Breath of the Wild Fireproof Guide: How to Get Free Flamebreaker Armor and Survive Death Mountain
Catch fireproof lizards in a safe corner of Eldin Canyon, cook an elixir at Foothill Stable, then trade lizards at the Southern Mine for a free Flamebreaker Armor.
To travel around the Goron region, the Death Mountain area and the wider Eldin region in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you need fireproof gear or some type of fireproof elixir. Without one of them, you will die pretty quickly. You can get the Flamebreaker Armor for free, and I will teach you how.
A lot of people are having troubles with this area. Even I had a little bit of trouble with it, so here are the ropes, step by step.
Brew a fireproof elixir before going near the Southern Mine or Goron City
Before you go anywhere close to the Southern Mine or Goron City, you are going to need a fireproof elixir. There are a couple of methods for getting one, but the method I use is this: get a fireproof lizard and some monster parts, put them in a pot, and call it a day.
The first step is finding the lizards. You need to head into the lower part of Eldin Canyon, the part where you can move around without having to worry about getting killed by the heat. That is the safe zone where you can go looking for your fireproof lizards.
The camera rune and Sheikah Sensor make fireproof lizards easy to track down. Every time you get close to a fireproof lizard your sensor will go crazy.
Once you spot a lizard, take out your camera rune and snap a picture of it. I actually kept my older picture because it looked really good, but either way you want a photo of the fireproof lizard registered.
Next, crouch again, go into your map and hit the Sheikah Sensor by pressing Y. Select fireproof lizard as the target. From then on, every time you get close to a fireproof lizard, your sensor will go crazy. The way you catch these little critters is to literally crouch around and pick them up.
I recommend catching 15 fireproof lizards, though around 12 could do it
You are going to need at least 15 of these lizards to completely get all the fireproof gear and the elixir you need to actually get up the mountain. I recommend 15, but you could probably get it done with around 12.
Cook the elixir at Foothill Stable, directly south of Eldin Canyon
Once you have found enough of those pesky fireproof lizards, head to a cooking pot. I recommend Foothill Stable, which sits directly south of Eldin Canyon on the map.
At the pot, hit start and find your fireproof lizard. Hold it in your hand, then add a monster part. You can use any type of monster part; I went with a Lizalfos Tail. Drop them into the cooking pot, let the little jingle play, and you have yourself a fireproof elixir.
Head to the Southern Mine first, and use the springs for hearts on the way
With the elixir ready, travel up into Eldin. You can go to Goron City, but I suggest going to the Southern Mine first.
A really quick pro tip as you travel to the Southern Mine: if you get into the little springs along the way, they actually give you hearts.
Trade 10 lizards at the Southern Mine for the free Flamebreaker Armor
When you get to the Southern Mine, you will see a man down there who gives you a quest to find and capture 10 fireproof lizards. You already did that in the safe area, so you can simply talk to him, hand over your 10 lizards and make the deal.
In return you get a fireproof tunic, the Flamebreaker Armor. That is the exact name. Once you have it, hit start and put on your new tunic. Having both the Flamebreaker boots and the tunic will allow you to travel all the way through this area.
Goron City's armor shop sells the rest of the Flamebreaker set
To get the rest of the Flamebreaker gear, go to Goron City, which is located north of the Southern Mine. When you get there, you will see a little sign marking the armor shop, and to the left it has all the stuff you need.
The pants, which they call the Flamebreaker boots, cost 700 rupees. Another piece costs 600, and another costs 2,000 for some reason. With that, you have all the fire resistant gear you need to travel Death Mountain and not die whenever you are in the Eldin region.
How many fireproof lizards did it take you: the full 15 I recommend, or did you get it done with around 12?
