Agatha All Along episode 6 Easter eggs: Billy Kaplan details

Episode 6 of Agatha All Along was Billy Kaplan's backstory, and when it came out I picked up a handful of Easter eggs and small details that I thought were worth pointing out. Some are visual, some are hints at comics characters, and one is a scene that I think is the most Marvel accurate Agatha moment I have seen.

Agatha All Along (2024) stars Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza. This episode follows William Kaplan, the teenager who goes by Billy and who we had come to know on the Witches' Road as Billy Maximoff.

Lilia's tower card in reverse foreshadows Billy's car accident

Lilia has another premonition in this episode. Usually that's when she blurts something out or names a tarot card that relates to something in the future or something happening in the moment. This time it's the tower card in reverse, which means a crisis is looming on the horizon and you are doing everything you can to stop that change from happening. Her line to him is "enjoy the now baby, it's the only thing that's certain."

That card foreshadows the car accident William is going to be in. It also ties into the fact that Lilia puts a sigil on him, to try to stop that from happening and to stop the witches from finding him.

The cool thing about this scene is the crystal ball on the table while she reads his fortune. In it there's a flipped reflection of the Billy Maximoff we've seen on the Witches' Road, in the outfit we know and love him in. It's as if we're seeing his lifeline split in two.

Lilia's sigil explains why Wanda couldn't find her son

We now know the sigil Lilia put on Billy was what caused the Multiverse of Madness. It was why Wanda couldn't see her son. Maybe both sons, but at the very least we know it was Billy.

We've also learned that there was a cut scene where Alice interrogated Billy Kaplan's father and couldn't hear his name for the entire investigation. I like that idea, but I understand it was cut for time.

Eddie hints at Teddy Altman, also known as Hulkling

Eddie, Billy's boyfriend, carries some hints toward a character who is also in the series' orbit: Teddy Altman, who is half Kree, half Skrull, and a member of the Young Avengers.

Eddie explains that the Hex was an Avengers training exercise gone wrong. That's what most of the normal people in the Marvel universe have been told, to cover up Wanda's involvement. He also mentions aliens, which would connect to Hulkling's alien origins.

Eddie also texts Billy a black heart. That could reflect the black heart Lilia draws on the coven members' note when she can't remember Billy's name or say who he is.

Billy's reality warping shows up in small moments with his parents

A main part of Billy's powers is reality warping, and there are subtle hints of it throughout the episode. Billy demands that his parents stop fighting, and they then get along. He tells them they should stop worrying about him, and then they relax, putting on movies and working, possibly even one of his favorite movies.

They're also very relaxed about Eddie being around the house and very accepting of Billy being gay, going as far as making Eddie's favorite food when he isn't even there.

With Teddy, I could see this going the same way. Billy calls Eddie his Prince Charming, which would hint at Hulkling being an actual prince, as in the comics. A main worry of Teddy's in the comics is that he's being molded into what Billy wants. We see a version of that with Eddie too. He wasn't sold on the mission at first, then easily goes along with it, which is something Billy wanted from him. There's also the comment about Eddie's arms. That could be nothing, just kids flirting, but Teddy is also very strong as Hulkling.

Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz posters in Billy's room

In Billy's room there are posters for Alice in Wonderland. If you believe the theory about Tommy's identity, that could fit into it, with Billy as Alice and his brother Tommy as the White Rabbit.

There's also The Wizard of Oz. There have been many references to it already, and Lilia's trial was set to be Wizard of Oz themed.

One smaller detail: Jen's skincare account only has 1.8 thousand followers. That's interesting to me, because I definitely thought she was a star beauty influencer of her time.

Agatha's pep talk to Billy is the most Marvel accurate Agatha moment

Then there's the part where Agatha and Billy talk on the road. It's the most Marvel accurate Agatha moment I think I have seen. In the comics, Agatha is a mentor to Wanda, especially when she's a ghost on the Witches' Road. Here she's giving Billy, the kid she essentially helped Wanda raise, even if only briefly, the pep talk she wished her own mother had given her: that there was nothing wrong with her powers.

"Don't you dare feel guilty about your talent," she tells him. She shouldn't feel apologetic about being powerful, and there's nothing wrong with him. Breaking the rules is what kept him alive and what makes him special. That is so telling about her character. She always wanted to be a mother, she didn't want to lose her son, she's caring about those things, and she wished her mother had been better. There are scars from that, and it's powerful.

The tears in Kathryn Hahn's eyes during that speech say so much about Agatha. Despite putting up a wall, being tough, being the witch killer and the loner, that is not Agatha at her core. Agatha is still the scared little girl her mother called a monster, and she doesn't want Billy to be that way.

Generational trauma and why witches stick together

Agatha has said before that there will always be torches and pitchforks for women like her and Wanda. I think she holds that dear, and she's trying to shelter Billy from it. It builds a generational trauma theme. Wanda is considered a monster. Agatha is considered a monster. Billy has parts of his mother's powers in him, so he could be seen as a monster too, and he could also be seen as one because he is the soul inside a dead child.

When Agatha takes the moment to comfort him, even though they're at odds, I love her very much, and I love this show very much. There's so much love in it, and that's something important in witch media: you have to stick together whether you get along or not. It happens in The Craft too, when everybody turns on the main girl, and at the end they're still trying to bond. She's nice about it, but she doesn't want to be friends with them anymore. It's the same kind of thing.

The questions episode 6 left open

At the time, I had a few questions. Were we going to get Alice back, given that we didn't see where Alice and Rio were in this episode? Would Lilia's trial give us any insight into what she saw in her premonitions along the way? And does Agatha actually care about Billy, or does she care about getting his power?

Whatever the answer to that last one, the scene on the road showed me an Agatha who is still that scared little girl at heart, trying to spare Billy what was done to her.
