GTA 6 Leaks Point to 60 FPS on PS5 Pro as Rockstar Delays Trailer 3 Past Pre-Orders
Fresh listings, a Polish podcast leak and reporting from Insider Gaming and The Hollywood Reporter fill in what pre-orders left out, from performance modes to a possible physical edition.
Pre-orders for GTA 6 went live on June 25th, and I expected trailer 3 to drop alongside them the same way Rockstar did it with Red Dead Redemption 2's third trailer. That is not what happened. Instead, Rockstar opened pre-orders, revealed the cover art, dropped a batch of new screenshots, confirmed the 80 dollar price tag, showed off the ultimate edition, and gave us zero new gameplay footage.
Rockstar led with pre-orders instead of GTA 6 trailer 3
The fact that Rockstar did pre-orders first before dropping any new footage tells me trailer 3 was not coming immediately. My read is that the team is deep in development right now, and they likely do not want to pull marketing focus or developer time toward cutting a trailer when they could instead keep polishing the game before showing more footage.
Strauss Zelnick had said marketing would not begin until summertime, and pre-orders opening June 25th hit that window almost to the day, so the campaign was clearly rolling. Rockstar just was not leading with a trailer as its first move.
Holding footage back looks like a deliberate strategy
Given the pricing context, dropping trailer 3 alongside the pre-order news would have made the 80 dollar base edition and the lack of a physical version the entire story that day. Getting the pricing backlash out of the way first, letting it settle, and then hitting people with actual gameplay later reads as a smart sequencing move to me, since it lets the excitement of new footage bury the ultimate edition discourse.
With pre-orders already live, there is also no pressure from Strauss Zelnick or the rest of Take-Two for Rockstar to rush the rest of the marketing, since the money side of the launch is already locked in ahead of the November release.
No collector's edition feels like a missed opportunity
Beyond the 100 dollar ultimate edition, there is no collector's edition, no map, and no steelbook. Compare that to GTA 5, which had a steelbook, a map and a money bag, or Red Dead Redemption 2, which shipped a collector's box stuffed with extras. For the biggest game of the decade to walk away from that kind of extra revenue does not add up to me.
It feels like Rockstar could be intentionally holding things back, with a real chance they come back later with trailer 3 and reveal physical copies plus a proper special edition with maps and extras that fans have been wanting. It might just be deliberate timing for later in the campaign, but for now it does not make sense to me.
Leaked retailer listings describe Leonida, two protagonists and an in-game social feed
Around the same time, listings surfaced on retailer sites including Amazon Brazil and another retailer whose name I am not certain of the pronunciation of, and these should be taken with a grain of salt since we do not know their validity until Rockstar confirms anything. The Amazon Brazil listing described exploring "Vice City beaches, swamps, small towns and various regions of Leonida," two playable protagonists who "switch between Jason and Lucia during story" missions as a duo, and "a more vibrant open world" with NPCs that have their own routines and random events.
It also mentioned "integrated social networks," letting players "watch viral videos, follow influencers, and discover world events" through an in-game mobile phone, which sounds like scrolling something like TikTok inside the game. It followed that with fairly standard Rockstar boilerplate about next generation graphics, advanced lighting, dynamic weather and detailed environments.
The other listing said GTA 6 "redefines the concept of open world sandbox gameplay" with "the most massive, dense, and insane map ever created by Rockstar Games," describing neon-lit Vice City streets, swamps, beaches and suburbs across Leonida, alongside a "living world controlled by AI" that "pulsates in a hyperrealistic way." It also referenced next generation graphics and performance on PS5 and PS5 Pro, saying the game is "developed natively to extract maximum power from Sony's hardware" with advanced ray tracing, global illumination, realistic dynamic weather and optimization for PlayStation 5 Pro, plus "improved performance, more stable frame rates FPS, and even sharper resolutions on the most powerful console on the market."
A Polish podcast leak claims 30 FPS and 60 FPS modes are planned
Rockstar has been running ads that say "Play best on PS5," which lines up with the idea of a stronger performance mode on more powerful hardware. According to the Rock and Borys podcast, a Polish podcast, GTA 6 will have two graphics modes on PlayStation 5 and Series X, a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode.
One of that podcast's hosts previously leaked a new Witcher 3 expansion correctly before CDPR announced it, which is part of why I give this claim some weight. Even so, it comes from a single source, and that source said the 60 FPS mode might not be ready at launch, adding they were not certain it makes the November 19th release and that it could arrive in a post-launch update instead. The same report says the development team is still in a heavy crunch.
On Series S, the report claims performance is currently locked to 30 FPS, with Rockstar reportedly pushing to add a performance mode, possibly with help from Microsoft, though I do not see the Series S hitting 60 FPS. Digital Foundry separately pushed back on a true 60 FPS mode for Series X, calling it unlikely, and instead floated a 40 FPS mode on both PS5 Pro and Series X, comparable to what Cyberpunk 2077 offered.
Digital only at launch sparked backlash, and reports disagree on a physical release
The absence of a physical disc at launch became one of the most talked about parts of this whole rollout, and I understand the frustration from people who care about game preservation. I will say upfront that I am biased here since I am pre-ordering despite normally telling people not to pre-order games, so I am not the most objective voice on physical versus digital for this one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are no plans for Rockstar to do a physical edition of GTA 6, though that likely just describes the situation at this point in time rather than ruling it out permanently. Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming reported the opposite, citing the retailer ppe.pl, which said it heard from Rockstar support that GTA 6 will get a physical release, but not until months after launch, possibly December or later.
Releasing digitally first meant Rockstar could develop the game right up until launch day and push a final build out on release rather than having to lock a version months earlier to get discs printed. If a physical edition follows later, that also points to people double dipping, buying the digital edition at launch and then buying it again physically once that edition arrives, so anyone upset about missing a disc on day one likely will not have to wait too long to get one.
What do you think is really behind Rockstar holding back both trailer 3 and a physical edition until later in the campaign?
