New Spider-Man: Brand New Day Footage Reportedly Shows Spider-Man Using Shocker Tech Against a Savage Hulk
Fresh TV spots and a leaked art book point to brutal Hulk fight scenes, a Punisher team-up, and no sign at all of Sadie Sink's mystery character.
New scenes from Spider-Man: Brand New Day showing Spider-Man fighting the Hulk have pushed my excitement for this movie higher than I thought it could go. Hulk fans are going to be thrilled watching these scenes, and one or two of the fight moments look incredible. Savage Hulk is back, and there is a leaked art book to break down too, including a Guardians of the Galaxy Easter egg I really like.
I do not know how it leaked, but someone posted a full flip through of the official book for Brand New Day online. That has since been taken down, but images from it were captured before it disappeared, and there is a lot in those images worth going through.
Spider-Man Uses Shocker's Weapon Against the Hulk in a Standout New Shot
In one scene, Spider-Man has what is believed to be Shocker's weapon and uses it against the Hulk, which is a genuinely cool and unexpected shot. Whether Peter took it directly from Shocker or modified it himself is not clear yet. Jumping into the air against a Hulk this angry and this big looks incredible, and if you freeze frame the end of the clip, it looks like the Hulk might just grab Spider-Man out of the air and throw him.
The shading in this footage is quite dark, so it is hard to make out a lot of color, but the book suggests Marvel may have moved away from a Grey Hulk design, which I know will disappoint some people. I never thought the grey version teased earlier was going to be the actual Grey Hulk character from the comics anyway, just the Hulk getting so angry he turns gray, so this does not bother me much.
A Falling Building Scene Shows More Villain Tech Strapped to Spider-Man's Arms
A recent TV spot shows the Hulk and Spider-Man falling down a building together, with the Hulk grabbing Spider-Man and throwing him away before Spider-Man catches himself with a web. If you freeze frame his arms in that shot, it looks like more Shocker tech is strapped to them. It appears Peter is collecting gadgets from the villains he fights and modifying them in his apartment or base camp rather than building everything from scratch, which feels like a very Peter Parker thing to do.
Reportedly the Hulk Keeps Getting Angrier Because Spider-Man Is Too Fast to Catch
According to what I am hearing, the reason the Hulk keeps getting angrier while fighting Spider-Man is that Spider-Man is too fast for him, repeatedly slipping away. Spider-Man is not stronger than the Hulk, since the Hulk has no real limit on how strong he can get, but he is much quicker and has webs that can knock the Hulk down. There is a scene where Spider-Man runs up a wall, does a back flip, webs the Hulk, and throws him down, but that will not be how this fight ends, because the Hulk will just keep getting angrier.
It sounds like the Hulk is the first person taken over by the mysterious virus or villain behind the story, someone I do not believe is Sadie Sink's character. My guess is that it is Jackal, though that is not confirmed. Apparently whoever is controlling people tries to take over Smart Hulk first, and when Smart Hulk cannot overpower Peter, Green Hulk breaks out and loses complete control.
Brand New Day May Be Set to Surpass No Way Home's Opening Weekend
Right now it looks like this movie is actually going to surpass the worldwide opening weekend of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is remarkable given how huge that film was. With scenes like Spider-Man literally fighting the Hulk now surfacing, that kind of opening starts to make sense to me.
The Leaked Book Suggests Punisher Shares the Same Building as the Hulk Fight
The leaked book shows that Punisher is involved in this storyline, and it looks like some of these scenes take place in the same building where Punisher and Peter Parker appear. There are character designs for Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Punisher together, and Punisher is probably in over his head here, since bullets will not stop the Hulk and he has no powers, serum, or radioactive spider bite backing him up. I expect a lot of shooting that looks great on screen, plus Spider-Man saving Punisher more than once, and I am hoping Spider-Man calls him Red in the film, even if some people will not love that choice.
A report from MurphysMultiverse.com states that the book features a large number of facial studies and concept art pieces that intentionally push Savage Hulk's facial geometry away from resembling Mark Ruffalo, aiming for a more comic accurate, brutal look, which I am fine with. That report also states that the creative team considered rendering Smart Hulk's form as gray before ultimately abandoning that idea and defaulting back to the familiar green version so as not to confuse casual audiences.
A Rocket Raccoon Easter Egg Ties the Department of Damage Control's Arsenal to the Guardians of the Galaxy
The art book explicitly confirms that Rocket Raccoon has an influence on the film's lore. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the Department of Damage Control built a sophisticated New York headquarters, and concept art shows its armored arsenal was engineered from scavenged Chitauri and Sakaaran tech along with leftover designs Rocket built during his time on Earth. I hope the finished movie mentions this somehow, even though I doubt Rocket himself actually shows up, though that would be a cameo people would get excited about.
Concept Art Hints Peter Finally Tells MJ Everything While Hiding Out in Punisher's Basement
Among the leaked pages is a picture of MJ and Peter sleeping in Punisher's basement with his mask off, which suggests Peter may finally tell MJ what happened to him before. I would personally like to see that, and I think it fits what this movie is about: you cannot just push things aside or bottle everything up forever, or eventually you explode or go through a transformation, which is something Tom Holland has already touched on regarding the story.
Sadie Sink's Character Is Completely Absent From the Official Movie Book
The most striking thing to me about this leaked book is that there is nothing at all about Sadie Sink's character in it, even though this book is supposed to come out alongside or after the film. That tells me Marvel is going to serious lengths to keep her role secret, likely because most people already assume she is playing Jean Grey, and Marvel does not want to spoil that Jean Grey or a new version of the X-Men are entering the MCU before audiences see the film for themselves. I saw the original video myself, and the person flipped through every page. There was nothing about her character anywhere, while there was plenty on the Hulk and Spider-Man fighting alongside Punisher.
Between these new scenes and TV spots, I am more excited than I thought I could be, and I did not expect the movie to clear the bar I already had for it. That said, I think Marvel should ease up on releasing more footage at this point, since I counted two new TV spots in a single day recently on top of ones from the days before. Everyone already seems pumped, so I would rather see the rest saved for the film itself.
Would you want Peter Parker to finally tell MJ everything that happened to him before this movie is over?
