Deadpool & Wolverine 2 Is Reportedly Coming, and Kevin Feige Just Hinted at It
A sequel to the record breaking team up looks likely, though the timeline points to well after the Multiverse Saga wraps up
Deadpool and Wolverine could be teaming up again a lot sooner than most people expected. I think a lot of fans assumed the solo pairing would be a one and done deal, separate from the guaranteed appearances in Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars. But Kevin Feige recently, just last week, heavily hinted that Marvel is consistently looking at where these two characters could be placed again, and that points to something bigger than just the two team up films we already know are locked in.
That is not the only Deadpool news floating around either. Ryan Reynolds recently teased on Instagram that he had just shot something else in the Deadpool costume. He posted a photo captioned "that was fun today," followed by another shot with him in the suit alongside Leslie Uggams, who plays Blind Al, captioned about seeing "the gorgeous legendary one and only Leslie Uggams." Christmas decorations were visible in the background, which led a lot of people to guess this was a holiday special tied to a new project.
Rob Liefeld Says the Reynolds Tease Is Just a Blu-ray Special, Not a Sequel
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld said that Disney and Marvel Studios are not done with variant Blu-rays for Deadpool and Wolverine, and to look out for a special holiday edition announcement coming soon. So despite the Christmas imagery, this is not connected to a sequel. It sounds like it will just be a variant Blu-ray release, possibly with some deleted scenes or a special message from Reynolds himself, but nothing tied to Deadpool and Wolverine 2.
Feige's D23 Brazil Comments Tie Into a New Report on the Sequel's Timing
Going back to D23 Brazil a week earlier, Feige was asked directly about the future of Deadpool and Wolverine. His answer: "The plans with Deadpool and Wolverine will always be the same we're always wondering where we can fit them in and how fast so it's on their radar." That comment lines up with a new report claiming Deadpool and Wolverine 2 is happening, and that it will land after the Multiverse Saga wraps.
That timing is interesting because it means that if the soft reboot everyone has been hearing about for a while does happen, these two characters are going to survive it and keep existing in whatever new timeline gets built around them. The next saga is expected to bring in a lot of new characters, including the X-Men and a new Fantastic Four, and hopefully a new Doctor Doom with a proper buildup, backstory and origin this time. That is not a knock on how Robert Downey Jr was brought in, just an acknowledgment that his introduction happened fast.
The Biggest Surprise Is That Fox's X-Men Characters Get to Survive the Reboot
I did not expect any of the Fox X-Men characters to survive the reboot, but when you are dealing with the number one rated R rated movie of all time and fan reaction that has been excellent for the most part, it makes sense from a studio standpoint to keep it going. Studios need to make money, they are businesses, and Marvel is owned by Disney, which loves money. There is nothing wrong with that on its own.
The only concern is not wanting to see the studio beat a dead horse and keep milking the content until it starts to suffer in quality. I do not think Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Feige would let that happen with these characters. For what it is worth, Deadpool and Wolverine makes my personal top five greatest MCU movies, even though I think there were some problems with it that could have been improved. If Marvel keeps what worked and fixes what did not, the sequel could end up better than the first film.
Blade's Endless Delays Might Actually Be a Good Sign for How Marvel Handles This
Blade has been kind of a mess in development, but I am actually glad it keeps getting delayed. Feige has said Marvel is committed to making the movie, which in theory means it will happen eventually. The reason for the repeated delays, new directors, new writers and full script rewrites seems to be that they are trying to get it right. If that same mentality gets applied to every other project, including a Deadpool and Wolverine sequel, the results should be solid, especially given how much Reynolds and Jackman genuinely care about these characters.
An Insider Claims the Sequel Lands After the Multiverse Saga, in Phase 7 or a Reset Phase One
According to an insider called My Time To Shine, who has been hit and miss so this should be taken with a grain of salt, Deadpool and Wolverine 2 is coming after the Multiverse Saga ends, meaning Phase 7, or if everything gets fully rebooted, a new Phase 1. As Deadpool told Wolverine in the film, Disney is going to make him do this until he is 90, so these characters are not going anywhere anytime soon.
It also makes sense that another Deadpool and Wolverine movie could not slot into the current Multiverse Saga, because there is simply nowhere to fit it. The known release dates for Phase 5 and Phase 6 leave no room. On top of that, the film established that their home universe, Earth 10005, is essentially the Fox X-Men universe, and that world is set to collide with the main 616 universe in Avengers Doomsday or, failing that, Avengers Secret Wars. Filming on those two films is about to begin, which leaves no time to shoot a sequel until after they are done.
Gambit Could Return in a Sequel, and Marvel Reportedly Wants More of Channing Tatum's Version
I would like to see Gambit return in Deadpool and Wolverine 2, and I am hoping to see him show up somewhere in Doomsday or Secret Wars as well. Reynolds recently mentioned that Marvel is obsessed with Channing Tatum's Gambit, and Tatum reportedly would do anything to get that solo Gambit movie made or simply return to play the character again. There seem to be a lot of elements from Deadpool and Wolverine that could carry into the rest of the Multiverse Saga and beyond, including a sequel and possibly that Gambit solo film.
Do you think Marvel should make Deadpool and Wolverine 2, or would you rather they leave the pairing at one massive success?
