Avengers Doomsday Reportedly Doing Reshoots With New Cameos That Could Push The Runtime Longer

Insiders say fresh scenes are being filmed for the Marvel crossover, and the character list keeps growing.

Avengers Doomsday is reportedly in the middle of reshoots right now, and from what I'm hearing, a lot is being added, including cameos from characters we did not expect to see in the film at all. On top of that, this additional shooting could actually change the runtime. There is a rumored list of characters that might show up, and then there is a much more solid list of people who really do seem to be heading into the movie.

Avengers Doomsday's Runtime Could Grow Because Of New Additional Scenes

When the original runtime came out, plenty of people reacted with something like, anything under three hours, we need more. I actually agree with that. Given everything going on in this movie, I feel like it needs to be more than three hours. I'm hearing that Avengers Doomsday could end up with a longer runtime because of new additional scenes being filmed right now.

These new scenes are being reported across the board from insiders, and some cast members have recently confirmed that reshoots are indeed happening. So more scenes are happening, whether that means improving something that already existed or adding brand new material. We are hearing that the original cut of the movie, before editing, is supposed to run around three hours and thirty minutes.

I would love that. It sounds like the plan is to cut that down to around two hours and fifty minutes, but with a cast this massive, spanning the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and potentially the Hulk and Spider-Man on top of that, I worry that cutting it down that much means character arcs, specific stories, and meaningful subplots could get cut. I hope whatever they are adding, fixing, or filming new actually makes it into the final film.

Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye Tease And Mark Ruffalo's Hulk Reportedly Point To Avengers Doomsday

According to insider Daniel RPK, Marvel is currently filming Doomsday and adding many new cameos, and some of these are not just cameos but fairly big players. A few actors have recently teased that they are indeed going to be in the film. The biggest tease so far comes from Jeremy Renner, who recently posted an Avengers related Hawkeye tease on Instagram. The timing lines up well enough that most people, myself included, believe it points to Avengers Doomsday rather than just an Endgame anniversary post. It also looks like some version of the West Coast Avengers could show up in the film, which might explain what Clint Barton has been up to.

Wanda Maximoff has also been rumored for the movie for a while now, reportedly as one of the witches following Doctor Doom. Based on her arc across the MCU, from Ultron to fighting alongside the Avengers to grieving and turning to anger, I think she wants redemption, and Doom persuading her that he is the true savior of the multiverse would fit with how Kevin Feige has described Doom, saying he thinks he's the hero. Doctor Strange being pulled into that same orbit also tracks, since Multiverse of Madness already flagged him as a threat when John Krasinski's Mr. Fantastic said the biggest threat to the multiverse is Doctor Stephen Strange. I think the bigger payoff for Wanda comes later in Secret Wars, where she gets a real redemption arc after everyone realizes Doom was never the good guy.

Separately, it was reported that the Hulk filmed scenes for the X-Men film, which according to insider Jeff Sneider has now begun filming. I don't think the Hulk fits into a movie meant to stay focused on the X-Men, so those scenes most likely belong to Avengers Doomsday instead, even though nothing has surfaced yet tying Hulk directly to Doomsday rather than Secret Wars. The same uncertainty applies to Spider-Man, who is still alive going into this. I think the real explanation is scheduling. With a cast of over sixty people, coordinating everyone takes time, which is why Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Elizabeth Olsen are reportedly coming back even though confirmation has been slow.

A New Reshoot List Names Doctor Strange, Deadpool And Wolverine, And The Young Avengers As Likely Additions

One insider has reportedly heard a list of characters either doing reshoots or filming their first scenes for Avengers Doomsday. Doctor Strange is on it, which tracks given Benedict Cumberbatch already backtracked after previously saying he would not be in the movie. Deadpool and Wolverine are also on the list, and that makes sense since Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have both done things recently like filming material at SDCC and Disney's D23. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is reportedly set for the opening scene, which fits since he already returned in No Way Home and is expected to play a bigger role in Secret Wars.

Photon and Captain Marvel are also named, and I had not talked about Captain Marvel before now because there simply had not been any news on her, and sometimes no news means no news, meaning she is not in the film. But according to this list, both Photon and Captain Marvel are unannounced additions, which would make sense given how The Marvels ended with Captain Marvel searching for Monica Rambeau. It sounds like she had not filmed scenes yet, but may now be filming during this current round of reshoots.

Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, and America Chavez, essentially the Young Avengers, are also on the list, and it makes sense for most of them to appear, with Riri being the first time we have really heard her name attached. Valkyrie, Hulk, and She-Hulk round out another chunk of the list, which fits with Thor reportedly heading back to Asgard and leaving Love in Valkyrie's care while he goes to fight Doctor Doom, something already teased in the special looks. Leaked concept art for Secret Wars has also shown She-Hulk and the Hulk alongside his son Skaar. That same leaked concept art shows Star-Lord and Wong, both also on this list. I'm curious how Star-Lord factors in, since he is currently on Earth and there is apparently a space crisis brewing, and he would know plenty about what happens out there. Clint Barton and Owen Wilson's Mobius round out the list as well.

Nick Fury, War Machine, Wiccan, Speed, And Others Are Listed As Mixed Signals

Beyond the more solid names, there is a separate report described as mixed signals, meaning it could go either way based on what insiders are hearing. That list includes Nick Fury, War Machine, Wiccan, Speed, Clea, OB, B-15, and X-23. I think an old school Nick Fury coming back would go over well after Secret Invasion, and the same goes for War Machine returning even without getting his own Armor Wars project.

Wiccan and Speed fit given how WandaVision, the upcoming Vision Quest, and Agatha All Along have all been building toward reuniting the Maximoff family, meaning Vision, Wiccan, Speed, and Wanda herself. It has reportedly been said that Vision Quest connects more to Secret Wars than to Doomsday specifically, but seeing these characters show up here would still make sense. At this point, with a cast this size and a multiversal story, almost any character feels like fair game.

Who are you most excited to see out of all of these rumored cameos?
