Agatha All Along Episode 5 Reveals the Teen Is Wiccan, but Which Wiccan Is He?

Agatha's trial of life and death, a mother who called her a demon, the fate of Alice Wu, and the questions the Wiccan reveal left open at the halfway point

It was Wiccan all along. The end of Agatha All Along Episode 5 confirmed that the Teen is Wiccan, so there's no reason not to talk spoilers at this point.

This was also Agatha's trial, and I want to break down both: what the episode did with Agatha, and what the reveal tells us, and doesn't tell us, about Wiccan. Later in this piece I also get into why I think Alice Wu is actually dead, and why I don't think the trial is over.

Agatha's trial of life and death forced her to face her own excuses

Agatha's trial is great because it's about life and death, with Agatha as the bearer of death. Honestly, it seems like death is all around us in this episode, and it's such a great way to challenge Agatha to look at her life and her choices.

What makes it so interesting is that Wiccan is looking her dead in the eye as she's killing Alice, as she's literally sucking the life out of Alice. And once again Agatha falls back on this idea that her powers are out of control and she knows not what she does.

I love that the show is now challenging Agatha on that. She's been around for centuries, and here she is demanding so much of all of these other witches, but for herself she gets to keep feigning "I can't, I can't, I can't." I love that her trial forced people to challenge her on it. She literally has her mother there, and there are some really sweet and really vulnerable moments where Agatha is asking her mother what she did.

Agatha's mother calling her a demon needed more explanation

I was curious, so I did some research. I wanted to know if there was a deeper backstory in the Marvel comics than in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I didn't find anything about Agatha's parents. There was a lot about her dying multiple times, but she basically just manifests in the comics, and the MCU doesn't give us anything more.

In the MCU her mother was there in the coven, and we learned that Agatha's mother, I guess, felt that she was born a demon. That didn't resonate with me. I needed more than that. Why was she born a demon? Did she automatically start taking powers away? I could see Agatha's mother wanting to soothe her as a baby using her powers, and Agatha already, at a young age, sucking those powers away. I could see her mother seeing that as something demonic.

So many witches know about the Darkhold and its powers, and we know it's taboo, so maybe she thought it was related to that. Maybe there's an MCU backstory we haven't gotten yet where her mother did use the Darkhold and Agatha got a little of that knowledge early on. I also wondered whether she had some time with Mephisto, or whether she was born part god of some sort, like a character from DC. I needed more understanding of why her mother hated her, and I do hope the MCU eventually gets to it.

Wiccan was destined to become a power that scares beings like Dormammu

This comes straight from the Marvel Comics website: Wiccan was destined to become the Demiurge, a godlike cosmic entity whose limitless powers both lure and strike fear into beings like Dormammu.

If you don't remember, Dormammu was that big smoky creature that Doctor Strange literally had to put in a loop. Doctor Strange himself couldn't defeat it. He had to trap Dormammu in a loop until it got so tired of him that it basically gave up and moved on. It's an extraordinary being, and the powers Wiccan was destined to have are enough to excite, taunt and scare it and so many others.

We might perhaps have seen some of that in this episode, but most certainly we saw him using his chaos magic, because we saw the Scarlet Witch crown upon his head. "Like mother, like son." I loved that.

The reveal leaves open which Wiccan this is and what he wants

There are a few questions I think we still need answered. What is Wiccan's purpose? I don't know where this falls in the timeline, and I don't know which Wiccan this is, because Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed there were multiple Wiccans out there.

Is this the Wiccan from the end of that film, belonging to the Wanda variant, where Billy and Tommy ignored our Wanda and went to their mother? Or is it our Wanda's Wiccan, the one who disappeared with Westview? I don't know. It is a Wiccan, we know that for sure, but how does he have his memories, what is he fighting for, and what does he want?

Is it Wanda he wants, or could it be his brother? We have no idea what happened to Speed, so maybe this is a quest to get his whole family back. As for Vision, I think at least White Vision is probably off with his pretend family and the kids, and that we'd see what's happening with him in a live action project. "He's off learning how to be a human part two." Either way, I want to know why Wiccan is on this road and why it was so desperate and deep that he had to seek out Wanda.

I think Alice Wu is actually dead, but the trial may not be over

I think Alice Wu is actually dead. Mrs. Hart and now Alice are dead, because the whole point is that you have to get to the end of the road with your coven. I wondered if there's a different way, and I think somewhere along the line it could be Wanda giving back some of that power, or Wiccan using his Scarlet Witch powers somehow, that brings them back.

These characters have to come back. Losing them would make me so mad, because Alice Wu has such a rich and fun history, and we didn't even get to see her use her magic. Looking back, I should have known she was going to die. She didn't get the broom, and I think that was probably foreshadowing that she was the one left out. The show keeps calling the Teen a familiar, so he's not treated as a true witch, though I don't know why they keep calling him that. But Alice was a witch, so she should have been gifted a broom.

I hate that it was her generosity and her kindness that ultimately undid her, but that was her role. She is the protection witch, so when Agatha needed protecting from the spirit of her mother, of course Alice would step in. Still, I don't think Agatha's trial is over. Heading into Episode 6, I thought we'd see it continue, with Wiccan or the other two having to challenge Agatha to bring them back. Her challenge was life and death, so I believed she'd have to give a piece of herself up for another witch.

I couldn't imagine they're actually gone, because it would be such a waste of a character. The backstory with her mother and the fact that she's a cop could be so useful. Other than Jessica Jones, I don't think we've really seen a PI style show, and I'd love to see Marvel's cop style characters come together and have their own show. I think that would be really fun.

Rio standing by Agatha, and what I hoped Episode 6 would bring

My last little note: go Rio, standing by your woman. Her attitude is basically that it's fine if she kills Agatha, but her mother isn't going to, because Agatha is hers. I love her sassy edge, but it's also real. If anyone's going to take Agatha, it's going to be Rio, and I love that.

I'm sure a lot of people got spoiled by Funko on the Wiccan reveal. Beyond that, we were still waiting for the final reveal of Rio, and I was very excited for the show to finally put a label on that character. At what felt like the halfway point, with everybody dying, I hoped Episode 6 would give Wiccan's backstory and what he'd been up to. We know it's Wiccan, but it would be nice to know who that Wiccan is.

Going in, I was excited for Young Avengers and the future of Marvel. At least for me, I love where the MCU is going, and I'm having a great time with it.

Which Wiccan do you think the Teen turned out to be?
