Black Ops 4 Ending Explained: How Woods, Mason and Savannah's Project Blackout Fit Together
Woods worked with Savannah and used Black Ops brainwashing to control Mason, and the final cutscene hints that both men became Blackout archetypes
Woods and Mason's story in Black Ops 4 ends in an audio exchange. In it, Woods, who has been working with Savannah, uses the old Black Ops brainwashing techniques to keep Mason compliant. The final cutscene also adds a lot of weight to the theory that both men now exist as archetypes within Project Blackout.
Unlike most Call of Duty games, Black Ops 4 does not have a typical campaign. In its place are minor cutscenes, brief exchanges and audio segments. In this piece I am pulling those elements together to break down Woods and Mason's overall story. Major spoilers follow, so if you have yet to complete the game, it may be worth skipping this for now.
Savannah's Project Blackout clones elite dead soldiers as archetypes
To fully understand the meaning behind the final exchange between Woods and Mason, we first need to break down Savannah's overall plan, Project Blackout. Savannah is Mason's granddaughter and is "just an all-round bad egg".
Project Blackout is a process in which highly reputable dead soldiers are cloned and trained to a Black Ops level. That training takes place in an area called Blackout, hence the name Project Blackout. These cloned soldiers are referred to as archetypes, and it is revealed that Woods and Mason are among their ranks.
Savannah's sister, Jessica, is onto this plan. Because of that, Savannah needs her killed, and that is where Woods comes in.
Woods was working with Savannah and brainwashing Mason
In the end, it turns out that Woods has been working with Savannah in order to kill Jessica. Woods has been using the brainwashing techniques from Black Ops to control Mason. This is why we hear an audio file called Mason's Ladder, in which Woods reads the numbers out loud to Mason.
In the final exchange between the two, Woods tells Mason "it was you in a box, it always was." This is meant to make Mason more compliant. The line refers to the scene in Black Ops 2 where Mason and Hudson rescue Woods from a shipping container.
The asylum cutscene suggests Woods and Mason now exist in Project Blackout
The final cutscene takes place in the asylum area of the Blackout map. That location adds a lot of weight to the theory that both Woods and Mason now exist in Project Blackout.
Players who journey to the same spot in Blackout can find a note written by Mason. It shows the faces of the Specialists with their names written underneath. Woods, Mason, Menendez and Reznov were all available characters, and they had been confirmed to be archetypes in Project Blackout.
Savannah may be an archetype herself
There is also a lot of evidence to support the theory that Savannah is in fact an archetype herself. In one of the cutscenes, we can clearly see another person sitting next to Savannah on her bed.
This person looks identical to her and could be her archetype.
The Black Ops 4 story was still being pieced together through Easter eggs
At the time I put this breakdown together, a wealth of Easter eggs was still being uncovered in the game. A regularly updated Reddit thread tracking new developments massively helped me put this breakdown together. There was still a lot to uncover at that point, and the pieces of information were constantly evolving, so some details may have shifted as players dug deeper.
That leaves the bigger question about Black Ops 4's approach to storytelling. Do you enjoy piecing together the tidbits of information the game gives you, or would you prefer an overall linear narrative?
