Miles Morales Live-Action Movie: How Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange Could Set the Stage
From Aaron Davis clues to a rumored Home Worlds title, here is how I think Sony and Marvel are quietly building toward a solo Miles Morales film
Miles Morales looks increasingly likely to join the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think the pieces are already lining up. With confirmed reports that Doctor Strange is joining Spider-Man 3, and an increasingly likely Spider-Verse crossover that will include at least Jamie Foxx's Electro and J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson, I have been spinning theory webs that this is all part of a multi-title multiverse event that shatters the universe in WandaVision and condenses it back together in a specific way in Multiverse of Madness that gives us Wolverine and Deadpool.
This matters for fans because rumors are swirling that Spider-Man 3 could already have three Spider-Men in it, and if Miles Morales can headline his own awesome-looking game and a wildly successful animated film, I believe he can and will star in his own live-action film that is already in the pipeline. I want to break down how I think this all happens and clear up some confusion out there.
Miles Morales Already Exists in Live-Action Canon Through Aaron Davis
Miles Morales has already been established in the live-action universe through Aaron Davis, played by Donald Glover in Spider-Man Homecoming, when his character says, "I don't want those weapons in this neighborhood. I got a nephew who live here." With Sony seeing a ton of success with the Miles Morales character from Into the Spider-Verse, the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse 2, and probably the Miles Morales game, I think it is a no-brainer that the studio is going to pursue ways to feature Miles as a human face in the MCU.
Unconfirmed Rumors Point to an Actor Already Being Cast as Miles
I heard some unconfirmed rumors last week that the studio might already have an actor locked down to play Miles Morales. It is not verified yet, but I do not think any of us should be that surprised if it ends up being true. Many fans, myself included, have been fan-casting Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin in the role. He would be great, but he is one of many good options out there.
Peter Parker's MCU Origin Has Never Been Shown, and That Could Be the Door for Miles
It is worth noting that this live-action MCU version of Peter Parker's origin has never actually been shown on screen. We know there was an Uncle Ben Parker referenced through Peter's luggage in Spider-Man Far From Home, and Peter and Ned discussed the spider bite in Homecoming. If we ever do see that flashback event, I think that same experiment could have led to another spider, say number 42, biting another kid: a young Miles Morales of Brooklyn, nephew to Aaron Davis. But to be clear, I think Spider-Man 3 is too early to go this deep into the existence and origin of Miles Morales. A quick cameo, maybe, but he deserves his own story.
The Confirmed Timeline: Electro, Doctor Strange, and the Multiverse Rumors
On October 1st, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Jamie Foxx's Electro would be returning from the 2014 Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the upcoming Spider-Man 3, which was shooting in New York and scheduled to release in December 2021. Further rumors have speculated Foxx might not be the blue-skinned Electro from the Andrew Garfield film but a new Electro with a more comic-accurate green and yellow costume, though that has not been confirmed. A week later, on October 8th, the Hollywood Reporter also confirmed Doctor Strange would be joining the film, suggesting it ties into the MCU's apparent plans for a multiverse event. That news broke right as a pre-taped Rogue Theory episode came out pitching theories about the rumored returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, which now look more logically plausible to me.
A Warning About Unverified Scoops Claiming Maguire and Garfield Are Signed
A couple of days after the Doctor Strange news, some scoopers tried to claim ownership of the narrative, insisting they had inside sources confirming Maguire and Garfield were for sure signed, with one claiming, "I know it for sure. I can't tell you how I know it, but I do." My take is that this very well could end up happening, it is just not real yet, and these people are betting that it will, likely a smart bet, but they are doing it so they can claim victory later and boost their credibility without ever actually having anything, since it is impossible to prove otherwise. My advice is simple: do not reshare claims from random Instagram accounts, get information from legit trade publications or the verified social media accounts of cast and crew.
What We Actually Know About Miles Morales' Age and the Rumored Home Worlds Title
Based on Aaron Davis' concern about superpowered weapons in his neighborhood in Homecoming, I think we can assume Miles was still a kid during that film. But if Miles did not get blipped, that could age him up to the same present-day age as Peter Parker. I also suggested last week that Spider-Man 3 could carry a title like Spider-Man Home Worlds, and that Home Worlds title is now circulating as a rumor this week.
Why I Do Not Think Spider-Man 3 Will Be Miles' Story Yet
This movie is already getting crowded with confirmed and rumored characters. I still think we could see cameos from an alternate reality within the web of life and destiny in which Miles Morales is the primary Spider-Man of that universe, already suited up in black and red, rather than just a kid in nearby Brooklyn. But I do not think Spider-Man 3 will be Miles Morales' story yet, maybe just a glimpse to let us know, similar to the Aaron Davis line, that this kid exists and he is coming.
How Spider-Man 3 and Multiverse of Madness Could Work Like Infinity War and Endgame
With Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3, and past Spider-Man director Sam Raimi directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I think Spider-Man 3 will set up the rules of the world that Multiverse of Madness will then execute, the way Avengers Endgame operated within the rules Infinity War set up. I think we will see Doctor Strange confront Wanda Maximoff as the villain in Multiverse of Madness. It has also been confirmed that Xochitl Gomez is joining that cast, presumably as the star-kicking multiverse hopper America Chavez. I think the Multiverse of Madness battle will peak with Wanda collapsing and converging the shattered reality into one shared universe. I doubt we would actually see Miles during that convergence event itself, but based on the rules established in Spider-Man 3, I think we could retroactively apply him riding that convergence to end up already established somewhere within the MCU, badass suited up as Spider-Man.
Tom Holland's Contract Guarantees One More Crossover Event Before Miles Can Take Over
Based on the deal Sony and Disney signed last year, Tom Holland has at least two more Spider-Man movies on his contract: Spider-Man 3 and another mystery MCU crossover event. I see three options for what that event could be, each of which I have explored in other videos: an Avengers Fantastic Four event set up by Ant-Man 3's Quantum Realm, Kang, and Victor Von Doom timeline storylines; an Avengers Secret Invasion event set up by Captain Marvel 2 and the Nick Fury Disney Plus series; or an Avengers Secret Wars Battleworld event possibly set up by Shang-Chi.
My Prediction: Miles Morales Gets His Own Solo Film After Holland's Contract Ends
While Tom Holland closes out his contract as Spider-Man in whatever that next crossover event turns out to be, possibly as soon as the 2023 holiday season, I believe Sony will finally let Miles Morales step up in his own solo live-action film that is loosely connected to the MCU.
What do you want a Miles Morales live-action film to look like, and which of the three possible Avengers crossover events are you most excited to see set up next?
