Tom Holland Clarifies Spider-Man Future, Shares Touching Moment With Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield
The MCU star explains his comments about passing the mantle to Miles Morales or Spider-Woman, and reveals an emotional on-set exchange with his fellow Spider-Men
Tom Holland has clarified comments he made previously about his age and the Spider-Man role, addressing what he says has been widely misunderstood. When asked about his earlier statement that something would be wrong if he were still playing Spider-Man at 30, Holland explained his true meaning in a recent interview about his film Uncharted.
"That quote I think has been slightly misconstrued," Holland said. "What I basically was trying to say is that if I am 30 still playing Spider-Man and I haven't passed on the baton to a Miles Morales or a Spider-Woman or something more diverse, then I would have done something wrong in the sense of the sort of duties I have to the character."
Holland emphasized that he was not suggesting playing the character into his 30s would make him a failed actor. Rather, he meant it as a responsibility to the franchise and its fans. "I could see myself playing this character into my 30s," he added, expressing confidence in the films' future and describing their current material as "really special."
In a separate interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Holland praised Andrew Garfield's redemption arc in Spider-Man: No Way Home. "Without question I could not be happier for him," Holland said. He reflected on never reaching out to Garfield when he took over the role and expressed regret about that decision. "This film was our opportunity. It was not only an opportunity for him to make peace with the character and the studio but it was also an opportunity for me and him to have this moment where we realized we could share this thing."
Holland noted that Garfield's emotional reaction when saving MJ was genuine, allowing the character to experience the rescue he could not achieve in his own films. Holland also praised Garfield's Spider-Man films as "fantastic and brilliant in their own right."
Holland revealed that the famous thank-you scene between the three Spider-Men on the rooftop was inspired by a real moment on set. Before filming one of his emotional close-ups, Holland approached Maguire and Garfield and thanked them for their contributions to the character. "Thank you for doing this, thank you for being here, thank you for elevating Spider-Man in the ways that you have, thank you for being so gracious and allowing me to share this with you," he told them.
Holland noted that Maguire had not acted in nearly 10 years to return for the film. "We all embraced each other and we were all crying because it meant so much to us," Holland said. Director Jon Watts, producer Amy Pascal, and the writers witnessed this genuine moment and decided to incorporate it into the film's farewell scene.
