KOTOR Remake Rumour Points to Late 2027 or Early 2028, but Saber's Own Word Is 'Hopefully'

An unverified release window, a Saber executive's cautious mention of 2028, court testimony about a KOTOR 2 remake, and what the next reveal needs to show

The Knights of the Old Republic remake might finally have a release window, with a new rumour pointing to late 2027 or early 2028. The detail that actually got my attention, though, came from somebody at Saber itself, and it arrived with one word attached that changes how you should hear all of the release talk.

Court testimony has also revealed plans to remake KOTOR 2. I want to get excited about this. Revan, modern visuals, one of the best Star Wars adventures ever made getting another shot. But beyond the date there is a bigger question: what kind of game are we actually waiting for?

The late 2027 KOTOR remake rumour comes from an unverified account

The new rumour comes via an article pointing to an account that has been posting a lot of Star Wars claims. That account says the KOTOR remake is still being made and could arrive in late 2027 or early 2028. The same account is also claiming that we are about to start seeing Jedi 3 marketed and revealed, saying it is coming next year and could see potential marketing at the Game Awards.

That sounds great, and Star Wars fans would have a very nice problem deciding what to play first. But I could not establish a reliable track record for this account or independently corroborate the specific claims at all. I am treating it as a rumour being circulated, not somebody handing us the release schedule.

It is also worth separating the claims. The marketing claim ahead of the Game Awards is about Jedi 3. That does not mean we suddenly got confirmation that Revan is walking onto that stage this December. These stories are getting mashed together fast, and before long every thumbnail will be announcing three Star Wars games and a movie all coming at the same time.

Saber's chief business officer said 2028, and 'hopefully' the KOTOR remake

The stronger evidence goes back to July, when PC Gamer reported on a post from Steve Allison, Saber Interactive's chief business officer. He was discussing the company's plans to do more self publishing and mentioned its lineup for 2028. Among the projects he brought up was, hopefully, the KOTOR remake.

PC Gamer contacted Saber, and a representative confirmed the message was his. They also made it clear that this was not an official release date announcement. So there is the word: hopefully. I know nobody wants that word after waiting this long, but it matters. A senior executive mentioning the game in connection with a future lineup gives us something more substantial than an anonymous date, while still leaving room for plans to move.

My read is that 2028 has a stronger public basis than late 2027. That is an assessment of the evidence we have, not me predicting the launch of this game. Nobody should be booking time off based on it.

Tim Willits confirmed the remake is in development, and little else

We also have a direct update from Tim Willits, Saber's chief creative officer. In March, he told IGN the remake was in development, and then he declined to share more. Thanks a lot, Tim.

That establishes that Saber was continuing the project at that point. It does not tell us how far along it is, whether the combat has been finalised, or when we could actually see gameplay or a trailer. As I see it, "The game being alive and a game being close to release, those are two different levels of excitement."

The move away from Aspyr means five years of announcement does not equal five years of progress

That is why the history matters. The remake was announced in September 2021 with Aspyr leading development. The original PlayStation announcement described rebuilding the game with modern tech while preserving its story and characters. Then came the reported development troubles and the move away from Aspyr.

So when somebody says this has been announced for five years and therefore must be almost finished, I do not think we can jump there. A change in development leadership could mean substantial rework, and we do not have a public accounting of what survived or how much was rebuilt.

We do have a more specific answer on who is handling it. Game File's reporting on court documents, subsequently covered by PC Gamer, identified a Saber owned studio through testimony from a Lucasfilm Games executive. That is more useful than simply saying Saber has it. It still does not give us a tour of the current development team, but it helps explain why the old Aspyr announcement cannot answer every question about the game today.

Court documents revealed a KOTOR 2 remake called Juliet

Those same documents brought out the KOTOR 2 plans. A project called Juliet referred to a full remake of the sequel. The Lucasfilm Games executive described preserving its story and characters while updating the presentation and the gameplay. In testimony from March 2025, he said it remained on the road map, but the first KOTOR remake would come first.

That is evidence of actual planning. It is not confirmation that KOTOR 2 is currently in full production or has a release date. I would love to tell you a two game collection is around the corner, but we are not there yet.

The possibility still matters. KOTOR 2 is exactly the sort of game where revisiting the original could offer far more than sharper textures; there is an opportunity to give its ideas and characters a complete presentation. Whether it happens at all is another question. For now, my takeaway is that Lucasfilm's interest in revisiting this era extended beyond one remake, at least in the plans described in what we know. And if the first remake comes out and it is a success, KOTOR 2 is on the way.

The KOTOR remake reveal needs to show the role playing, not just lightsabers

This is the part I am most interested in: the actual RPG. What made KOTOR special was not just swinging a lightsaber. It was building a character, travelling with companions, having conversations and making choices that shaped your adventure. You could spend time thinking about who you wanted to be in the Star Wars galaxy. Sometimes that meant being a hero, and sometimes it meant choosing the dialogue option you would never admit to choosing in front of your parents.

Modernising that is a huge opportunity, but I want the next reveal to show the role playing and how it works. Show me a conversation. Show me the party. Show me a decision with consequences. A beautiful corridor and a cinematic lightsaber fight could sell almost any Star Wars game. KOTOR needs to show why it is KOTOR, and whether it still has the special sauce.

I am not going to present a specific combat system as confirmed when the evidence I found does not establish one. Whether they retain more of the original structure or move toward action is a debate that has come up many, many times. My concern is keeping room for strategy, character builds and companions that actually matter.

Fate of the Old Republic is a separate game, not the remake or KOTOR 3

There is another Old Republic project that gets confused with this one. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was officially announced at the 2025 Game Awards. It is a separate single player action RPG led by Casey Hudson, the director of the original KOTOR, and that is huge.

Lucasfilm explicitly says it is not a direct sequel or continuation. So that announcement was not the remake changing its name, and it was not KOTOR 3 being confirmed. It is a different game drawing on that legacy.

Put it together and we could potentially be getting four huge Star Wars games in the next couple of years: Jedi 3, the KOTOR remake, the KOTOR 2 remake and Fate of the Old Republic. That makes the next few years interesting without needing to pretend every rumour is true right now. And I think Jedi 3 is going to be bigger than all of them.

Where the KOTOR remake stands now

The late 2027 claim is unverified, but the 2028 discussion has a genuine connection to Saber leadership. The court reporting gives us a clearer picture of the developer and the broader plan. So I am hopeful, optimistically hopeful. I just need the next update to show progress instead of asking us to imagine it.

As I see it, "Revan getting a prettier mask, that's the easiest part." Making it feel like KOTOR again while modernising it for 2026 and 2027 is the hard part.

What matters most to you: keeping the original combat structure, modernising it into something more active, or protecting the choices and companions above everything else?
