Why Gogeta Blue Stood as Dragon Ball's Strongest Fusion After Super Broly
Broly's relentless escalation, a Potara retcon, and a hint of true power in the Japanese novel all point to Gogeta Blue towering over every fusion before him.
Gogeta Blue, the fusion of Goku and Vegeta from Dragon Ball Super: Broly, is without question the most powerful fusion Dragon Ball had shown up to that point. I've brought back the Strongest in Dragon Ball series to make that case, because I think he's "a complete monster." The series looks at the most powerful characters in Dragon Ball, why they're so well regarded, and why they were frighteningly strong during their time in the story.
I've covered fusion in this series before, with Vegito and with Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta from Dragon Ball GT. I never got to Gogeta Blue. At the time I put this together, Dragon Ball Super: Broly was the first time we'd ever seen Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta in an official capacity. Vegito Blue comes into this too, because there's a relation between the two fusions that matters further down.
Broly Kept Getting Stronger, So Gogeta Had No Choice but to Go Blue
I think it's safe to assume most of you have seen Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Broly was a titanic terror who was impossible to beat if it was only Goku and Vegeta in their Blue forms. So Goku teleports Vegeta to where Piccolo was and quickly shows him the fusion pose. After failing twice, they finally form Gogeta. That was also the first time we ever saw base Gogeta in an official Dragon Ball anime.
Gogeta first fought Broly in base, then went up to Super Saiyan, and then chose to go Super Saiyan Blue. As the fight escalated, Broly showed more and more power and got stronger the longer they fought, something Vegeta had referenced earlier in the film. It was almost as if Gogeta had no choice but to go Blue.
Some think regular Super Saiyan Gogeta, or even the red-haired god form, could probably have beaten Broly. I completely disagree. If that were the case, why didn't Gogeta do that instead? He had to go to Blue. Even though Gogeta had the upper hand for most of the fight, and at no point did it seem like he would lose, Broly kept coming. He wasn't going to be one-shotted. He can take punishment, and he took plenty of it from Gogeta.
Gogeta had to implement a real strategy because of how hard Broly came after him and how hard he was to beat. That strategy let him finally defeat Broly, and he almost killed him if it wasn't for Cheelai warping him across the universe to Vampa.
Gogeta Blue Towers Over Kefla, Gotenks and Merged Zamasu
So how strong was Gogeta Blue? He was the most powerful fusion we'd seen up until that point. In the future we may see an Ultra Instinct version of Gogeta or Vegito, but at that point Gogeta Blue towered over Kefla. He was absolutely more powerful than Gotenks. He was also more powerful than Merged Zamasu, the one Vegito fought in Dragon Ball Super episode 66.
The big question, of course, is Vegito Blue. When we saw Vegito Blue fight Merged Zamasu, he was a fusion of Goku and Vegeta, and whether you're talking about Potara or Metamoran fusion, the result depends on the power of the individual users. If Krillin and Yamcha fused, the fusion would be strong, but nowhere near as strong as any of these Saiyans, because the original users aren't that strong.
The Goku and Vegeta of Broly Were Far Beyond the Pair That Formed Vegito Blue
The Goku and Vegeta in the Broly movie were several leaps and bounds above the Goku and Vegeta from the Trunks arc. They trained hard all throughout Dragon Ball Super, but after the Tournament of Power, Goku had his body exposed to Ultra Instinct. He did tons of training, got beat up, learned a lot about fighting, and trained more with Whis.
Vegeta tapped into Blue Evolution and possibly more Zenkai. Both of them were at their absolute strongest up to that point. They've continued to get stronger since, but that raises the real question: what if they had done Vegito Blue in the Broly movie instead of Gogeta?
Dragon Ball Super Changed the Potara Versus Metamoran Debate
In the original manga, the Old Kai implied that Potara fusion was better than Metamoran fusion. It had no time limit, which was before the Dragon Ball Super retcon, and it also produced better results. For a long time many of us in the community, including me, thought Vegito was stronger than Gogeta because of what he said and how well the Potara fusion performed.
Then Dragon Ball Super came along with two major points that changed things. First, the time limit for Potara fusion among mortals changed to one hour. That was a complete retroactive continuity moment; there's no way to slice it. Vegito did defuse in the original manga, but it was never explained why. We all thought it was because of what Goku said, that the atmosphere inside Majin Buu caused it, but that doesn't appear to be the case now.
Second, during the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, a magazine article stated that Gogeta and Vegito were relative to each other. In other words, they're right around the same power, so it doesn't matter which fusion Goku and Vegeta use.
I Think Ki Control Explains Why Gogeta Blue Didn't Defuse Early
Things get weird here. Would you rather use the one hour fusion with Vegito Blue or the 30 minute Metamoran fusion with Gogeta Blue? You'd think the one hour version is more effective because you have more time. But these guys put out so much power that Vegito Blue's fusion ended early, while Gogeta Blue's did not. Why?
I don't know if I have a definitive answer. One possibility is that the fight between Gogeta and Broly was going on at 10 times the speed we could see, slowed down through cinematic timing so we could watch it. These characters are way beyond the speed of light at this point. That's up for debate, though, and I'm not going to die on that hill, because we don't know how fast that fight was.
What we do know from the most elementary power scaling is that Gogeta Blue was putting out way more power against Broly than Vegito was. You'd think they would have unfused faster. The meta reason is that the creators wanted Gogeta Blue to beat Broly and didn't want to write themselves into a corner by having Gogeta unfuse.
The only in-universe reason that makes sense to me is that Gogeta Blue had much greater ki control than Broly. I think this makes sense when you see the film: he was able to time his energy into each shot he hit Broly with, not outputting much until the time came to strike. This has been talked about in the manga and other parts of Dragon Ball over the years, and I think a much stronger and smarter combination of Goku and Vegeta could output energy in a far more intelligent way.
The Broly Novel Says Gogeta Blue Showed a Hint of His True Power
One aspect many of us didn't cover comes from the Dragon Ball Super: Broly novel released in Japan. It's a novel, not a manga, all text, and it stated that Gogeta Blue did show a hint of his true power. That tells you how strong Broly was, and it tells you Gogeta Blue was not playing around.
Then there's simple scaling back to Z. When Buu was fighting Vegito, Buu cracked the fabric of space and time, and Vegito was able to punch through that barrier and knock him down. That feat was elevated tenfold in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, where we watched Gogeta and Broly's fight shatter the dimensional fabric of space and time.
They enter a strange void that some theorize is the same alternate dimension Hit goes into when he uses his time skip, but we can't confirm that; it only has similar colors. We see them battling beyond what we perceive as Universe 7. We hadn't seen a feat like that in Dragon Ball Super. The closest was some of what Ultra Instinct Goku did against Jiren, but not to this degree, and certainly nothing in the fight between Vegito Blue and Zamasu.
Every Future Gogeta or Vegito Should Be Stronger Still
Either way, we know Vegito Blue is stronger than the Vegito from Dragon Ball Z. To me, it's not difficult to understand that Goku and Vegeta will keep improving in power, and their fusions will elevate along with them. If we ever see Gogeta or Vegito again, they'll be even stronger than any Gogeta or Vegito we've seen before in the Dragon Ball story.
