Into the Spider-Verse Delivers a Great Origin Story for Miles Morales
A non-spoiler look at why the animated Spider-Man movie felt different from the Spider-Man stories we already knew
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an amazing movie. Going in, I was not doubting the film itself, I was just concerned because I wanted them to give Miles Morales justice, and they did. It was a great on screen premiere for him and a great origin story, but most importantly it was different, and different in a really good way.
It was not the typical Spider-Man story we have seen a handful of times. I am not saying the other ones are bad, but we know that story already, so this was a nice refreshing change while still staying true to Spider-Man and to Miles Morales. A big part of that difference came from the fact that it was an animated movie, but even then it was not a typical animated movie either.
The Animation Style Makes Into the Spider-Verse Feel Like a Comic Come to Life
The film was very slick and very fast, which made for some great action scenes, and it was very comic-like. "It was really like I was watching a comic on the big screen," and it was really cool how everything blended together. The movie had so many aspects to it that just worked, from the story to the action to the character development and build up, and it was also really funny.
Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, and Spider-Ham Join Miles and Peter
One of the most brilliant things about the movie was seeing all of the different Spider-Man and spider people from different multiverses come together and interact, and it was not done in a weird, chaotic way. The story made sense, it did justice to Miles's origin story, and it centered on this version of Peter Parker, who has been Spider-Man for a really long time, helping Miles, who has no idea how to be Spider-Man.
Spider-Gwen was one of my personal favorite web slingers to see included. Spider-Man Noir was a really good character to have in there and he was hilarious. Peni Parker, the animated girl character in the movie, added a completely different aspect to the film, but it really fit, and the dynamic between her character and the rest of the spider people worked extremely well.
Spider-Ham was probably my least favorite of the group, not that I did not like him, I just enjoyed the other spider people much more than him. That said, plenty of people said he was hilarious and loved him, and the film made him fit very well with the rest of the group regardless.
Miles Morales's Character Development Works Because Peter Parker Actually Teaches Him
I loved the character development of Miles Morales, and I loved that Peter Parker was there to help him. He does not just jump right into being Spider-Man, it takes him time to learn, and he freaks out at first, as anybody would if they got bit by a radioactive spider and suddenly had powers.
On top of learning his powers, Miles has to deal with being in middle school and with parents who love him but smother him about getting good grades, so he has to figure all of that out at the same time. He turns to Peter Parker for help, and then he has the rest of the spider people come in and they encourage him as well.
The Fight Scenes Pack in Multiple Spider People Against Multiple Villains
The fight scenes are really awesome because you have a bunch of different spider people fighting a bunch of different villains. I loved how the film incorporated different villains, since if you are going to have multiple spider people, you might as well have multiple different villains to match them.
It was almost like taking five different action scenes from five different movies and slamming them into one, and the film did it in a really brilliant way.
The Soundtrack Got Me Hyped Enough to Download the Songs
To top it all off, the music was really, really good. It got me super hyped up, and I had already downloaded some of the songs from the movie. Basically everything just worked, the story, the animation, the action, the character development, the character interactions, and the music all came together for an overall amazing movie.
What did you think of how this film handled Miles Morales compared to the Spider-Man stories we already knew?
