Avengers: Doomsday opening: does it start on Steve and Peggy?

Insider reports pointed to a direct sequel opening, a Doom visit to Steve and Peggy, and a post credits scene for the Endgame rerelease

Avengers: Doomsday opening: does it start on Steve and Peggy?

Insider reports claimed that Avengers: Doomsday would pick up exactly where Avengers: Endgame left off, opening on Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's final dance. Another report claimed the theatrical rerelease of Endgame would carry a post credits scene leading straight into Doomsday. None of this was confirmed, but I think the reported opening would work as a strong start, and a new post credits scene would make a lot of sense.

Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers announced that Avengers: Endgame (2019), starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, would return to theaters in September 2026, a few months before Avengers: Doomsday released. I see it as a smart marketing move. Marvel needs Endgame to become the number one movie of all time, because that's good promotion for Doomsday. But the new insider reports suggested there might be a more specific purpose behind bringing it back.

Daniel RPK reports Avengers: Doomsday is a direct sequel to Endgame

According to Daniel RPK, Avengers: Doomsday is going to be a direct sequel to Avengers: Endgame. When I first heard that from him, it seemed like Marvel was almost trying to move past Phase Four and Phase Five and not talk about what happened. I understand why, because many of their plans got messed up around Kang and Doom.

According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, they originally weren't going to make Kang the main villain. Jonathan Majors' performance in Loki season 1 was so good that they decided to make him the main villain because of it. Then, before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania came out, Feige said they thought Kang probably wouldn't be received too well. I don't know if that's because they saw the quality of Quantumania, but they had already started to pivot toward Doom and toward Robert Downey Jr. returning.

All of that led to a change in direction. I wouldn't say Marvel is going to erase Phase Four and Phase Five or act like they didn't happen. But they might not touch too much on those story points in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The reported Doomsday opening: Steve and Peggy's dance from the end of Endgame

Another insider report added to this, saying: "Spoiler alert, Avengers Endgame ends with one scene. Doomsday begins with the same scene." Endgame ends with Steve holding Peggy in his arms as the two of them dance in their house. We already know Avengers: Doomsday filmed scenes at that house, and big outlets have reported that Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are returning.

It all seems to be coming together. The Russo brothers did say that what happens at the end of Avengers: Endgame connects to Victor von Doom's story in the MCU in Doomsday, which I find very curious. So the reported plan is that Doomsday picks up directly from Endgame's final scene.

How Doom could learn that Steve Rogers caused an incursion

If that's the first scene of the movie, what I'm expecting is that Doom shows up. Somehow he finds out that whatever Steve Rogers did, going back in time, caused an incursion. According to other insider reports, which aren't confirmed, Doom goes to a place where he can see the archives of the entire multiverse. That is how I believe he would find out what Steve did, and it's why he would show up.

I do think it's a good opening scene, because it picks up right where Endgame left off. Endgame ends with the two of them slow dancing, Doomsday begins with that, and then Doom shows up. I think that's a powerful scene. Time is going to work in a very interesting way in Doomsday, and they could do a time jump as well.

Could Avengers: Doomsday rewrite Steve Rogers' happy ending?

I know some fans might not like this. Some people feel Steve deserved his happy ending, and they wonder what this means for the end of Endgame, where old man Steve comes back and gives the shield to Sam. Is Doomsday going to erase the ending we knew? At this point, we don't know. But it does seem like Doomsday might rewrite a little of what we know happened.

That's why I don't know what's going to happen with the Phase Four and Phase Five stories, but it seems like maybe they won't become irrelevant. It would be hard to call Loki's story irrelevant, since it's obviously going to be a huge factor for Doomsday. The same goes for the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I think it's going to be like a reset: they'll ignore some things and say other things are important, which I understand.

MCU Source reports an Endgame rerelease post credits scene leading to Doomsday

There was also a new report from MCU Source, and I've seen other insiders state this online too: the rerelease edition of Avengers: Endgame will have a post credits scene that directly leads to Avengers: Doomsday. We can't confirm if this is true, but I think it would make a lot of sense as a way to tease Doomsday even more.

It would give one more chance to build up Doctor Doom, which I think many fans would appreciate. One of the biggest concerns people have about Doomsday is that there hasn't been much buildup to Doom. We've had some with the Thunderbolts post credits scene and the Fantastic Four post credits scene, where we saw the back of Doom and his mask. Thanks to insider reports, we know a little about why he wants Franklin Richards, who might be a variant of his own son from another universe.

Marvel has done small teases for Doom, so it makes sense they would do another. What this scene could be, we don't know, but we would assume it builds up Doom in some way, with Doom in it. I don't think it's going to be a full reveal. I think it would be similar to the Fantastic Four post credits scene, where maybe we see the back of his hood.

My guess for an Endgame post credits scene: Doom walking up to Steve and Peggy's house

Maybe they show Steve and Peggy dancing again, or maybe they show a zoomed out shot of their house and a person in a green cloak walking up to it. If I had to guess what scene they would add to tie into Doomsday, that would be it: you take a step back, see the house from outside, and walking up to the door is Doctor Doom.

We did see some leaked post credits footage of a person opening a door to some type of house or building, and it did look like Robert Downey Jr. I don't know if that's related to this or to the general scene of Doom going to Peggy and Steve's house. But we have heard that this is what happens: Doom visits Peggy and Steve.

Why Loki reportedly showing up to save Steve makes sense

We also heard that Loki visits them, which I think makes sense. Doom would be so much more powerful than Steve and Peggy that I don't see how they could walk away from a fight. If Doom is trying to kill people who caused incursions, Steve is in trouble. At the time, Loki was also very powerful, and he wouldn't have to fight Doom. He can simply take Steve away and save him that way.

If everything we've heard about Steve and Peggy returning and Doom visiting them is true, that opening would explain right away what Doom is doing: you caused an incursion, the multiverse is going to be destroyed, and as its savior he has to kill you. It establishes his motives as good in his own mind, but also establishes him as the villain, because he's going to try to kill Steve.

Then it establishes Loki, who is holding everything together, going up against Doom, who wants to save everything his own way. Marvel Studios revealed at a cinema event in Italy that Loki is on the Avengers team, with the biggest emphasis on the Russo brothers and Doctor Doom. So it's going to be Loki's team versus Doom's team for the fate of the multiverse.

I think that opening, with Steve and Peggy, then Doom and Loki showing up, would be a good way to start the movie. I also think a post credits scene that showcases and builds up Doom a little more would be really good. I hope this is what happens, and I think it makes a lot of sense.
