Dragon Ball Super Remake Episode Count Revealed: Beerus Arc Will Reportedly Run 20 Episodes, and I'm Worried About How Toei Is Splitting Them
From what I'm hearing, the Dragon Ball Super enhanced edition breaks down to 6 episodes for Battle of Gods, 7 for Resurrection F, and 7 for the Universe 6 arc, and I don't think that math adds up given how much story Universe 6 actually has.
I've got a full news roundup on both the Dragon Ball Super Beerus remake and the Moro arc, and I brought on Uchi from Uchi Reacts and Uchi Games to talk through it with me. If you've been waiting to hear real numbers on how long this remake is going to be and when Moro is actually coming, this is the update.
This matters because fans have been asking for months how Toei is going to handle bringing Dragon Ball Super back, and the episode breakdown changes how much of the Universe 6 story we're actually going to get to see.
The Dragon Ball Super Beerus Remake Is Reportedly 20 Episodes Total
A couple weeks ago I put out a video about major cuts being made to the Champa arc. It was originally reported by myself, Venixis, and several other insiders that the Champa arc of this Dragon Ball Super enhanced edition would run 10 episodes. From what I'm now hearing, that's not the case anymore. It's down to seven episodes. That breaks down to six episodes for Battle of Gods, seven for Resurrection F, and seven for Champa slash Universe 6, which comes out to 20 episodes overall, airing from October to February, possibly bleeding into early spring but most likely wrapping in February.
I Think Giving Resurrection F and Universe 6 Equal Time Is a Mistake
What I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is how Resurrection F gets seven episodes while Universe 6, which has way more material, also gets seven. Universe 6 introduces roughly ten new characters: the five members of Universe 6, Vados, Champa, Zuno, Tights being brought into the anime for the first time, and Monaka. Counting Zeno, who's also revealed in that stretch, that's eleven new characters getting squeezed into the same space as Resurrection F. As I put it during the stream, "It's not just the episode count... it's the fact that there's literally more story in Universe 6 than there is [in Resurrection F]." I made the comparison directly: if the argument is that Frieza deserves more time because he's tough, then by that logic Hit, who's stated to be far stronger than Frieza, should get five episodes to himself. Uchi's guess as to why Toei might be doing this is that they could be using the extra Resurrection F time to expand training and buildup sequences we didn't see much of before, though neither of us is sure that's actually the plan.
Clearing Up Confusion Over Toei's Animation Schedule and the Moro Arc's Release Window
People have been misreading Toei's tentative release schedule, and I wanted to correct it directly. The chart lists Dragon Ball Super Beerus for fall 2026, Sparking Zero's Super Limit Breaking Neo content, and then for 2027 you've got Sparking Zero's Xenoverse 3, plus the Dragon Ball theme park and Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol, which is the Moro arc, listed under a TBA section. A lot of people are assuming that TBA means 2028. It doesn't. As I explained, "2027 dash guys means 2027 and beyond," and TBA simply means "they don't have a date of when this is going to come out yet."
Moro Arc Production Update: They're Already Working on Majin Buu vs. Moro
On the Geekdom 101 Patreon on August 2nd, I reported that production was already underway on the Majin Buu versus Moro sequence at that point, which is a significant chunk into the arc. I'm not revealing who told me that. Here's why I think that's actually good news: Dragon Ball Super was announced in April 2015 with only about two months of pre-production beforehand. By comparison, the Galactic Patrol arc has had over a year, maybe a year and a half, of development time. Because episodes keep being produced while earlier ones air, the same way Toei was still finishing episodes 17 through 20 of Daima while episode 1 was airing, I said I wouldn't be worried about Moro slipping to 2028. My own read, which I've held since January, is that it's likely to start sometime in 2027 and could run into 2028. A commenter raised the idea that Moro could be split into two separate seasons, and I said that's possible, though I can't confirm it.
Yamamuro, Not Shintani, Is Reportedly Still the Lead Character Designer for Moro
People keep assuming that because Toyotaro's original key art for the Moro arc was designed by Shintani, he's the one leading the animation. From what I understand, that's not accurate. Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who has been involved in Dragon Ball Super and did some of the most beloved sequences in Z, including most of Goku versus Majin Vegeta, is still the lead character designer, and Shintani is one of the animators working on it rather than the lead. As I put it, "For the big episodes... Yamamuro is still the lead character designer from what I understand." I'd expect the major fights and training sequences to get the top artists, while some of the slower moments carry more of Yamamuro's style, similar to what happened with episode 18 of Daima. I want to be upfront that I don't have this double sourced, and I said on stream, "I'll be the first one to tell you that I hope I'm wrong" if I've got any of it backwards.
Will Super Saiyan 4 Show Up in the Beerus Remake? I'm Not Sure, But I Hope So
A viewer asked why the enhanced edition wouldn't at least reference Super Saiyan 4 or Ultra Vegeta 1 from Daima now that they're remaking the Beerus arc. I told him I don't think we'll see full Super Saiyan 4 in Battle of Gods, though I can't say that for certain. I haven't personally seen any Super Saiyan 4 production materials for this remake, but that doesn't rule it out since voice recording is handled by a separate department from animation. Based on what I've heard about this enhanced edition, along with other insiders including Venixus and Chronicles who were told the same thing, most of the changes are going to be visual enhancements and cuts meant to bring the story closer to Toriyama's original vision, not dramatic new scenes like Super Saiyan God fighting Golden Frieza. My personal hope, and I stressed this is just a hope, is that if Super Saiyan 4 Goku fights Beerus at all, he at least lands a hit before getting smacked down, just to give the form a moment of relevance.
Why Daima Never Explained What Happened to Super Saiyan 4
One thing that still bothers me is that Daima never gave a real explanation for why Super Saiyan 4 didn't carry forward. Even one line would have done it. Part of the reason may be timing: according to Daima's director, Toriyama was still writing the second half of the show while the first half was already in production, which suggests he may have had more story planned, possibly explaining Super Saiyan 4's fate, that we'll never get now that he's passed away.
No, Dragon Ball Isn't Going Back to Being Called "Z"
Someone asked if the franchise will ever be renamed back to Dragon Ball Z once the story moves past the end of Z. I don't think there's any guarantee the story even continues past that point yet, since nothing has been confirmed beyond comments Toriyama and Toyotaro made years ago. As for the name, I don't see any scenario where it reverts to just "Z." My reasoning is pure marketing logic: "That doesn't make sense with why it was even called Dragon Ball Z to begin with." A rename to something like "Dragon Ball Super Z" is possible, but going back to plain Z isn't happening. I also don't think Toei will chase a name like "Dragon Ball Ultra," because in Japanese the word "Cho" used for "Super" can also translate to "Ultra," which is exactly why Vegeta's line "Cho Vegeta" got subtitled as "Ultra Vegeta 1" instead of Super Vegeta, to avoid confusion with his earlier transformation against Cell.
My Frustration With How Poorly Dragon Ball Gets Promoted
I also touched on why Dragon Ball projects seem to get so little marketing push compared to their popularity, something Uchi has discussed before, framing it as Dragon Ball having "afforded itself to not market or promote itself anymore" because the brand is popular enough that news breaks through content creators regardless. I still think that's a mistake, and I pointed out that Dragon Ball Daima did surprisingly well internationally despite a lot of criticism both before and after release, even though I was critical of it myself in my own review.
Do you think Toei is making a mistake giving Resurrection F the same episode count as the Universe 6 arc, or is there a reason the shorter Frieza story deserves that much room?
