GTA 6 Extended Gameplay Look Heads to Netflix on August 27, and It Might Run a Full 30 Minutes

Rockstar's next big reveal is landing in an unexpected place, with a possible bug in the streaming app hinting at just how long the footage could be.

GTA 6 is getting its next big gameplay reveal very soon, and the way Rockstar is doing it is honestly the strangest marketing decision this franchise has ever made. We finally know the day we're getting the next big look at the game, and it's supposed to be pretty significant, with 30 minutes of gameplay footage potentially on the table.

The Extended Look Was Set to Premiere on Netflix Before It Hits Rockstar's Own Channels

Rockstar confirmed that a Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look was scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Thursday, August 27th at 3:00 p.m. ET. It was also due to launch on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website, but not until 9:00 p.m. ET that same day. Somehow, someway, Netflix was getting the early premiere six hours ahead of everyone else.

If you're in the UK, you were probably going to be staying up until around 2:00 a.m. to watch this thing unless you pay for Netflix. On August 27th, the plan was for the full extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 to run on Netflix exclusively for six hours before it hit the Rockstar YouTube channel for free.

Netflix's Region Locks and Paywall Create Real Access Problems

There's a bunch of concerns I have regarding region locks. Netflix has region locking, not to mention a paywall locking Grand Theft Auto 6 behind a subscription, which is not something I expected to happen. Most people effectively had a choice: get Netflix to watch it early, or wait the six hours to watch it for free.

Here's the reality of the situation. Some people have Netflix subscriptions, but plenty of others don't, and they're not going to buy one just for a 30 minute event. There are also entire regions with limited access, and people at work or school who only have access to YouTube. It really is weird that Rockstar is choosing Netflix given all of that.

Why I Think Rockstar Picked Netflix Over Its Own YouTube Channel

I think there are a couple of reasons behind this. First and foremost, it's money. Netflix probably signed a big check to get the exclusive rights to premiere this thing six hours early.

Then there's the other reality. If I remember right, YouTube had a premiere for GTA 6's first trailer, and that thing leaked early. We don't know the full details of why, but the assumption is that somebody with back end access to YouTube leaked it. If I'm Rockstar, I'm rolling the dice on whether a YouTube premiere leaks early, but going with somebody like Netflix, whose security is pretty top notch and who has been doing a lot of live events lately, avoids that risk.

Not only is it the money, which is probably going to pay for a significant part of development, it's also that it's more secure and lets them do a proper premiere without the potential of this completely leaking online and ruining the day. I think Rockstar was really burned by what happened with the first trailer and wants to avoid that as much as possible. Obviously, we have to call a spade a spade here too, this is more greed, extracting as much money as possible out of consumers. It is unfortunate, but I do have to be fair that six hours isn't the end of the world since it's free after that.

Leaks After the Event Are Basically Inevitable

Whether this thing gets mirrored right after the six hour window depends on how Netflix handles it. If it's a livestream, it's probably not going to leak until after the 30 minutes are over, but if it's a VOD they're premiering, that's going to leak almost immediately. After the event happens, this thing is going to get uploaded so quick.

Will there be takedowns on YouTube and other platforms? Absolutely. But will there be mirrors of it as soon as it's uploaded? Without a doubt. I have no doubt in my mind that the second this thing is done streaming, it will be uploaded to various sites, probably some sketchier ones, streamable, and it's probably going to be on Kick, since a Kick stream is probably going to go through the entire event without getting taken down.

A Reddit-Discovered Bug Reportedly Points to a 30-Minute Runtime

Here's the detail I think a lot of people missed, and it's the reason I think this reveal is a much bigger deal than most of the coverage is treating it as. Right after the announcement, Reddit users discovered what appears to be a bug in the Netflix app that seemingly revealed the runtime for the GTA 6 extended look. The number that came back was a full 30 minutes, and multiple users have now reported the same thing.

I have to say that number could absolutely be a placeholder. It might be only 20 minutes, or it might be 10 minutes of pre-show followed by 20 minutes of actual extended look. We don't know if there will be developer interviews or anything like that. This is really untreaded water for GTA and Rockstar. They've never done something like this before.

The Case For and Against a Full 30-Minute Deep Dive

Here's why I lean toward the 30 minutes being real. Rockstar doesn't need to put a five minute trailer on Netflix. If this were a standard trailer drop, the entire Netflix partnership makes really no sense. You don't negotiate a first of its kind streaming deal, build a dedicated landing page, and set up a six hour exclusivity window for something you could just throw up on YouTube like they did the last two times.

I do have to mention there is some pushback on this. One argument going around points out that Rockstar's narrated gameplay trailers going back to Red Dead Redemption have run somewhere between roughly four and six minutes, averaging about four and a half minutes, so this one could land around seven minutes rather than a full 30 minute deep dive. Even so, I really feel like this is going to be significant, because it says extended look. If it were something more like a three to five minute or seven minute piece, they would just do it on YouTube instead of going through Netflix.

I think Rockstar is at the point where it's basically saying, "we don't need to give you a trailer, we don't need to do any further marketing. Here's the game, take a look at it." It's an extended look, have fun, now stop asking questions and I'll see you in November.

What 30 Minutes of GTA 6 Might Actually Show

My honest expectation is that we're not going to get 30 minutes of raw gameplay. I think it'll be a mix of cinematics, narrated gameplay segments, and maybe developer commentary at some points, although Rockstar really doesn't do that that often. Some people have suggested this could be like a day in the life of Vice City and the greater Leonida, showing off different areas and pointing the camera at various NPCs, maybe even playing some of the in-world radio shows or broadcasts to break down the happenings in Leonida.

I do think somewhere in that 30 minutes we're going to get actual gameplay. Two trailers in, the community still has no concrete information about how the game actually plays, no mission structure, no UI, nothing, and this is the moment that could change that. I had a feeling for a while that the next footage would be gameplay rather than another cinematic trailer, just based on how close we are to launch, roughly three months out. What I didn't expect was something this significant. I was thinking a standard gameplay trailer, maybe four to six minutes, maybe a state of play style reveal, not a Netflix event.

I still have some hope they'll include a trailer premiere within this event, showing gameplay breakdowns and in-world footage before revealing trailer 3 at the very end. It's also possible trailer 3 ends up being the launch trailer, though I think that might actually be trailer 4. As we move into September and October, that's when I expect further gameplay showcases and maybe some teasers for GTA Online. We really are in untreaded waters right now, and I cannot wait to see what Rockstar does with this event.
