MCU X-Men Roster Reportedly Includes Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost and Storm, With Mr. Sinister as Villain

An insider with a strong recent track record laid out the first X-Men lineup for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside casting rumours and a story built around Cyclops and Jean Grey.

The new X-Men team lineup for the Marvel Cinematic Universe was reported in mid July 2026, and it pointed to Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X and Magneto as the core roster for the X-Men film planned after Avengers: Secret Wars. Beyond the roster, there was news on the actors reportedly in the running for several of these roles and on what Marvel Studios has planned for the story of the X-Men, including a very specific reason for bringing in Jean Grey before anyone else, which I will get to below.

Some of these new X-Men could also turn up before the X-Men film itself. We had heard from other insiders that some of the new X-Men, meaning the ones set to be part of the new team, are going to appear in Secret Wars. So not only would we have the old Fox X-Men, but we would start to see some of the newer X-Men as well.

A credible insider puts Cyclops and Jean Grey at the heart of the X-Men roster

The roster came from an insider who has recently had a lot of scoops confirmed to be true, so there is a lot of credibility behind it. I think a lot of people would expect this list anyway, but I think this is probably what we are going to see for the new X-Men team in the MCU. I also think we should probably see some of these characters sooner than others, rather than waiting until the actual X-Men movie arrives.

Jean Grey is the clearest example. I think it is widely believed at this point that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, and I believe it. If you are going to have Jean Grey, you have to have Scott Summers as Cyclops. I think the story of Cyclops and Jean Grey is actually going to drive a lot of the start of the mutant saga, and that makes sense because there is a lot you have to go into when you start with those two.

I am not talking about the Phoenix saga there, but I do believe they are going to do that too. Yes, I know it has been done before, but Marvel Studios has not done it, so they have to do it themselves.

Emma Frost, Rogue and Storm round out the reported lineup

Next on the list is one I love: Emma Frost. I think having Emma Frost in the MCU, especially right off the bat, would be a fantastic idea and really great. That is something I think the original films did not really touch on, and I think a lot of people would like to see it. I know the later ones did touch on her, and I know a lot of people really liked her in the X-Men '97 animated series across season 1 and season 2. Of course, Marvel Rivals deserves a mention there too. We will have to wait and see.

Then there is Rogue. I think Rogue makes a lot of sense, especially if we are going to have Gambit, even though Gambit is not on this list. So we will have to wait and see on that.

Storm is also on the roster, and I really do think Storm might appear in Black Panther 3. We had heard that some mutants will appear in that film, so it would make perfect sense for Ororo to show up there and start a Black Panther and Storm romance story. That is another big story they could go down, and I would really love to see it.

Adam Driver as Magneto split opinion

The last two names on the main list were Professor X and Magneto. We had heard that Marvel Studios might have cast Adam Driver as Magneto, and reading through people's reactions, opinion seemed pretty split. Some people really loved it, some really hated it, and some were taking a wait and see approach on what he can do.

For my part, I do think he is a great actor. We will have to see what the look looks like, but either way I think he can deliver acting wise.

Bill Skarsgård and Patrick Wilson were linked to Professor X

There were a lot of casting rumours around Professor X. According to MyTimeToShineHello, Bill Skarsgård was in talks for a role in the MCU X-Men reboot. It was unclear which character he would play, but one source believed it could be Charles Xavier. "I don't know how I feel about that." To be perfectly honest, I do not think I want that. I think he would do a great job, and he is a great actor, don't get me wrong. I like the actor. I am just not sure I see it.

Patrick Wilson was also reportedly being considered for Professor Xavier in Jake Schreier's X-Men reboot, a rumour we had heard a lot. "I think he has the look, but I think he'd have to change his voice a little bit." Based on what I have heard from him before, I do not think it would be that hard for him. I totally think he could do it, and I think that is a great look for Professor Xavier.

Beast and Angel were heard but not confirmed for an X-Men First Class style team

The insider behind the roster also stated that they had heard, but were unable to confirm, that two other characters were being talked about for the lineup: Beast and Angel. Because they could not confirm these names, take them with a grain of salt.

Still, these two are part of the X-Men First Class team in the comics, so it just kind of makes sense. If they are going to really dive into what the first class of X-Men are and maybe go into some of the comic stories, I think Kevin Feige wants to do that and I think Jake Schreier probably wants to do that. Put together, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, Magneto, Beast and Angel make a pretty strong roster for the first characters in the franchise.

Mr. Sinister and Madelyne Pryor are reportedly why Jean Grey comes first

The roster gets even stronger when you compare it to the villain plans. According to another insider, the decision to introduce Jean Grey well before any other X-Men character in the MCU had a reason. Marvel Studios reportedly wants Mr. Sinister to be the major villain in the X-Men movies, and wants the Madelyne Pryor storyline brought to the big screen as soon as possible. The early introduction of the MCU Jean was described as a strategy to captivate the audience until that happens.

A lot of insiders have also said the X-Men in the MCU will focus on Cyclops and Jean Grey, which makes a ton of sense. Cyclops is going to be the leader of the X-Men, leading Professor X's team in the field, and Jean and Cyclops are going to serve as the foundation of the mutant saga.

Other reports said Angel, Rogue and Nightcrawler were being considered for the main lineup. So it sounds like Angel and Rogue are making the cut, and maybe Nightcrawler, but we will have to wait and see. Wolverine was not included, and we had heard that Marvel Studios plans to keep Hugh Jackman's Wolverine around for a while.

One of the biggest things from the insiders was that Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse are the saga's big villains, and I think that is the way to go. They are "two insanely, well, cool, but also big villains," and I think they are pretty specific to the X-Men, so I think these stories would actually do really well.

The X-Men film was reportedly set to start filming in spring 2027

As of July 2026, the same roster insider reported that the Marvel Studios X-Men film was set to start filming in spring 2027. That is basically right when Avengers: Secret Wars would be done, so the plan would be to finish that film and then go into production on the new X-Men movie. Kevin Feige had said the X-Men are coming after Secret Wars, so it looks like the next movie after Avengers: Secret Wars really is going to be the X-Men film. That is why it made sense that the cast was basically being finalised at that point.

We had also heard a lot about Sydney Sweeney being in talks for Emma Frost. I think she has the look. The only question is whether she has the acting chops, but I think she would actually do a pretty good job, and I think she looks kind of perfect for the role.

Charles Melton was reportedly the front runner for Beast

Last but certainly not least, three names were reportedly being considered for Beast, from an insider who has also had a lot of scoops proven true. Logan Lerman, Jesse Plemons and Charles Melton were all reportedly considered for the role of Hank McCoy, with Charles Melton the front runner.

That is interesting, because I kind of thought Jesse Plemons had the best look overall to play Beast, but I actually think all of these are pretty decent choices. Everything seemed to be in full motion, with casting decisions being finalised, a roster that is most likely set according to all these reports, Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse as the villains, and a franchise focused on Jean and Cyclops, which I think is the right move.

Who would you rather see as Professor X: Patrick Wilson or Bill Skarsgård?
