Dragon Ball Super color pages suggest Granolah may know Hakai
The colored manga shows Granolah's blast turning targets to purple tinged dust, much like Beerus and Vegeta, though his vanishing act may not be Instant Transmission
The colored release of the Dragon Ball Super manga gave us interesting new clues about Granolah's power that we didn't have before, and to me they point toward Granolah knowing Hakai. His blast turns what it hits into dust, it's purple, and the way it's drawn is very similar, if not identical, to how Vegeta's Hakai looks in his training with Beerus.
This is why colors are important in the Dragon Ball Super manga. Before getting to the Hakai evidence, though, there's one ability the color pages suggest Granolah may not have.
The Dragon Ball Super color pages changed how I read Granolah
A few months ago I looked at the possibility of Granolah having Hakai. I was a little bit skeptical at the time, because we didn't have enough empirical data to prove whether or not he actually had it.
Part of the problem is that the Dragon Ball Super manga is black and white when it's first released. That makes it difficult to really get into what these characters have. With transformations, for example, it can be hard to tell what form Goku is using, because so much of Dragon Ball is color. The manga does get a color release, but it comes out months after the black and white version. With the color volumes, we got some interesting tips about Granolah.
Granolah's vanishing act may not be Instant Transmission
First, what Granolah doesn't seem to have. It looks like he doesn't have Instantaneous Movement, also known as Instant Transmission. I think Granolah has an updated or different version of the technique, but if we're basing it on this manga chapter alone, or at least on one image from it, the way he disappears isn't quite the same as the way Goku does.
Obviously there are similarities in the movement, and it might look different if an anime version ever comes out. But the way Granolah kind of fades, and then fades back in with a white aura around him, tells me it might not be the same thing. To be fair, the manga never said it was Instantaneous Movement.
That remains to be seen. Instantaneous Movement isn't a technique of the gods. It's one the Yardrats know, and Goku and Vegeta know it too. So that's still up in the air.
Granolah's blast turns targets to dust the way Beerus's Hakai does
Hakai is another matter. We now have more evidence that Granolah may indeed know it. Look at Beerus using Hakai in the Dragon Ball Super manga. When he does it, whatever he blasts sort of turns into sand. It's a kind of particle destruction or annihilation, or "particle reversal if you want to use Ghostbusters terms." Beerus fires the blast, and the target turns to dust.
Now look at Granolah when he first fires his blast. Once again the target turns into dust, and it's also purple. That's very interesting. I discussed with someone what Granolah's version of this move might be, and he called it entropy.
Does this confirm that Granolah has Hakai? It looks like he might at least have knowledge of it. He was never formally trained in it the way Vegeta was, so you would assume Vegeta has more knowledge of it. But when Granolah does it, it looks just like Hakai: it's purple and it vaporizes stuff. To me, the evidence is there. I'd say it's 90 percent probably Hakai.
Vegeta's Hakai training panels share Granolah's purple background
Other panels back this up. There's the one where Vegeta learns to use Hakai after training with Beerus. When he destroys a little pebble with it, the paneling has a purple background. You can't see colors in the original black and white manga, so either Toyotaro instructed the colorists to do this, or they just kind of knew, maybe from his notes or Toriyama's notes, that it's a purple background.
We see that same purple background when Granolah does his move and vaporizes his target. In a closer shot of Vegeta, there's the purple with little black lines or streams coming off it. The way that's drawn is very similar, if not identical, between the two. For context, this is the panel where Goku, Whis and the Oracle Fish are watching Vegeta train, when he first learned how to use Hakai, before he learned his Ultra Ego form.
Those lines could just be action movement, or they could be confirmation that Granolah knows Hakai, or at least a version of it, which we've called entropy.
I believed the next color volume would show Ultra Ego
What excited me at the time was that, based on the chapter counts, I believed the next colored volume would show Ultra Ego in color. That would let us see whether Vegeta has black hair or purple hair in the form.
Most of the fan art used purple hair, while some used black with purple lines or purple energy. We didn't have an official look at Ultra Ego's colors yet, which is another example of why the color releases matter.
Granolah never says Hakai, but I don't think he needs to
Granolah hasn't used the word Hakai. He probably doesn't know about Hakai energy, or maybe he does know and just doesn't want to say it. Sometimes when Goku fires a Kamehameha, he doesn't say Kamehameha; he just says ha. As I see it, "you don't have to say the name of a move to actually execute the move." Calling out move names is done for dramatic effect, and you see it in Street Fighter, Power Rangers and Super Sentai, and of course Dragon Ball.
So doing Hakai doesn't mean saying Hakai. It could just be that Granolah knows the move but doesn't know what to call it. The same goes for his version of Instant Transmission: he may not know the move is called Instantaneous Movement, but he just does it.
I think the evidence speaks for itself at this point. To me, this is more than enough evidence that Granolah knows Hakai, but "that's only my opinion though and I'm only one man."
Do you think Granolah's purple blast is Hakai or not?
