WandaVision Episode 7: Why I Think Agatha Harkness Wanted the Twins to Summon Mephisto
Agatha's reveal, the Nexus commercial, the Darkhold, the Fox Quicksilver theory and the Easter eggs from the episode that unmasked Agnes
WandaVision episode 7 confirmed what I'd been saying: it was Agatha Harkness all along. Wanda wasn't the one secretly responsible for everything happening behind the scenes. It was Agatha, the nosy neighbor Agnes, and I think she took the twin boys because she was trying to bring someone, most likely Mephisto or some combination of him and Nightmare, into our reality.
Credit to Marvel Studios for making us doubt that Agnes really was Agatha Harkness. Everything seemed to be revealed in this episode, or at least we were made to believe it was. I thought there was still more to it that we hadn't seen yet. Below I go through Agatha, the role of the Fox version of Quicksilver, what happened to the twins, the mystical book in Agatha's lair, and then the Easter eggs.
The Ag in Agnes was Agatha and the Ness was Harkness
We were right the entire time. The Ag in Agnes was part of Agatha, and the Ness was Harkness. In the comics, Agatha Harkness is a very ancient witch. She was old enough to remember 500 years before Atlantis sank to the bottom of the sea, so she's thousands of years old and very experienced in witchcraft. In fact, she was involved in the Salem witch trials.
It looks like she's been in the area for a while too, since she has a massive lair underneath her basement. That left the big questions: what exactly was Agatha's plan with Wanda, and what did she do to the twins?
Agatha wanted Wanda's twins from the very first episode
It's very clear to me that Agatha wanted the twins from the beginning. From the very first episode, Wanda was made to think about children. Then she was magically pregnant and had the twin boys, and Agatha was very involved in the whole process. Agatha was also controlling every other person who talked to Wanda about kids.
So why did Agatha finally reveal herself? Because she finally had the twin boys. When Wanda goes into Agatha's house and Agatha offers to make tea, Wanda looks around and notices the twins aren't there. She can see the sandwiches they had been eating, but the boys are nowhere to be seen. When Wanda asks where they are, Agatha very intentionally tells her they're probably playing in the basement. Agatha wants Wanda to go down there and see who she really is. To me, that furthers the point that this was about the two kids the entire time, and that her plan was complete, or mostly complete, now that she had them.
The Nexus commercial points to Wanda's next depression
The Nexus commercial in this episode is very revealing about Agatha's plans and Wanda's role in them. It's clearly about Wanda. It talks about taking the Nexus pill if you are depressed, which we know Wanda was, and says it will anchor you back to your reality or the reality of your choice. The side effects it lists include feeling your feelings, confronting your truth, seizing your destiny and possibly more depression.
That's what Wanda is about to go through. For the whole episode, she has kind of been depressed and has kind of stopped caring. She tells her kids she doesn't really have any of the answers, and she says she'd get up but she doesn't want to. Then she confronts the truth that Agatha is the one in control. Agatha has a destiny planned out for Wanda, and I think it involves taking away her kids, which is why she's going to be depressed again.
A nexus is a connection or a link to something, and that's what I think Agatha truly needs and is getting from the twins. In my view, she isn't working alone. She's trying to bring somebody into our dimension, and she needs a link to do it. That link is Wanda and her boys.
I think the twins are shards of Mephisto's soul
This goes back to what I'd been saying since before WandaVision premiered: the villain is Mephisto, or some combination of him and Nightmare. As I see it, the twins aren't Vision's kids. Wanda is magically pregnant. She couldn't have been impregnated by Vision, because he's a synthezoid and not human. She was impregnated by magic, just like in the comics, where the twins were shards of Mephisto's soul, and it seems like that kind of remains true here.
My theory is that Mephisto or Nightmare, or perhaps a combination of both, is stuck in another realm and can't get to the Earth realm. The only way in is if some part of them ends up there. Once a part of them is in the Earth realm, Agatha can use her witchcraft to bring them in completely. So the villain impregnated Wanda to get a part of himself into this realm, and now Agatha has taken the twins so she can bring him through.
As a side note, the villain could also be Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch. That's kind of hinted at by Agatha's bunny, Señor Scratchy. It could just be a little nod, or it could be him she's trying to bring over. In the comics, something like this did happen, and the nexus used was the bodies of the Fantastic Four members. So a similar story could be playing out, with Nicholas Scratch in a different realm. Either way, it could be Nightmare and or Mephisto that Agatha is trying to summon.
The Darkhold is how Agatha could summon the villain
I believe Agatha is going to use the mystical book shown in her lair. That book was the Darkhold, also known as the Book of Sins or the Book of Spells, an ancient book of spells and unspeakable power. It was created billions of years ago by the evil elder god Chthon before he was forced to Earth. He wrote all of his evil works and spells into an indestructible parchment of flesh, and he created it at Wundagore Mountain.
Wundagore Mountain has a connection to the Scarlet Witch. That's where the High Evolutionary enhanced Wanda, making her a conduit of chaos magic. If you're trying to summon somebody truly evil, like Nightmare or Mephisto or perhaps your son, from a different dimension, the Darkhold is definitely how you'd do it. I think that's why they put so much emphasis on showing it for a few seconds in Agatha's lair, and that's what I believed was in store for Wanda in the episodes that followed.
Agatha may have plucked Fox's Quicksilver from another universe
The episode revealed that Agatha was the one controlling Pietro. In the post credits scene, Monica, who followed Agatha and Wanda to the house, is snooping around and opens a door to Agatha's lair. Quicksilver comes up to her and says, "snoopers gonna snoop."
They made it very clear that Agnes was controlling Quicksilver, or maybe even created him. My guess is that, since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was supposed to be about the multiverse, Agatha truly did pluck Fox's Quicksilver from the Fox universe, bring him into the MCU, and take control of him just like she did with everyone in the town. I do believe he was still under her control in that scene and that he was most likely going to take Monica into the basement to Agatha.
But Monica had officially become Photon. At the time, I thought Monica combined with Wanda, and Vision when he eventually showed up, might be strong enough to break free from Agatha, and I expected to see that in episode 8.
Wanda's perfect reality falls apart from the first scene
The episode opens with a scene Marvel Studios had released on Good Morning America. Wanda talks straight to the audience, just like the characters in Modern Family. The first thing she does is feel for Vision beside her, but he isn't there. That's interesting, because the last thing we saw her do was extend the Hex borders to save him, yet this episode shows Vision still lying where he fell outside the Hex. She didn't go look for him. She's still wearing what she called her Sokovian fortune teller costume, so it seems she went straight home to bed.
I think she avoided Vision because she's trying not to face reality. She knows this world isn't real and doesn't want it to end, and he's pretty much aware of what's going on. That's why she takes a day to herself and doesn't really care anymore. The twins say their game is freaking out, and the controllers warp from Nintendo Wii controllers to Uno cards. Billy, or Wiccan, is in red and Tommy, or Speed, is in green, true to their comic colors even without the costumes. When Agnes arrives, Wanda opens the door with magic, not caring that Agnes sees it.
In the fridge there's product placement for Canada Dry and Florida's Natural, plus Sanka coffee. Sanka was created by researchers in Germany and first sold there and in other European countries, so it's most likely what Wanda would have drunk in Sokovia. The almond milk is a Westview Dairy product, and the cereal is Sugar Snaps. There is a cereal called Sugar Smacks, but this one references the Snap, which plays a huge part in her backstory: Thanos killed Vision to get the Infinity Stones, and when he snapped, she was one of the people who got snapped. The milk carton regresses, which confuses Wanda because she isn't controlling it, and the missing child on the back foreshadows her about to lose her kids. She then admits she doesn't really know what the reality warping is about, implying she never had that much control. It was really all Agatha.
The Office intro and the John Krasinski question
This was the best WandaVision intro so far: an Office intro. Randall Park, who plays Jimmy Woo, was in an episode of The Office playing Asian Jim in a prank on Dwight, and the real Jim is John Krasinski. Everybody was trying to connect that to Reed Richards, who everybody believed would be played by Krasinski. If he is indeed playing Mister Fantastic, that would be very meta and absolutely awesome. But Marvel is playing off sitcoms, and the show had reached the 2000s, when The Office and Modern Family were extremely popular.
The intro ends by saying WandaVision was created by Wanda Maximoff, which isn't really true since Agatha was behind everything. But it looks like Agatha was also the one turning things into a sitcom, so if she wanted Wanda to think she was in control, she would say it was created by her.
Hayward's launch could be a new form of Ultron
Director Hayward and a colleague reveal the signal is no longer active. That could be due to what Wanda did at the end of the previous episode, but I think it's more likely Agatha knew it was time to grab the twins and stopped keeping up the sitcom. Or, if the signal was coming from Wanda, she clearly doesn't care anymore.
Hayward says "we launch today." S.W.O.R.D., which used to be the Sentient World Observation and Response Division, is now the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division and is making sentient weapons. That's one reason Hayward had Vision. They were dissecting Vision, so if they modeled a weapon off of him using some type of AI, it could really be a new form of Ultron. Ultron can't really die. He's a computer who exists within the internet and can transfer his consciousness, for lack of a better word, into different robots. I was betting we hadn't seen the end of Ultron in some way.
The circus, Darcy and Vision's return
When Wanda expanded the Hex, she sucked in S.W.O.R.D. agents and Darcy. The agents became circus characters, which I see as a reflection of how Wanda views them: a bunch of clowns, especially since Hayward stole Vision's body. Hayward's former right hand man is now a strongman, and the S on his belt stands for S.W.O.R.D., similar to how Monica's name tag became a necklace. He tells Vision he's late for rehearsal with the escape artist, who turns out to be Darcy. Even though Darcy has been monitoring all of this, inside the Hex she has no idea who he is.
Vision and Darcy try to get back to the house. Vision thinks Wanda is putting obstacles in his way, but in reality it's Agatha. After hearing what Darcy says about Wanda's life before Westview, he seems to understand her, and he's clearly concerned about his kids. At the time, I had no doubt the kids would unite Wanda and Vision in the final episodes, and that they'd come together with Monica to fight Agatha.
Wanda tells the twins Pietro is not their uncle
When Wanda asks where their dad is, the twins offer to look for him, but she says if he doesn't want to be there, there's nothing she can do. Earlier, in the second episode, she simply did a retake when she didn't like something. Then she drops the bomb that Uncle P is not their uncle. She knows he isn't the Aaron Taylor-Johnson Quicksilver who died in Age of Ultron. She says she's starting to believe everything is meaningless, then says that was probably a little too dark, but their father is made of vibranium and they inherited tough skin. As I said above, I don't believe Vision is the father.
Agnes stops by right when Wanda needs her, and Wanda calls her a lifesaver, which is ironic because it seems like Agnes is about to kill her twin boys. Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau, described the last three episodes as incredibly sad, so we could probably conclude the twins were already gone or might be soon. When Wanda flinches at a request, Agatha says "boundaries i get it," which I read as a reference to the Hex boundaries she helped create. A plant then regresses back in time, representing Wanda's reality going backwards as she falls into depression and is about to lose her kids and possibly Vision.
Darcy's email, the engineer and Monica becoming Photon
Monica and Jimmy discover that Darcy broke through the firewall and emailed them. Hayward tried over and over to bring Vision back to life until Wanda stole the body, and the S.W.O.R.D. email Vision received earlier was a decoy from Hayward to locate him.
We don't meet the engineer, only Agent Goodner. But Monica says "they" and Goodner keeps saying "we," so I believe the engineer could be on site. In the background, one person on the left is in civilian clothes: jeans, a shirt and what looks like a jacket. Monica never said the engineer worked for S.W.O.R.D., which could explain the clothes, and from a distance he does kind of resemble John Krasinski, so perhaps the engineer is Reed Richards.
The vehicle built to enter the Hex has 9219-R on its side, and when I looked it up, 9219 is part of an ISBN for Young Avengers Presents number six. I thought it was all but confirmed the Young Avengers would come to the MCU, especially if Billy and Tommy made it out alive. The vehicle fails, Monica goes through herself, and she comes out the other side as Photon, looking like the hero from the comics.
The fight, the fly and Agatha's lair
Agatha isn't wearing her brooch at first, which some people theorized shows her and two kids, though she has it on later. She mentions her husband Ralph again, and I think it's very clear he's probably the villain I've been talking about, Mephisto or Nightmare, not yet in our dimension. When Monica enters Wanda's house and mentions Hayward, Wanda throws her up in the air and slams her down, but Monica's new powers protect her. Dottie and the mailman notice, and they could be involved in Agatha's plan. Monica says "don't let hayward make you the villain," and Wanda replies, "maybe i already am." Wanda believes she created everything, though I think Agatha most likely started it.
At Agatha's house, Wanda spots an insect on the curtains that resembles a fly, and in the comics Mephisto first appeared as a fly. In the lair there's what seems to be a ram's skull, ancient witch symbols above the archways, many skulls, cases with a red glow, the Darkhold with evil magic flowing out of it and, perhaps the biggest Easter egg, a demon face on the pillars. Agatha gets her own intro revealing it was her all along, including Quicksilver's return. As I predicted, she was faking when talking to Vision, to keep him away from Wanda and the kids. She reveals she killed Sparky the dog, and the episode ends with her laughing.
Given the Mephisto Easter eggs, I do believe he, or a combination of him and Nightmare, is who she's trying to bring into this realm, and she needed the kids because they are part of his soul.
Who do you think Agatha was trying to bring into this realm?
