Lanterns finale divides us over Hal Jordan's fate and what comes next

A finale that sets up John Stewart, a lingering question about Jason Ritter's character, and a split verdict on the last episode

We finally got through the Lanterns finale, about a week late because Sam was sick, and we didn't land in the same place. I love this episode. Sam liked the series but didn't love how it ended, and most of that comes down to what happened to Hal Jordan.

We both went in blind. Avoiding spoilers meant getting off IG and scrolling past any picture of Aaron Pierre.

Noah turns out to be a Manhunter

Going in, there had been a feeling since the previous episode that there had to be more to the story. When it was revealed that Noah is a Manhunter too, it turned out to be a correct call. Our read on him is that he isn't bad. He's teeter-tottering between his nature and the way he was raised. When he asks John Stewart to kill him, that's a tough position to put him in.

Hal's fate is the real split

Sam didn't love what happened to Hal. My question afterward was whether Hal is gone for good. Aaron Pierre is going to be in the Superman sequel, and there's been no mention of Kyle Chandler, who plays Hal, being in it. If there's a season two, I don't think it works without Hal. Sinestro did say he could bring him back, so there's always a little bit of you never know.

Even so, I thought it was good. To me, this whole season was set up to make John Stewart the guy in Man of Tomorrow, because you can't follow Guy Gardner around for that long. Maybe love blinded Hal. I don't know.

The tone worked for me

Overall, "the true detective side of things, I thought was solid." I would have liked to see a little more ring action in the last episode, but the problem is that if you charge the ring, Hal's over. I like the tone of what they did with this season.

Where we did agree is the ending for Noah's mother. Once she confessed to killing Hal and he let her go, we both felt she should have gone to jail. We were also left wondering what Noah is going through, since he asked not to see it coming and John clearly said no.

The Jason Ritter question

One question came up between us. Noah's mother says she hadn't been with anyone, so Jason Ritter's character obviously knows the child wasn't his. Where does he fit in all this? Is that a setup for season two or just a plot hole? We split on it: "I liked the series. I didn't love this episode," versus "I love this episode. I disagree on this one with you." I think they're setting something up for next season, that Hal is going to come back in some way, shape, or form, and that there's still something up with Ritter.

I want to see Man of Tomorrow, which comes out next year and should answer some questions. We weren't sure whether anything has been announced about another season yet.

Did the Lanterns finale work for you, or did Hal's fate leave you wanting more?
