Zack Snyder's Justice League wins Sam over, and he calls the second half phenomenal
After finishing part two, Sam called the second half phenomenal, while I revisited why the Snyder Cut was worth making
We finished part two of Zack Snyder's Justice League, and Sam loved the whole thing. He said it was long, but he loved how they did it, which is why we split it into two parts.
Sam says the second half of Zack Snyder's Justice League was phenomenal
When I asked whether he liked the Wonder Woman, Sam said, "Yes, a lot. I liked it a lot. A lot a lot." He was careful not to knock the opening half: "The first part was great setup. It was great setup, but the second from where we started to the end was phenomenal." He thinks it may be because he loves all the characters. For my part, the moment they brought Superman back, I knew he was going to love it.
He also got caught out by the length. "I thought it was over before. I was happy with that ending," Sam said, and he'd have been happy if it had wrapped where Superman was. As I told him, he got four different endings after that.
Why I came around on the Snyder Cut
Snyder had something happen in his family, and the movie basically got taken away from him. They made a version that wasn't great, and eventually he was allowed to make his own, which was released on HBO Max. When I saw it there, I really enjoyed it.
Back in the day, people kept asking whether they'd do this cut, and it got so repetitive that my attitude was: let's move on. But once you get the real backstory of what he went through, I started saying, including on a show we did, that he should be able to put it together if the footage exists. The released version had problems: Henry Cavill was shooting Mission Impossible and had a mustache, so they CGIed it out, and there were really corny jokes. It's not good. Sam was glad he skipped it.
The storylines Snyder set up never continued
This is separate from the new DCU with the Lanterns and Superman; the Lantern show isn't connected. The Martian Manhunter at the end isn't the same, and who knows whether he shows up in the new DCU. Aquaman, Flash, a second Wonder Woman, a second Aquaman, Shazam and Suicide Squad came afterward, but the continued story Snyder set up was dropped.
I think that's why Snyder added those endings in his cut. When it was released, I think they already knew this universe wasn't continuing, so he wanted to show people the storylines he was setting up, like that flashback, or dream.
I don't know if we'll go on with those other films. There are a couple I think Sam would still like, but we have other things to get to. Maybe we'll go back eventually.
