Hogwarts Legacy 2 Just Got Confirmed in an Official Warner Bros Discovery Shareholder Letter
A line buried in WB Discovery's Q2 2026 investor document names the sequel directly, and the timing lines up with the HBO Harry Potter series
Hogwarts Legacy 2 just got a big update, and Warner Bros put the sequel in writing for the first time in an official capacity. We have had rumors and job listings for months, plus previous executives saying things, but this is different because it came directly out of the official WB Discovery Q2 shareholder document, and the specific phrasing buried in the text is pretty interesting. It moves this project from well known secret to official priority for WB.
What makes this so interesting is the timing. With the HBO Harry Potter series only weeks away, Warner Bros is staring at an extremely narrow window to align its biggest projects, and it seems to know it. There is also a catch, because previous job listings from Avalanche have left me a little concerned about the direction of this game, which I get into below.
The Warner Bros Discovery Q2 2026 letter names Hogwarts Legacy 2 directly
The document is the Warner Bros Discovery second quarter 2026 shareholder letter, published recently. Buried in the studio section, in the paragraph about the games business, is this line: "We expect games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy." That is it. There is no trailer, no logo, just WB Discovery calmly listing a Hogwarts Legacy sequel in a line item in its forward looking financials.
Those forward looking statements are essentially a pulse check for investors, the kind of document that helps people decide whether to buy or sell down the line. Companies do not casually name unannounced products in those things unless the product is real, it is funded, or at the very least they are comfortable telling investors this is what they have in the works.
This is not the first time we have heard about a sequel, but it is the first time it is on paper
I want to clarify something here because I have seen a lot of people treat this as the first time the game has ever been acknowledged. That is not right. Variety reported back in 2024 that a successor to Hogwarts Legacy was one of the studio's biggest priorities a couple of years down the road, and Jason Schreier reported at Bloomberg that Avalanche was indeed working on a sequel. So the sequel existing is not new information.
What is different is that this is literally on paper, in a shareholder letter, which is a legal document. We have had comments from multiple executives saying it is going to happen, but now it is written into a full legal filing that says this is a big priority, and that is really exciting on its own.
Warner Bros calls it the biggest individual title in its four franchise strategy
The letter also noted that during Q2, Warner Bros released Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which it called the highest rated Lego game ever, alongside the Game of Thrones Dragonfire mobile game. Those were described as the first launches under a refocus strategy built around four key franchises: Harry Potter, Batman, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat. From what has released so far, they seem to have done a good job with that plan, and Hogwarts Legacy appears to be next.
On the earnings call, Warner Bros said directly that the biggest individual title to look forward to is the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy, followed by a line about having "a detailed plan for the next 3 to 5 years with a lot to look forward to." WB executive JB Perrette also said earlier this year that the real fruits will start coming in 2027 and 2028 when the company returns to its biggest franchises. That is not definitive or set in stone, but it could be a hint about the release window.
Job listings for an online multiplayer RPG have me a little concerned
Hogwarts Legacy was a colossal success, crossing 40 million units sold worldwide after launching in February 2023, as a single player game with no meaningful post launch content, no story DLC, and no definitive edition. That success raises the question of whether Avalanche will follow up in the same style, and this is where I have some concerns, though not major ones.
Avalanche Software had job listings for a senior software engineer describing work on an online multiplayer RPG, covering scalable back end services, player data persistence, matchmaking, lobbies, and server infrastructure, plus a world lead designer for another unnamed online RPG and a lead narrative designer for someone who could adapt narratives to multiplayer frameworks including PvP, PvE, matchmaking, and live service updates. A lot of people ran with that and assumed Hogwarts Legacy 2 itself would become a multiplayer live service game.
That is only one side of the story, though. Avalanche has also been actively recruiting separately for a high quality single player action adventure RPG set in the Wizarding World, which is Hogwarts Legacy 2. My take is that these look like two separate projects, a full story sequel and a separate online spin off of some kind. If Avalanche wants to build something multiplayer alongside the main game and it fits what they are already making, I am fine with it, especially if it is something like Quidditch with leaderboards you can play with friends. What I would not want is for that to interrupt the single player driven experience, and I do not think WB would mandate that after Avalanche already delivered the best selling result of 2023 without any live service elements.
What I want to see in the sequel
My wish list is pretty short. I want the Room of Requirement expanded into something with actual gameplay purpose. I want the morality system I have talked about repeatedly. I want Quidditch in the core game now that Quidditch Champions has come and gone, along with Wizard's Chess and Gobstones at bare minimum. I also want the ending choice from the first game, where you either keep or release a certain object, expanded so that choices matter throughout the entire experience rather than being decided mostly at the end. As I put it, it is Hogwarts Legacy, so it should be our legacy, not a predetermined one.
When a reveal could realistically happen and what release window makes sense
September 1st falls on a Tuesday this year and is also the date of the Back to Hogwarts event, which will be streaming and mainly focused on the HBO series. Getting a teaser for Hogwarts Legacy 2 at that event would surprise me in a good way. September also usually brings a PlayStation State of Play, so it is possible the Back to Hogwarts event covers the HBO series while a State of Play later that month reveals Hogwarts Legacy 2 instead.
Multiple insiders have said the game should be getting revealed soon, and JB Perrette's comment about the real fruits arriving in 2027 or 2028 lines up with that. If a reveal does happen this year, I think late 2027 is possible at the absolute earliest. Given that Hogwarts Legacy 1 ended up delayed from its original window, an early 2028 release also makes sense if the sequel slips the same way the first game did.
What do you want to see in Hogwarts Legacy 2, and do you think it gets revealed before the end of this year?
