Avengers Doomsday Trailer Reportedly Coming This Weekend Alongside Endgame Encore, Robert Downey Jr. Talks Redefining the Genre
Robert Downey Jr. explains why he came back as Doctor Doom as insiders point to a new trailer, a possible cast tease, and fresh detail on Steve Rogers and the incursions.

A new Avengers Doomsday trailer looks like it could be coming this weekend, right alongside the theatrical return of Avengers Endgame Encore. I just heard from Robert Downey Jr. about coming back as Doctor Doom, and there is a rumor, unconfirmed, that a cast announcement could ride along with that new trailer too.
The Avengers Doomsday emojis went live today, which tells me something is happening. On top of that, a lot of insiders are talking online right now about a new trailer coming, and possibly something involving the cast, at the same time that Endgame Encore is back in theaters.
Robert Downey Jr. says Doomsday is Marvel's attempt to redefine the superhero genre
On the latest Marvel podcast for Avengers Doomsday with Aman Bani, Robert Downey Jr. was asked about coming back as Victor von Doom after such an epic sendoff in Endgame. His answer was direct: "What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies." The same conversation also touched on Marvel's approach to the project, with the line, "We love a challenge and we figured, wow, let's really mix it up and see if we can get ourselves excited because if we're excited, the audience will soon follow."
That is certainly true, and it is also a big, heavy statement to make about redefining the whole superhero genre. That is a tall order. But so far, what we have seen from Doomsday is kind of living up to it, especially with the new scenes we got with the re-release of Avengers Endgame Encore in IMAX and Infinity Vision. Those scenes are heavy and really, really great. I personally just love the TVA scene. I think it sets up Doomsday in such a big and great way.
Why the new trailer reportedly got pulled from Japanese screenings
It would make sense for Marvel to release a new Doomsday trailer right now to get people to go watch Endgame Encore again. There are fans who are going to see it no matter what. I would have gone to see it in theaters even without new material attached, and I am sure a lot of people are the same way. But to pull in people who might not have gone to see it otherwise, releasing a new trailer and getting them excited, then advertising Endgame Encore, makes sense as a strategy.
From what I am hearing, the original plan was for this new Doomsday trailer to be attached to Endgame Encore. According to reports online, it was reportedly removed at the last minute yesterday from screenings in Japan. That is probably because Marvel did not want it to get out, since at this point pretty much all of the extra scenes have leaked online anyway, with people on the East Coast, and in Japan and Korea, filming screenings and posting them.
Insiders Carl and Cryptic HD Quality offer conflicting signals on trailer timing
The trailer was reportedly, though not confirmed by Marvel, set to release globally on September 25. At first I was hearing it would be attached to the US showings, but the actual announced date is September 25, going by Marvel's US time zone, so it should release worldwide from there.
The insider known as Carl, who has a track record of reports that have been confirmed true, says his source told him the trailer is after Encore. About 20 minutes later he followed up saying not to rule out American screenings, and then stated that something would be shown worldwide on Friday, September 25, according to his source. Separately, the insider Cryptic HD Quality has said the trailer is not attached to any international theaters yet, but believes it might land on the 25th to promote the release of Endgame Encore, which again lines up with the logic of the whole promotion.
A rumored cast announcement, still unconfirmed
There is a rumor going around, and I want to stress that this is a rumor, that there might be some kind of cast announcement riding along with this Doomsday trailer. Do not take it as confirmed. We have already seen promotional bits from the cast before, so it would not be unprecedented.
I would not expect a reveal of the Secret Wars cast, even though that is what I have seen floating around online. I do not think we get that until after Avengers Doomsday, if it even happens at all. The chair video was a big moment, but that came a really long time before we saw anything from Doomsday, and I do not think we will have to wait that long after Doomsday for something on Secret Wars. This could instead be some unannounced characters for Doomsday, or it could just be another promotional marketing bit like the one Marvel did before with Paul Rudd, Robert Downey Jr., and the rest of the cast riffing on lines they had said.
Spoiler alert: Hulk's return raises a Spider-Man question
Spoiler alert for the Avengers Endgame Encore new scenes here. One of those scenes shows that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk is going to be in Doomsday. Since Hulk was just in Spider-Man Brand New Day, that makes me wonder why Spider-Man would not also show up in Avengers Doomsday. Could Doom have shown up and gotten Spider-Man too? Could that possibly have been the glitch in the post credit scene for Spider-Man Brand New Day? I do not know at this point, but we are hearing something might go down with the cast, and it could reveal more members for Doomsday.
What else the next trailer might show, according to James Mack
According to James Mack, the next trailer is also expected to include the incursions. We already got some cool incursion scenes on screens with the new Endgame Encore material, but I would really like to see one play out from the perspective of somebody on one of the planets that is about to collide with another. Be really dark, be really serious, but again, this movie is supposed to be pretty heavy, and I think Doomsday needs to do that at some point, not just show the main planets, since it is going to come down to three universes by the end.
The next trailer is also reportedly supposed to show the Latverian witches, whose costumes Marvel has already shown at several comic cons, so that would not exactly be a secret. It is also reportedly expected to give a look at Beast, who we have not seen since the post credit scene for The Marvels. I think his look might end up a little different from what we saw there, though probably close.
I also want to see more fights with Doctor Doom. So far we have seen him raise the Sentinels against Thor, and we have seen Reed Richards holding him and screaming, "Victor, did you do this?" which I love. But we have not seen many more people actually fight him. I want to see that, even if I want most of it reserved for theaters. Maybe him deflecting Mjolnir. That would be pretty cool.
A spotlight on Steve Rogers and the beef with Doctor Doom
The spotlight on Steve Rogers already comes with Avengers Endgame Encore, clearly setting up that he did something wrong and that Doctor Doom is going to be very unhappy about it. Doom has already stated it in the trailers: "You have all lived stolen lives and you're going to give them back." That is basically him saying the Avengers went back in time and screwed things up, starting a domino effect of the multiverse beginning to collapse.
Doctor Doom is here to save everybody, but I do not think it stops there. I think by the end of the film he is saying, in effect, "No, let it be destroyed and I'm going to build it my way." That is Doctor Doom. I think we might get a bit of that in the next trailer too, since it is supposed to spotlight Steve Rogers, and there is going to be real beef between Doom and Rogers because Doom blames him for a lot of what happened to him, which we do believe unfortunately includes the death of his wife and son. That could lead to some very dark scenes in Avengers Doomsday.
Do you think this weekend's trailer is really coming worldwide, and will it come with a genuine cast reveal or just more promotion for Endgame Encore?
