House of the Dragon Proof: Even Rhaenyra Isn't One of the "Good Guys"

House of the Dragon does not really have clean heroes, and the Driftmark succession crisis proves it. Rhaenyra knows Luke isn't a Valyrian, yet she still pushes for him to be named heir to Driftmark, and treats anyone who questions that as a traitor.

This matters for fans because it reframes Rhaenyra, one of the show's most sympathetic characters, as someone willing to bend the truth and punish dissent to protect her own bloodline's claim, which colors how her later fight for the throne should be read.

Rhaenyra Knowingly Backs Luke as Heir to Driftmark

Going back to the Driftmark crisis, Rhaenyra is fully aware that Luke is not a Valyrian, meaning he is not actually Laenor's biological son. Despite knowing this, she still advocates for him to be named heir. Anyone who dares question that legitimacy is treated as committing treason.

Vaemond's Anger at the Court Scene Is Justified

When Vaemond goes to court to challenge the succession, he has every right to be upset about it. "I would be pissed off if someone who wasn't my blood was stealing my home from me," is the reaction to Vaemond's situation, framing his outrage as completely reasonable given what he knows.

Why This Undercuts the Idea of Clear Heroes

"This just goes to show how even the characters we love are far from perfect." Rhaenyra's willingness to knowingly install a non-blood heir and brand truth-tellers as traitors is presented as direct evidence that House of the Dragon does not offer straightforward good guys, even among its most beloved figures.

Do you think Rhaenyra's actions during the Driftmark crisis make her less sympathetic, or was she just protecting her family the only way she could?
