Agatha All Along Episode 6 Explained: How Billy Kaplan Became Wanda's Son

Billy Kaplan's death, his Maximoff soul, Agatha's hint that the Scarlet Witch is alive, and what Marvel's midseason trailer showed about Lilia, Jen and Rio

Agatha All Along episode 6 brought Billy Maximoff, the son of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, into the series. The episode explained how Wanda's son was reincarnated into the body of a boy named Billy Kaplan. It also left some questions, but Marvel Studios had already answered several of them with footage it released in a midseason trailer.

Below I cover the big parts of the episode, the comic book backstory that helps explain them, and what all of it suggested for the Maximoff family: the Scarlet Witch, Billy, his brother Tommy and Vision.

Ralph Bohner's return showed what Westview cost its residents

This was a big WandaVision episode of Agatha. In WandaVision, Wanda took over the town of Westview, and here we got an insight into what it was like to be one of the people she controlled. That firsthand account came from Ralph Bohner. Evan Peters returned, unfortunately not as Quicksilver, but Ralph Bohner returning was exciting nonetheless.

Ralph is messed up now. He was taken over by the Scarlet Witch, and then Agatha came along, controlled him, took over his house and destroyed his life. Nobody in Westview has a perfect life at this point, but at least the others went back to what they had before. Ralph didn't get that opportunity.

The comics had already told the story of Wanda's twins and Mephisto

In WandaVision, Wanda magically created her twin boys, Billy and Tommy, or William and Thomas. At the end of that series her children went away. Wanda created them with magic and seemingly used magic to get rid of them because they weren't entirely real. However, it does seem like they had souls.

This is where it gets interesting, because the story the MCU is telling with WandaVision and Agatha All Along isn't too different from the comics. There, Wanda also creates two children with magic. Agatha Harkness, who in the comics was not her enemy but a close family friend, realizes what has happened: the two children are pieces of Mephisto, the demon or devil of the underworld. Eventually he takes the twins back, and Agatha erases the twins from Wanda's memory. A fun fact: Doctor Strange was the one who delivered Wanda's children.

Here's the kicker. Mephisto reabsorbed the children as part of himself, but the twins fought back and overpowered him, thanks to their mother's love and influence. By defeating Mephisto, their souls became free, and they were eventually reincarnated. That is what happened with Billy in this episode, although Tommy isn't in it.

Billy broke the rules by being reincarnated into Billy Kaplan

The series has set out some rules of magic. At the end of the first episode, Rio, who I was very sure is Death, went to Agatha to try to kill her, but Agatha said she couldn't because it isn't allowed. At the end of this episode, Agatha said Billy broke the rules. I think these are Death's rules, which would make them Rio's rules. According to Agatha, Billy broke them by being reincarnated into a dead body.

We saw that happen here. We met Billy Kaplan, which is his name in the comics too, before he realizes he is the reincarnated son of Wanda Maximoff. He seems like a nice Jewish boy with very nice parents, and he's having a good time at his bar mitzvah. He runs into Lilia there, and we also see Alice, the cop who shows up when Billy gets in the car crash.

His bar mitzvah got interrupted by what was going on in Westview with the Scarlet Witch. Billy and his family live in Eastview, right by Westview, so the events there affect them. An emergency was called and they had to go home. As his mother drove, they all looked out the window at the magical barrier Wanda put over Westview and noticed it was shrinking. That was the moment in WandaVision when Wanda undid everything and, importantly, when her kids went away.

Looking at the barrier caused them to crash, and Billy Kaplan died. Since the soul of Billy Maximoff was being destroyed at that moment, it made its way into the empty body of Billy Kaplan, essentially reincarnating him. He has zero recollection of his past life with his mother. But when he woke up, he was saying Tommy, which was most likely the last thing he said before the twins disappeared. He was in the room with his brother, probably scared, and yelled out for him. Since then he has always sensed his brother is out there somewhere, so it seems Tommy has been reincarnated as well.

Billy Kaplan pieced together that he is Billy Maximoff

Billy can't remember anything, but he can sense he is somewhat magical, and he can read people's minds. He started studying the Westview event, and through leaked footage he discovered the runes Wanda used in her final fight against Agatha in WandaVision. That got him into witchcraft and made him want to learn more about what happened in Westview.

He came across Ralph Bohner himself on Reddit. He learned about Wanda Maximoff, specifically that she had twin boys, Billy and Tommy, and that they disappeared. He put it together: Billy Kaplan died, Wanda's twins essentially died as well, and he isn't Billy Kaplan but Billy Maximoff. He learned about the Witches' Road thanks to Lorna Wu, the famous singer of The Ballad of the Witches' Road and the mother of Alice.

As he figured things out, he wrote down Wanda Maximoff, Vision, Tommy Maximoff and Billy Maximoff. Wanda, he wrote, is dead. Vision is dismantled. Tommy is missing. Then, through good detective work, he found out about Agatha Harkness by reading Ralph's mind, and learned she was the only survivor of the Witches' Road. He went to his book about the road, which reads at the end that a witch may find what's missing. That told us he wants to find his brother, the one he listed as missing.

Agatha's find Mama line heavily implied the Scarlet Witch is alive

At the very end, Agatha asked Billy what he wants. It isn't power, because he already has it: "big magic is already in the bag for you." Then she asked if it was to find Mama, and answered herself: "No, she chose a town full of strangers over her own flesh and wires." The wires obviously refer to Vision.

That find Mama line heavily implies the Scarlet Witch is alive. Marvel had basically already confirmed this, and I think they essentially confirmed it here as well. If Wanda were dead, Agatha would say so, and Agatha can probably sense that she is alive. The only reason Billy wrote that she was dead is because Ralph said so. Nobody knows where she is, but she is still out there.

At the time, insiders said the Scarlet Witch would play a very important role in the Multiverse Saga, specifically in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, so her return looked pretty much imminent. There were also reports that Billy and Agatha would search for Tommy together, possibly in a special presentation or another Disney Plus show.

The setup pointed to Agatha mentoring Billy and a Maximoff reunion

The way everything was being set up pointed to Billy ultimately finding Tommy. Agatha would end up mentoring Billy and helping him control his powers, since this episode revealed he doesn't know how. Agatha had also been getting better as a person.

Agatha mentors Wanda in the comics, so it would be a cool play to have her mentor Wanda's son Billy instead. The progression I saw was this: Billy finds Tommy, Tommy and Billy find Vision, and then the three of them find the Scarlet Witch.

Lilia read Billy's broken lifeline before she cast the sigil

The start of the episode revealed that Lilia was the one who cast the sigil on Billy. We already knew she is a witch, so when she read Billy's palm, that was genuine witchcraft and fortune telling. She saw that his lifeline was broken in two. She was clearly terrified, but she played it off, telling him it meant important life changes, a new you, becoming a man.

She seemingly knew this kid was going to die and another life would go in his place, which is why the line is broken. She might have seen into the future and known it would be the spirit of Wanda's son, Billy Maximoff, and that could be why she made the sigil. If she did see the future, she might have seen herself with him, Agatha and the rest of them, and realized she needs to go down the Witches' Road for the reward at the end, whatever she wants. Since the sigil also works on the person who casts it, putting it on him could have been a way to protect herself.

The midseason trailer showed Lilia and Jen alive and Rio as Death

For anyone who thought Lilia and Jen were dead because Agatha said Billy killed them, Marvel had already shown they weren't in the midseason trailer released a few days earlier. We see them in many scenes. It looks like they go under the goo and end up in some space, and we see them in other trials, including one where they are dressed as Disney characters and Billy is Maleficent. The two of them were alive; that was confirmed.

The trailer also showed Alice lying on the floor with her eyes closed. She didn't look the way she did at the end of episode 5. Her skin had seemingly recovered, and apart from her closed eyes and being on the floor, she looked normal.

We also got a big confirmation about Rio. In the trailer, Aubrey Plaza says, "In the end, all roads lead to me." That is Death. In the end everybody dies, and no matter what road you are on, eventually you will die. The trailer also showed her in her full green witch outfit. Rio Vidal, the Green Witch, is Death, and all roads lead to her.

With the Scarlet Witch all but confirmed alive and Tommy out there somewhere, perhaps Agatha and Billy team up in their own special presentation or Disney Plus show to find them. Ultimately, it will lead to the union of the Maximoff family, which will probably be cut pretty short when they go into Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
