Buddy Ending Explained: The Band-Aid, Buddy's Brothers and a Possible Sequel
How two Band-Aids reconnect Grace and Freddy, what the unicorn mural reveals about Benny and Bobby, and why Buddy's powers reach into the real world
Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen Buddy yet. The ending of Buddy is crazy and unlike any horror movie I've ever watched before. There's so much going on in this movie that I can't cover everything here, but we have to talk about how it ends, what it reveals about Buddy's brothers, and just how powerful this demon is. There's also one detail involving a Band-Aid that I think nobody is talking about.
Two Band-Aids prove Freddy is Grace's daughter
Buddy takes out multiple kids throughout this movie in a bunch of different ways, but when it comes down to the ending, Freddy and Grace are the only people who can help defeat him. The key to their bond is set up early on. Grace, played by Cristin Milioti, is in the real world when her son gets hurt in the driveway, and she puts a Band-Aid on his arm. She actually puts two Band-Aids on, so that one can support the other.
Throughout the movie, Grace has been having memory distortions, thinking that she has another child. It's not until towards the end, when Freddy goes into the office and Grace puts two Band-Aids onto her, that it all comes together. Freddy knows Grace did this so that they can both support each other, and that's the moment we 100% know that Freddy was really her daughter.
It's not really explained much, but Buddy has somehow manipulated the minds of adults in order to make them forget that they even had a child. He also somehow wipes all the memories of the kids once they get into his show.
Grace's sacrifice lets Freddy kill Buddy and escape through the TV
After Buddy takes on his true form, Mr. Mailbox points to the Worry Well, and this is the way out. Grace sacrifices herself so the kids and her daughter can escape down the well. Down there, they run into one of Buddy's terrified brothers in the workshop, and two of the other kids get taken and eaten by Buddy as well.
Freddy, with the help of her backpack Strappy, is able to kill Buddy using Mr. Mailbox. For the first time, Buddy breaks character, calling her the B-word. It's not until she discovers the gym and sees a way out through the television that she's able to go back to reality, where she ends up in someone's random living room.
The movie ends there, and there are so many unanswered questions in Buddy that I'll be covering. But it's just a phenomenal movie, and in my opinion, it's one of my favorite movies of the entire year. It was so unhinged and just something original that I was looking forward to.
Benny and Bobby: Buddy's brothers could open up a sequel
The movie reveals that Buddy has brothers, and this could open up a huge sequel and other movies. When the kids escape down the Worry Well, they're let into the workshop by one of Buddy's brothers, who is absolutely terrified. At first, we don't really know who this unicorn is, but we see a bunch of different props, and it's basically implied that he is forced to work for Buddy.
It's not until a few minutes later, when Freddy is walking through the school, that we see three different unicorns on a mural on the wall: Buddy the orange unicorn, Benny the yellow unicorn and Bobby the blue unicorn. That means the yellow unicorn who was absolutely terrified was Benny, and it opens up some huge unanswered questions about why Buddy would do this to his brother.
I assume the show somehow started with the three unicorns and Buddy did not like this, so he overthrew his brothers. We don't know for sure what happened to Bobby, and maybe it opens up another movie for him.
Buddy's powers reach parents in the real world
Buddy is one of the most powerful demons we've ever seen in a movie. He's insane and has so many different abilities that he's completely unpredictable.
First off, something that is terrifying is that Buddy has the ability to wipe the minds of adults in the real world. On top of luring kids into the television, trapping them and suppressing their memories, Buddy can also somehow suppress the memories of their parents so that they don't remember they even had a child. This is such a terrifying detail because it shows that nobody is safe from Buddy, and it shows that Buddy is a true demon. He's not just locked to the confines of the television and the world inside it. He can basically mind control people, and this makes him unstoppable.
We also see on that mural towards the end that Buddy has two brothers named Bobby and Benny, and Benny is the yellow unicorn in the workshop who is basically held captive by him. On top of this, we get to see Buddy's true form, and he's basically an unstoppable creature.
The Band-Aid shows human connection breaks Buddy's memory spell
The Band-Aid reveals something that nobody is talking about. Earlier on, Grace puts two Band-Aids on one of her kids after he gets hurt in the driveway, because one supports the other. Once she is sucked into the Buddy TV show as the nurse, she does this once again, which reconnects her to her long lost daughter who she had no memory of.
The Band-Aid is one of the greatest movie details in this film, but what no one is talking about is that this is the only way they broke the memory spell in Buddy's world. This proves that the only thing that could break the memory distortion in Buddy's world is human connection from the outside world.
I know a lot of people have been talking about how this movie is a great example of how media drives fear, and how people are kind of locked into their screens. In the end, however, it's human connection in the real world that can solve all issues. Although it's not proven, I just think this is what they were going for 100%, because all it shows is that in the end, we have each other.
Which reveal from the ending of Buddy stood out most to you: the Band-Aid or Buddy's brothers?
