trailer showed off dual wielded miniguns, we really thought this was going to be a life changing event, that we were not even going to recognize the game as something in the Call of Duty franchise. Then we actually used the LMGs and immediately set them down gently, or threw them down, because they sucked.
The LMGs definitely looked intimidating, and there is definitely some cool ultra boss feeling about running around with two giant miniguns strapped to your arms. But the way they functioned in the game was bad. You had to plant yourself in one spot to get any accuracy, and even then they were not reliable at all because of the bullet spread. Nobody actually used the LMGs in Advanced Warfare, despite how cool they looked, because they put you at a total disadvantage on the battlefield.
There is also one more Advanced Warfare gun that got the same trailer treatment, featured heavily in the marketing, that got everyone freaking out before we used it and quietly put it down again, going back to spamming the bow on the ASM1 instead.
1. The EM1 laser beam cannon looked like the most powerful gun in Advanced Warfare and could not even land an instant kill in hardcore
The EM1 was a giant laser beam cannon and one of the worst guns in the game. It fired one continuous beam of energy that dealt constant damage to anybody it hit, but the damage it put out per tick was low.
It just made you feel like an idiot with a feather duster as opposed to a super soldier with an exo suit and a giant laser beam. The EM1 hit for a maximum of 18 damage per tick, so it did not really matter that it was dealing constant damage, because the time to kill was slow.
On top of that, it would overheat every four and a half seconds, which is all the time you would get before it shut down. So you had a horrible time to kill, constant overheating, and a damage profile so bad you could not even get an instant kill in hardcore modes. We all thought this thing was going to be game breaking when we saw it in the trailers, and we were wrong. And to be clear, this is about the regular EM1, not the legendary variants.
Which of these do you think was the biggest letdown compared to its trailer?
