Avengers: Doomsday coffee menu: is Doctor Doom tied to Mephisto?

Hear me out: I think Marvel Studios is telling us that Doctor Doom has Mephisto in his backstory. That may not come up in Avengers: Doomsday. Maybe it surfaces in Avengers: Secret Wars, which was set to follow a year after Doomsday when I wrote this. Either way, I see it as a factual canon event, true in the history of this Doctor Doom and any other Doctor Doom we meet, and Marvel Studios just showed it's very interested in exploring it.

At the time of writing, Doomsday hadn't been released. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doom, and the clues came from a promotional event for the film.

The Avengers: Doomsday coffee menu was full of Doctor Doom references

That event became known to some as coffee gate, because no Avengers: Doomsday trailer was released there. What it did have was a drink menu, renamed by the marketing team with specific references to Doctor Doom's history in the comics.

Vladimir Fortunov was the cruel Latverian ruler before Victor von Doom overthrew him. Another drink referred to an annual Latverian festival where Latverians traditionally seek to make peace with their enemies, celebrated on the day Cynthia von Doom died. Cynthia was Victor's mother. A third drink referred to the Romani clan that Doom's parents, Cynthia and his father Werner, belonged to. Hassenstadt was the original name of Doomstadt, the capital of Latveria.

These references tell me the people marketing this movie, people with insight into its plot, had to research the backstory of Downey's Doctor Doom. And it's important to know that this guy is a mama's boy.

Why Cynthia von Doom always leads back to Mephisto

Cynthia has a long history with Mephisto. Trust me, it's not a throwaway reference in one comic. It comes up almost every time we hear about Cynthia across the decades. Mephisto is 10 times more important to Cynthia von Doom than he is to someone like Wanda Maximoff.

Mephisto trapping Cynthia's soul is what motivated Victor's pursuit of science and magic. Doom's origin was first explored in Fantastic Four Annual #2 in 1964. There, Werner was a healer brought in to heal the wife of King Vladimir Fortunov. When he failed, Fortunov sent his men after Werner and Victor. After a pursuit into the woods left Werner with hypothermia, he left young Victor in the care of another man in the clan, Boris. Victor then dug up his mother's old chest of mystical potions and books and used them to become a master of science and sorcery.

In 1971's Astonishing Tales #8, a three story issue in which Doom isn't even on the cover despite having the most interesting story, we learn his mother practiced witchcraft and was trapped by a demon in hell. The devil isn't named Mephisto there, but he's later formally established to be Mephisto. This is where Cynthia's hell demon backstory begins. Every midsummer eve, when the border between Earth and hell is thinnest, Doom battles the devil and his minions to free his mother's soul. He fails in that issue, but the idea of Mephisto torturing her keeps coming back.

Doctor Doom, Franklin Richards and Mephisto

In 1986's Fantastic Four Annual #20, Doom plots to use a four year old Franklin Richards, who had defeated Mephisto in a previous issue, to get Cynthia's soul back. Doom summons Mephisto and offers Franklin in exchange. Franklin is taken to hell, defeats Mephisto again, and we see Cynthia as a "frail female form on the horizon."

That storyline puts what Doom does with a Franklin of around the same age, in the scene after the credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), in a whole new perspective. Maybe it's connected, but around the time I wrote this, word came out of a new actor being cast in Doomsday. Maybe he's the one playing young Franklin.

Triumph and Torment and Books of Doom define Cynthia's story

1989's Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment is considered the definitive Cynthia von Doom story. Doom wins a favor from Doctor Strange and asks for help rescuing his mother's soul from Mephisto's demons. Doom then bargains with Mephisto to trade Strange's soul for Cynthia's freedom. When Cynthia learns the price, she rejects Victor as a traitor.

But it's a clever ploy. Victor had given Strange a device to free himself, and in the battle that followed, Mephisto was forced to release Cynthia, because by rejecting her son's rescue she had redeemed her soul and proven her goodness. Her soul moved on to a better afterlife.

The family's Romani clan, called by an outdated term in the 1964 annual, was officially named the Zefiro in 1992's Doom 2099 #1, though Cynthia doesn't appear there. Instead, 2005's Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker and Pablo Raimondi explains how she met Mephisto and died. Her witchcraft and dealings with Mephisto gave her the power to take vengeance on a baron's men who had tortured her and her clan. In killing those men in a village, she accidentally killed all the children there too, because Mephisto loves kids dying.

Cynthia renounced her power, was stabbed by a dying guardsman, and wandered into the woods, where she died in Werner's arms after making him promise to keep Victor off her path. Mephisto claimed her soul, and on the anniversary of her death Victor hosts that annual festival in Latveria. So I think I've made a strong case that any mention of Cynthia von Doom, even on a goofy coffee menu, has to be considered alongside her connection to Mephisto.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Mephisto from Ironheart

How could this work with the MCU's Mephisto, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, who first appeared in the finale of Ironheart? I've always said Marvel Studios doesn't cast an actor like Sacha Baron Cohen for a single episode cameo on a TV series.

Sure enough, Cohen was asked whether he'd be more likely to return as Borat in a movie or as Mephisto, and he said Mephisto. That's odd, since Borat is a character Cohen has complete control over. Appearing as Mephisto would be Marvel Studios' decision.

What Mephisto's deals and his 14 kings could mean for Doom

The Ironheart finale gave insight into the deals Mephisto made across MCU history. He mentions other clients: "You see, you're not my only client." He also references William Shakespeare, telling a character, "You're like a modern-day Shakespeare." Whether that came from Shakespeare taking a deal or refusing one, the two did meet.

Talking with Riri, Mephisto lists what he looks for: the exceptional and inquisitive, people who through no fault of their own end up at the short end of the stick. He admits that sometimes means the selfish and the stingy: "For example, out of the Forbes 100 richest list, I've made a deal with 100 of them. Plus 14 kings, three popes, and also a Beatle, Ringo." To me, that says Mephisto seeks people of lowly status with talent or ambition, then gives them the resources, access, shortcuts or luck to succeed, always at a cost.

As I've pointed out before, 14 kings would exclude many monarchs of human history, since most kings took the throne after a relative died and were born into the royal line. A prince is powerful enough that Mephisto wouldn't approach him unless he was low in the line of succession and needed a staged succession crisis. It's more likely those 14 kings were usurpers, lowborn figures who overthrew the king before them. That aligns perfectly with how Doom became king of Latveria by overthrowing Fortunov.

One hell, one Mephisto across the MCU multiverse

Is the Ironheart Mephisto of Earth 616 the same one from Doom's universe, presumably Earth 828 of the Fantastic Four? I've explained before that all MCU universes and timelines share the same cosmic realms. There's no TVA 616 and TVA 828. All the separate universes dump into the same Void and are observed by the same independent TVA. I like to think of these as the backrooms of the multiverse.

The Watcher occupies a fifth dimensional space that's part of those backrooms. The Quantum Realm could be another, given the Avengers tunneled through it to reach different timelines in Avengers: Endgame. And I think one of these backrooms could be hell. That would make this one Mephisto the Mephisto of every universe: Riri Williams' Mephisto in Earth 616 and the Mephisto of Victor and Cynthia von Doom in theirs.

Why Doctor Doom's sorcery depends on Mephisto

So did Downey's Doom have a mother named Cynthia who made a deal with this Mephisto? Whether or not Doomsday acknowledges it, yes, her deal with Mephisto is her canon event. Mephisto holding his mother hostage in hell is the only reason Doom works so hard to master sorcery on top of the science of his rival Reed Richards.

The fact that Doom's armor can stop Thor's Stormbreaker in the Doomsday trailer as I described it comes from Doom spending his life trying to undo the witchcraft that got his mother dragged to hell. Without that, he only would have been interested in science. It'll be interesting to see if, in one of these live action universes, Cynthia's deal with Mephisto included her lowborn son from the Zefiro clan rising to become king of Latveria, one of those 14 kings Mephisto mentioned.
