Who Is Mollymauk Tealeaf? The Mighty Nein's Blood Hunter Origin, Explained With Spoilers
From waking up buried with no memory to becoming the Mighty Nein's tattooed fortune teller, here is the full origin of Mollymauk Tealeaf, including the twist that explains why he cannot remember his own past.
Mollymauk Tealeaf's past is one of the biggest mysteries in the Mighty Nein, and it stays a mystery even to him. He is genuinely important to this entire campaign, but almost everything worth explaining about him is a spoiler, so consider this fair warning before going any further.
Each of the Mighty Nein characters now has three tellings of their story: the original tabletop campaign, the animated series, and an original comic. This breakdown leans on the origin comic, with some campaign detail mixed in, so do not be surprised if a few beats differ from the animated show. That is kind of the point of retelling a character three times, it would not be nearly as fun if nothing ever changed between versions.
Mollymauk's Powers Come From Blood Hunter Magic, and He Does Not Remember Learning It
Molly is a tiefling blood hunter, a class built around rare magic that uses blood to cause harm, heal, or manipulate the life force of others. Becoming a blood hunter requires completing the Hunter's Bane, a ritual that alters the practitioner's lifeblood and grants control over hemocraft magic through mastery of blood and life energy. Blood hunters can invoke blood curses that impair enemies in various ways, such as blinding them or knocking them unconscious, and they can amplify a curse by drawing their own blood to make it stronger.
Blood hunters can also empower their weapons, usually with elemental energy like fire, ice, or lightning, and in Molly's case that energy takes the form of ice. Despite all of this being fundamental to who he is, Molly does not actually remember any of it, something that comes through clearly in both the show and the campaign.
He Woke Up Buried in the Ground With No Memory and Found a Family in a Traveling Carnival
Molly woke up buried in the ground with no memories at all, and he regards that moment of waking as the moment he came into existence. He joined a traveling carnival, claiming he had been with them for as long as he could remember. The first person he met was Toya, though at that point he had almost nothing to say beyond a single word, spelled out as E M P T Y, which becomes important later.
Toya brought him into the carnival, and slowly he started to fit in. The performers became his new family, and the fortune teller Lestera took him under her wing, encouraging him to join in the carnival's celebrations and inspiring him to commemorate special events with tattoos, which is why he has so many by the time he meets the Mighty Nein. In the animated show and the campaign, those tattoos do not seem to carry much rhyme, reason, or meaning behind them, but in the comic origin they start out as genuine markers of memory.
As time passed, Molly, though not yet named Molly, began to regain his speech, and his new friends taught him how to read cards.
How He Got the Name Mollymauk Tealeaf
Molly got his name while traveling with the carnival, when officials in one town tried to check the papers of everyone working there. Molly panicked because he had no papers and no idea where he had come from, but ringmaster Gustav had already had papers forged for him. The name on those papers came from that word Molly had spoken when he first met Toya: Gustav had heard the sound as "MT" and assumed it stood for initials, so he built a name around it, giving Molly the name Mollymauk Tealeaf. In one act, Molly had found a family, a home, and a name.
His Robin Hood Streak and the Discovery of His Hemocraft
Molly stayed with the carnival but occasionally slipped away for small adventures on his own, using choir practice as his cover story while acting as a kind of Robin Hood figure. That instinct is baked into the advice he later gives the Mighty Nein, to "leave a place better than you found it" and to "never steal from happy people."
As he grew closer to Lestera, spending time drinking together and simply enjoying each other's company, he came to trust her judgment completely. So when he discovered he had hemocraft during a fight tied to his Robin Hood escapades, she was the first person he told. Her advice was simple: just tell Gustav about it. Gustav ended up folding the revelation into the show itself by giving Molly two dual swords, which appear in both the campaign and the animated series, though the campaign later invents grandiose stories about their origin while the comic and animated show simply have the circus provide them. This is also when Molly takes on the stage name the Ice Spinner.
Losing Lestera and Meeting Yasha
Lestera died not long after, and at her funeral, per her wish, Gustav gave Molly her cloak and her deck of oracle cards. Molly took over as the carnival's fortune teller, continuing the role Lestera had been teaching him to fill.
During their travels, Molly came across an angry crowd yelling at a woman standing outside a church, a woman the Mighty Nein would come to know as Yasha. He convinced the crowd that despite her frightening appearance, she was a redeemed and poised demon just like himself, and the townsfolk backed off. He brought her back to the carnival, reasoning that "why not wander in good company," and that single act is how the two of them became friends, a friendship that has been sorely missing from the animated show so far.
Scamming a Scammer: The Law Master Story
The last adventure told in the origin comic follows Molly hearing about a law master in a nearby town who was scamming his people by claiming false connections to the royal family of a foreign empire, when in reality he was simply pocketing their money. Wanting to scam the scammer, Molly and the carnival's tiefling traveled there with Molly posing as the Duke of Ashtana, a member of a royal family that does not actually exist. He convinced the law master that he and his friends were there to support him in exchange for half of that month's profits.
Molly and the carnival stayed for three weeks entertaining the townspeople, and at the end of it he betrayed the law master by revealing to the town that he had been stealing all of their money. The scammer was banished rather than killed, since Molly made a point that banishment would be the worse punishment. The people recovered part of the money that had been swindled from them, and the carnival left with some profit of its own.
Major Spoiler: Before Molly Was Molly, His Body Belonged to Lucien
This is a major spoiler for the entire campaign and for Molly's past, so this is the point to stop reading if that is not wanted. Before Molly existed, his body was inhabited by Lucien, who grew up in Shady Creek Run and formed the Tomb Takers, a small group of mercenary blood hunters. Lucien acquired a tome that let him gain power and knowledge from an ancient group of mages ruling a living city in the astral sea, and drawn in by the promise of that power, he attempted to complete the ritual it demanded.
He was double crossed by the mage he had hired to perform it, and his soul was broken and scattered. Believing him dead, his allies buried his body not far from their hideout and went their separate ways. He was not fully dead, though, because a small part of his soul, the part that eventually became Molly, still resided inside that buried body.
Molly's Death and the Rise of Kingsley Tealeaf
Another major spoiler follows. Molly is the first player death within the campaign, but he does not stay dead. As Lucien became Molly, Molly then becomes something else again, and one branch of that outcome is Lucien's return as the campaign's big bad. When the party cannot actually reach Molly's soul, a new person emerges instead, one the Mighty Nein come to call Kingsley Tealeaf, who becomes their friend from that point on. Kingsley starts out functioning almost like a non-player character while the party works out who he even is, before eventually being taken over fully as a played character.
There is a lot more within the campaign that could be unpacked about Molly's role, but he is the kind of character best experienced organically rather than summarized further, because the story built around him is genuinely that good. For now, that covers the origin of Mollymauk Tealeaf, and the differences between the comic, the campaign, and the animated show are worth exploring on their own another time.
