Doctor Doom's Throne Revealed at Marvel's Shanghai Expo Booth, and It Hints at Avengers: Doomsday Secrets
Marvel's Bilibili World Shanghai display put Doom's throne beside the X-Mansion, Wakanda and the Baxter Building, and I think the stained glass behind it could point to the Library of Worlds
Marvel's booth for the Bilibili World Shanghai Expo has given us a new look at Doctor Doom's throne, and I think the setup tells us a little bit of new information about Avengers: Doomsday. The booth, which Disney built as a huge Marvel presence for the event, looks absolutely incredible.
Marvel's Shanghai booth brings Doctor Doom's throne together with the X-Mansion, Wakanda and the Fantastic Four
The setup includes the X-Mansion as a background, which is super cool looking, along with Captain America's shield, Doom's throne, the Wakandan throne and the Fantastic Four. All of it looks incredible. There's a better look at Doom's throne, which looks awesome, and the Wakandan throne looks great too.
The people attending this booth were in for a really big treat. But going through the individual pieces, I think several of them say something about the movie itself, starting with one image in particular.
The Avengers display hints at Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers and Thor going up against Doctor Doom
That image shows the Avengers logo with green lightning on it, Captain America's shield on the side and Thor's hammer on the left. You can actually catch both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker in there. I think this is very telling about the movie. The shield, I think, kind of sticks with Sam, so to me this suggests a fight with Doctor Doom involving those heroes.
Obviously there's going to be more than one fight with Doom, but at some point it looks like there could be Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers and Thor going up against him. Maybe a three on one. These are kind of the leaders right now. I would add Yelena Belova in there with the Thunderbolts as well, so my list of current leaders is Thor, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson and probably Yelena Belova.
Then there are the X-Men, with Cyclops as the leader along with Professor X. Just seeing all of these together in rubble gets me super excited for Avengers: Doomsday.
Four themed zones may map out the main locations of Avengers: Doomsday
The booth reveals multiple zones, which I would say probably reflect the main areas we're going to see in Avengers: Doomsday. There's the Avengers zone, the Wakanda zone, the X-Men zone, which is Xavier's School, and the Fantastic Four building, with the living room shown as well.
Each zone has a prop that kind of looks like a banner, with a location in the background. Behind the Avengers logo you can see the Avengers building. Behind the Wakanda logo you can see Wakanda. For the Fantastic Four there's the Baxter Building, and for the X-Men there's the X-Mansion. Really cool details.
This was a massive event, and the size of the booth showed it. At the time, Kevin Feige was attending the expo himself and was set to do a Q&A session, and it was said that he might talk about future Marvel projects. There were also rumors that Marvel might show something from Avengers: Doomsday, in which case I thought word of it would probably get out, even if only by word of mouth, because people would be talking about what they saw.
I think Doctor Doom's throne reveals how Marvel plans to portray him
Some of the coolest things here are in the throne room. I think it reveals quite a bit about Doctor Doom and how he's going to be portrayed in this movie, and I think it shows they're going to portray him in a way that really does him justice, and in a way that the fans really want to see.
The background behind the throne is what we've already seen in Marvel's countdown teasers. It looks to be stained glass, probably with a magical element involved. I think I actually know where this is. It's one of two places, and somehow they might be one and the same, which I'll get to below. I also noticed that the Marvel Studios logo is green now, which I think hits pretty hard, and I can't wait to see that on the movie screen.
Doom's throne looks insanely good. "That is a throne fit for Doctor Doom," I would say. It shows what he thinks of himself, because Doom is a pretty conceited guy. He's petty, he's a genius, and he's incredibly powerful with sorcery. There's so much to Doom, which is why he's arguably the best villain from Marvel, and of all time.
My theory is that Doom's throne sits in the Library of Worlds, not just Latveria
A lot of people, I think, automatically assume this is his throne in Latveria. Based on what the insiders are saying, Doom is from the Fantastic Four universe. There was a lot of talk in the weeks before this booth was revealed that Doctor Doom is actually from a different universe, but then some insiders came back and said no, he is from the Fantastic Four universe. There might have been a little confusion there, but they seem pretty confident.
Sure, this could be in Latveria, but because of that stained glass, I think he could actually be in the Library of Worlds. That's basically a place outside of space and time where he can look into other universes, essentially access to the entire multiverse. It's not just that he can go into other universes and get out of them; he can go to any point in time that he wants as well. I think that's going to be pretty important for a lot of different reasons in Avengers: Doomsday.
He could also tell what happened in the past, which means I think he could probably figure out everything he needs to know about Tony Stark.
Doctor Doom's link to Tony Stark needs a real connection
We still don't know what the connection is between Doctor Doom and Tony Stark, whether they'll go the adoption route or say that his parents fled to Latveria. I don't think their origins should be the same. There should be a Tony Stark origin and a Doctor Doom origin, but there needs to be a connection somehow. Otherwise some people will say Marvel just hired Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom as a gimmick, a marketing ploy to bring people back to Marvel. There has to be a good connection, and I think the Russo brothers definitely have that down.
One of the biggest things I think we'll see when it comes to Robert Downey Jr.'s face is Doom maybe tricking the Avengers about how he looks. That might not happen in Doomsday; it might happen in Secret Wars. We're unsure at this point. But if Doom has the Library of Worlds, and we've heard from insiders that he does have access to it, he could see the whole past of Earth-616.
If he has dubbed the heroes of 616, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men as the biggest threats, which they obviously are if you're getting down to the last universes, he would probably want to look into their history. And Doctor Doom's going to notice, "Hey, I look exactly like that Tony Stark guy." A lot of people have been theorizing about a connection between that and his face and body being messed up after the snap, and I think there could be some type of connection there as well.
More than anything, though, I think Doom will use the fact that he looks like Tony Stark to his advantage. From what we've heard, his body is disfigured, but his face should still resemble Tony Stark, because it is still Robert Downey Jr.
Doom's family, an incursion and the rumored Sue and Franklin twist
Since he is in the Library of Worlds, I do believe that at some point Doom perhaps lived in another universe, on another Earth, because we've heard that Doctor Doom is going to have a family, and that his family, unfortunately, is going to die. The reason is that an incursion is happening. He's trying to build a machine that stops the incursion, and it explodes. It scars him, and it kills his family.
The reports are a little bit conflicting right now. Some say that happens in the Fantastic Four universe. Maybe it happens because of the machine and not the incursion itself. Or maybe he's on another universe, the incursion happens, and he simply goes to the Library of Worlds and back to his original universe. At one point we did hear that his family is on another universe, and that his wife is Sue and their son is Franklin. That would line up, because in the leaked concept art for Avengers: Secret Wars, he has Sue and Franklin by his side along with Doctor Strange.
At the same time, he could be in his own universe, and the machine could be a sort of preemptive strike. He knows the incursion is going to happen to the Fantastic Four universe, he tries to fix it, and it doesn't work. So he goes to the Fantastic Four, explains everything, and tells them their universe is going to be destroyed and they have to leave for another universe. And it's all part of his big master plan.
Why I think this throne is for Doomsday and not Secret Wars' Battleworld
I really do think this could be in the Library of Worlds, especially because of the stained glass, and I think there's going to be a rune concept, a magical concept, to it. But at some point he could simply bring it all into one space, which would be Latveria, because based on everything we've heard, the final battle is going to take place in Latveria. Doom having a throne for himself outside of space and time also makes so much sense if you know a lot about his character.
Regardless, it looks awesome. I do think Doctor Doom is going to have vast multiversal knowledge in the movie. That's why, based on what we've heard, I think he has decided he needs the multiverse to be destroyed. He needs all these heroes who are a threat to him out of his way so he can do what he wants and create Battleworld.
I don't think this throne is for Battleworld, though, because they're teasing Doomsday, not Secret Wars. We've seen the concept art for Secret Wars, and that throne looks different; it's all very medieval looking. This one is ascended, elevated, tall and pretty magnificent, to be honest, and it's something Doom would make for himself. It's a little glimpse into Doomsday, and I think it looks super awesome.
Do you think Doctor Doom's throne sits in Latveria or in the Library of Worlds?
