Every Girl Miles Morales Has Dated in Marvel Comics, From Kate Bishop to Gwen Stacy
A look back through the comics at every romance and crush Miles Morales has had, long before his relationship with Gwen Stacy played out on screen
After seeing Miles and Gwen's relationship explored further across the Spider-Verse films, I went back through my favorite Miles Morales comics. It turns out Miles has dated several other Marvel heroes besides Gwen, and at the time this piece was put together he even had a completely different girlfriend in the then-current Miles Morales Spider-Man Vol 2 run. Here is a history of everyone Miles Morales has dated in the comics.
An Early Crush on Cassie Lang
Miles's romantic history kicks off with a crush on Cassie Lang. When Miles battled the mind controlled Giant Woman in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man number 18, he admitted he was embarrassed about finding a girl of her stature still attractive. It's okay buddy, plenty of guys like giantesses, there is no shame in that game.
Obviously this is just a fleeting, momentary crush.
Kate Bishop Becomes His First Real Girlfriend
Miles's first real relationship is with another young Avenger variant, Kate Bishop. Miles must have a thing for Hailee Steinfeld types. Instead she is the daughter of Hydra agents, unbeknownst to Miles, and a fellow student at the Brooklyn Visions Academy. Kate is first seen crushing on Miles from afar in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man issues 12 and 19.
We miss the details of how their relationship actually starts because of a one year time skip that follows Venom killing Miles's mother Rio. Sometime during that gap, Miles and Kate start going steady. Miles considers telling Kate about his secret Spider-Man identity but initially decides against it, wanting to keep her and her loved ones safe from super villain harm.
That desire to be honest with her grows stronger after his father rejects him. When Miles reveals his identity to his father Jefferson, he is blamed for his mother's death, which makes him even more afraid to tell Kate his secret. At the end of the next issue, though, Miles decides to tell his girlfriend that he is in fact Spider-Man.
Terrified, Kate runs away from him and ends up confiding in her sister, who tells their father Derek Bishop. Bishop uses this information to drug and kidnap Miles, and when Kate tries to defend her father and Hydra, Miles ends the relationship.
Casual Crushes: Jean Grey and Diamondback
After getting burned by dating Kate, Miles goes through an era of casual crushes. One of these is Marvel Girl, Earth 616's teenage Jean Grey, in All-New X-Men numbers 31 through 36. Jean and her fellow X-Men end up displaced into the 1610 universe, so Miles helps Jean meet with her Ultimate variant to defeat Doctor Doom and return home. Both Jean Grey can psychically sense that Miles is crushing hard on Marvel Girl, and before she leaves his corner of the multiverse, teen Jean kisses Miles on the cheek in All-New Ultimates number 2.
Miles also gets a kiss from the criminal leader of the Serpent Skulls, Diamondback, also known as Rachel Leighton, in the All-New All-Different Avengers Annual. There is no dating here, since Diamondback is described as a murderous criminal, but she did confirm a crush on Spidey by kissing him mid battle.
The Ms Marvel Fanfic Confession
In the All-New All-Different Avengers Annual, Miles's Champions teammate Ms Marvel starts beefing with a fanfic writer named badmachine199, who apparently keeps publishing stories about a love triangle between Champions members Spider-Man, Nova and Ms Marvel. By the end of the issue it turns out the bad machine is none other than Miles Morales, who confesses that he dreams about Ms Marvel flirting with him.
Miles is not the only one who thinks this pair has chemistry. That same issue also features another writer's fanfic about Ms Marvel and Spider-Man going on a date. Despite being a commonly shipped pair, this is the closest we get to actual romance between the two characters in the comics covered here.
Gwen Stacy of Earth 65
Next is the girl most people are waiting for, Gwen Stacy of Earth 65. Their relationship blossoms in a Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen crossover titled Sitting In A Tree, which ran for six total issues across the two series. These two end up bonding for some of the same reasons they do in Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, since they have a lot in common as Spider folk with secret identities and an unmistakable attraction.
Maria Hill sends Miles to Earth 65 in search of his father, who, in an attempt to protect Miles, accepted a mission to intercept technology that allows a person to travel between realities, not unlike the wristbands from Across the Spider-Verse. When he first arrives, Miles meets Gwen fighting the Ringer and learns that Gwen gets her Spider Woman powers from radioactive isotopes nicknamed power ups, sold to her by the evil alternate version of Matt Murdock. Like in Across the Spider-Verse, this Gwen's best friend Peter Parker died the night of their senior prom after turning himself into a lizard to try to impress her. Miles gets a little embarrassed when his crutches collide with Gwen's.
Ms Marvel meets Gwen for the first time in Spider-Gwen number 17, and Kamala gives Gwen the classic "don't you dare hurt the sweet baby boy's heart" speech. When Miles and Gwen go dimension hopping with a multiversal watch, they end up discovering an alternate reality where they have been married for 20 years. Miles makes it back to Earth 65, but Gwen lands on Earth 8, where she has to earn Miles's future children Charlotte and Max.
After Miles finds his dad and Gwen returns home, they share a kiss, but Gwen ultimately tells him she is not in the right headspace for a boyfriend right now, and they decide to remain friends.
A Love Triangle with Lana Baumgartner and Barbara Rodriguez
Around this same time, Miles gets into an awkward position with his old New Ultimates teammate Lana Baumgartner, also known as Bombshell. Lana used to run with Miles in his early superheroing years, and in Spider-Man Vol 2 numbers 17 and 18 she is hospitalized after a fight with Hammerhead. Spider-Man and his friend and classmate Goldballs bring Hammerhead to justice, despite the fact that Goldballs was the one who actually defeated him. Lana develops a crush on Miles after seeing him fight Hammerhead on the news, and the fact that his name is Goldballs probably had something to do with it too.
During the same period we meet Barbara Rodriguez in Spider-Man 2 number 1. Miles is immediately smitten from the moment he sees her and asks his friend Ganke what the new girl's deal is. Ganke can't believe Miles hasn't noticed her before, since they did a school project together and once all went to the movies. He clues Miles in, telling him that Barbara is super nice, cute, and has a voice like Alicia Keys, then plays matchmaker by getting Barbara and Miles talking about school. She even teases Miles about his frequent habit of sneaking out of the dorms.
In the midst of their conversation, a giant robot head falls from the sky, and it is revealed in issue number 4 that Miles saved her from being crushed. She thanks him and half seriously asks if he's a mutant or an Inhuman, telling him she can sense he's hiding something and that he can trust her. Miles thanks her for offering but tells her he needs to think about it, and does offer to take her to the movies instead, with Ganke recommending Close Encounters as the perfect film choice.
When Goldballs finds out Miles is dating Barbara, he starts telling him off in Lana's honor, which leads Goldballs to realize he might be crushing on Lana himself. This causes some friction with Barbara, who overhears Miles talking to Ganke about Lana and worries he might be cheating. Their relationship gets back on stable ground for a while and the pair spend a significant amount of time dating, watching her little cousin together and with Miles supporting her blossoming music career. She's sort of the MJ to his Pete.
Ultimately Barbara ends up dumping Miles because he can't be honest with her about his secret, never telling her about his life as Spider-Man despite the fact that she's clearly pieced it together herself. Even though the breakup is a bit awkward for their friend group, Barbara still supports Miles by protecting his identity a handful of times afterward. She then explores her feelings for Ganke, who has always been keyed into what makes her special, but this pairing doesn't last nearly as long and the two decide they should focus on schoolwork instead.
Starling, aka Tiana Toomes, His Most Serious Girlfriend
Fresh off his breakup with Barbara, Miles meets Tiana Toomes, also known as Starling, the granddaughter of the Vulture. The two first meet in Miles Morales Spider-Man Vol 1 issue number 5 when they run into each other hunting down Tombstone. Although Spider-Man is eager to work with her, he also feels Starling's fighting style is a little too rough, since she tried to drop Tombstone from the sky instead of bringing him to justice. It's a little too murderous for Miles, but she was trained by Adrian Toomes, so it isn't surprising she isn't the type to go easy on opponents.
Despite that violent streak, she's basically Miles's dream girl. He reveals his identity to Tiana in issue number 22 after defeating Frost Pharaoh, and they finally kiss. In issue 24, Miles catches up with his friend Kamala Khan, and the two talk about their failed relationships over ice cream, deciding that friendship is too important to ruin with romance. Tiana and Miles meet on a rooftop to make out in issue number 30, and issue 42 shows the two of them actually dating in addition to fighting crime together. Starling tells Spidey she doesn't have a ton of rules when it comes to relationships, but if he wants to be with her, he needs to open up about his feelings.
When Miles Morales Spider-Man Vol 2 began, the first couple of issues showed Miles pulling away from Tiana. When she confronts him about ghosting her, he gives the classic superhero excuse, telling her he's afraid everyone he loves will eventually get hurt and that his double life is weighing on him. Tiana basically tells him that's what literally every hero says and it's not an excuse to be unkind, so Miles promises to catch up with her later to talk things out.
Instead, Miles is attacked by Scorpion and a mysterious robot kidnaps Tiana. The woman operating the robot is tech genius Rene Rashad, aka the Rabble, whose entire motivation is resentment toward Miles Morales. It turns out she was up for the same lottery spot at Brooklyn Visions Academy, but Miles's number 42 was called instead of hers. After she and Miles fight, both are wounded, and the Rabble manages to capture Ganke and threaten Miles's entire family. Miles nearly dies trying to save his family, girlfriend and best friend from his jealous Nemesis, but Rasheed manages to retreat to her headquarters, where she and Scorpion plan their next attack.
Tiana pops up again in Spider-Verse Unlimited Infinity Comics volume 1 issue number 48, where we see the two of them kiss at the top of the Brooklyn Bridge before Miles is brain paged by Madame Web. The last time we see her in the comics covered here is still in volume 2 of Miles Morales Spider-Man, where it's confirmed in issue number 6 that things are finally back to normal between Starling and Spider-Man. Tiana was Miles's most recent girlfriend in the comics and arguably one of his more serious ones, though with Miles Morales Spider-Man Vol 2 only six issues deep at the time, how the rest of that run would play out was still to be seen.
These are all of Miles Morales's love interests from the comics covered here. If the MCU ever did decide to make a live action version of Miles Morales, I could definitely see them fleshing out his relationship with Kamala Khan, or even introducing him to a giant sized Cassie Lang. Which of these do you think might show up on screen next?
