Why the Theory That GTA 6's Jason Is Arthur Morgan's Descendant Falls Apart

A viral Red Dead and GTA comparison claims Jason shares a bloodline with Arthur Morgan. Here is where it started and why the story does not quite add up.

A theory has been spreading across Red Dead and GTA corners of Reddit and TikTok claiming that Jason from GTA 6 might actually be related to Arthur Morgan. I have replayed Red Dead Redemption 2 four times, I am on my fifth playthrough right now, and I still cannot bring myself to play Arthur as anything other than a good man, so when this theory started showing up on my feed I went digging into it.

I want to be upfront about where I land on it before going through the details: I do not think the evidence is there yet. The resemblance is uncanny and the timeline does technically work, but once you look closer at what Rockstar has actually confirmed about Arthur's family, the theory gets a lot harder to hold together.

The theory started after Rockstar's newest GTA 6 trailer and screenshots

Rockstar dropped another GTA 6 trailer along with a batch of new screenshots, and fans immediately started pulling every frame apart looking for hidden details. That is when the Arthur Morgan comparison started gathering momentum. Normally I would ignore this kind of thing, because half the time these theories are built on blurry screenshots and one Reddit post from the middle of the night. But this one caught my attention because Red Dead Redemption 2 is genuinely my favourite game ever, and I do not think I have ever cared about a fictional character the way I care about Arthur Morgan.

The theory is not actually new. It started months earlier on Reddit, and the original post even admitted it was probably a bit far fetched, floating the idea that Arthur Morgan could be Jason's great grandfather, or maybe even his great great grandfather. It was never presented as a solved mystery, more of a "this is probably nonsense, but hear me out." It got a few people chatting and then faded until someone repackaged it for TikTok. Nothing about the theory actually changed in that time. Nobody found a new document or a hidden developer interview. Someone just put Arthur and Jason side by side with dramatic music, and suddenly millions of people, including me, were staring at their phones convinced they were seeing something.

The resemblance and the timeline make the theory feel plausible on paper

There are really only two things you need to believe for about 30 seconds before your brain starts joining the dots. The first is the resemblance. Forget family trees for a second: Jason genuinely does look a little like Arthur. It is not just that they both have beards, it is the shape of the face, the jawline, the nose, the eyes, even the hairstyle. Both have that permanently weathered look of someone who has had an unnecessarily difficult life. The first time I saw the comparison I leaned into my phone squinting at a screenshot like I was suddenly qualified to work in forensic facial recognition.

Then there is the timeline. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in 1899, and GTA 6 is set in the present day, which is well over 120 years apart, plenty of time for four or maybe even five generations. Purely on paper it does not sound ridiculous: two characters who resemble each other, enough time for a family line to exist, and a studio with a reputation for hiding tiny details fans do not notice for years. If you are a lifelong Rockstar fan, your brain almost wants it to be true, because we have been trained to look for hidden references and clever connections.

Arthur's son Isaac is the detail that undermines the theory

Someone reminded me of a smaller conversation in the game that changed how I looked at the whole thing. Arthur talks about a woman called Eliza, a waitress, and together they had a little boy called Isaac. Arthur was not father of the year, he never lived with them, but he visited when he could and tried to make sure they were looked after. Then one day he turned up and both of them had been killed over a handful of dollars. The first time I heard Arthur tell that story it hit me hard, not because Rockstar built some huge cinematic cutscene around it but because Arthur tells it almost matter of fact, like he has carried that weight for so long he no longer knows how to be emotional about it.

That moment explains who Arthur really is, why he is patient with strangers, why he helps people, why underneath the outlaw bravado he is a broken man trying to leave the world a bit better than he found it. It is also the moment the theory starts falling apart, because Isaac is the only child Rockstar has ever confirmed Arthur had. No other son, no daughter, no secret family. If Isaac dies as a child and Rockstar has never suggested Arthur had any other children, the obvious question becomes where Jason is supposed to come from.

The counterarguments boil down to "Rockstar could," not actual evidence

The internet was not about to give this up that easily. I have seen people argue Jason does not need to be Arthur's direct descendant at all, that he could come from another branch of the Morgan family, cousins or relatives we have never met. I have also seen theories suggesting Rockstar could simply reveal Arthur had another child nobody knew about. Could Rockstar do either of those things? Of course, it is their universe and they can write whatever story they want.

But this is where I think fans get a little carried away. There is a difference between something being possible and there being any actual evidence for it. Right now both of those ideas boil down to "they just could," which respectfully is not evidence, even if it is fun to think about. That is us wanting it to be true, and believe me, I get it. Sometimes the simplest answer is still the right one: Jason might just look a little like Arthur, and because Arthur Morgan is one of the most iconic video game characters ever created, our brains immediately start looking for a deeper connection that might not actually be there.

Rockstar trained its fans to notice everything, and that is why the theory refuses to die

I think this theory became so popular in the first place because it is not really about Arthur or Jason, it is about us. Rockstar has spent the best part of 30 years training its fan base to notice everything, from a weird radio advert to a familiar logo traced back years to one line of dialogue that gets a lengthy breakdown explaining how it changes everything. They have filled their games with recurring brands, jokes, hidden details and environmental storytelling for so long that we have all been conditioned to investigate everything, and honestly I love that about being a fan.

But there is a flip side. Once you train millions of players to look for hidden connections, eventually they start finding connections that probably are not there, and I think that is what has happened here. As far as Rockstar has ever shown us, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are separate worlds. They occasionally throw in a wink or a blink and you will miss it reference for fans, but that is very different from Arthur Morgan's family tree secretly stretching all the way to Vice City. I do not think this theory tells us anything new about Rockstar's universe. What it does tell us is something we already knew, that Rockstar fans are detectives, and Rockstar only has itself to blame for that.

My verdict: I do not buy the bloodline, but I love why the theory exists

Nearly eight years later, Arthur Morgan still is not just another video game character. For me he is the greatest protagonist Rockstar has ever written, and honestly I would go further than that and call him one of the greatest protagonists gaming has ever produced. Not because he is the strongest or the funniest or because he delivers quotable one liners, but because he feels human. He is flawed, he makes awful decisions, he hurts people, he carries more regret than most people could live with, yet he spends the entire game quietly trying to become someone better. That is exactly why I can never bring myself to play him as the villain, no matter how many times I tell myself this playthrough will be the outlaw run.

So do I think Jason is secretly Arthur Morgan's descendant? Probably not. The resemblance is uncanny and the timeline does work on paper, but once you factor in Isaac's story, it becomes difficult to make the family tree fit without inventing parts of the story Rockstar has never told us. There is a difference between evidence and wishful thinking. But do I understand why millions of people desperately want there to be the tiniest thread connecting Arthur to Rockstar's next generation? Absolutely, because I think this was never really about proving a bloodline, it was about Arthur, and about all of us still not being ready to say goodbye to him.

What do you make of the other details people have raised, like the theories around weapon names in GTA 6, do you think there is anything to those?
