Chaos Ranks the 10 Best Guns From the Modern Warfare 4 Beta

After spending some hands-on time in the first beta weekend, here is the current pecking order for weapons, based on my own runs plus what the community is saying on the forums and X.

I think Modern Warfare 4 has a tough road ahead when it launches, and I did not have the highest opinion of the new Modern Warfare series going in. Even so, I always try to give new Call of Duty games a chance when they come around, and I have been playing the beta just a bit. I am not sharing my overall thoughts on the game yet, that is for another piece, but as the person who keeps track of these Call of Duty lists, I felt a responsibility to lay out what I and the community think are the best guns in this first beta weekend.

The level cap is pretty low right now, so there are not that many weapons unlocked yet. This list comes from my own time with the game combined with what I have seen discussed on the forums and on X. You can let me know if you agree or disagree.

10. Type 73 turns into a shredder, but only if you can find a quiet corner

The Type 73 is a belt fed machine gun built around sustained fire. When you actually get set up in a position where you can take advantage of that, I think it shreds people. The problem is that Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer is not exactly giving you a lot of opportunities to sit comfortably behind a sandbag and recreate a documentary about the Korean War. The beta's maps are tight and compact, the time to kill is fast right now, and players are moving around constantly.

That said, once you actually find that secret position you can camp in, it is top tier, and it is also pretty fun and rewarding once you find yourself in one of those situations. I have a feeling that once the full game comes out with more open areas for combat, people are going to see what this gun is really about. Right now it is horrible for running around and sliding everywhere, but it is good for stationary objective play if that is your vibe.

9. Orus 8.6 reminds me of the Outlaw and could be the beta's sleeper hit

The Orus 8.6 is another gun that is extremely good if you are willing to not play like an MLG TTV sweatlord. It is a lightweight marksman rifle that sacrifices constant stopping power for excellent handling speed, and it is heavily reliant on how good your aim is. Honestly, it reminds me of guns like the Outlaw from Black Ops 4 and the MK2 Carbine from Modern Warfare 2019, super light, very difficult to use effectively, but with a ton of potential in the right hands.

I feel like this is one of those guns that is going to have a ridiculous following once the entire community gets their hands on it and really starts experimenting with builds. In a beta, nobody wants to actually experiment because your time is limited, you just want to run around and get as many good games in as you can before the servers shut off. But I am telling you, I think the Orus is going to be the next Outlaw once the full game comes out.

8. Finn LMG is the same reliable staple, and I question why Infinity Ward keeps bringing it back

The Finn LMG is a staple of the new Modern Warfare franchise, returning once again, and you basically know what to expect here. That is exactly why it is good: reliable, simple, and straightforward. It does not make you feel like a slug pushing through molasses while you are holding it. The time to kill is good, the ammo capacity is great, and it is an amazing gun for suppressing fire.

The movement penalty is not slow enough to punish you the way the Type 73 sometimes does. You still have to slow your playstyle a bit when using it, but if you are willing to do that, the Finn is once again a solid LMG. I do not really know why Infinity Ward decided to keep bringing this specific gun back. It is almost like they are trying to force nostalgia in the community for whatever reason.

7. 50GS is basically the Desert Eagle, and I let my feelings pick this one

The 50GS is the Desert Eagle, and it has to have a spot. The new version of the Deagle introduced in Modern Warfare 2019 has basically been a precision weapon, and I really like that about it. It is hard to use, but if you land the shot, it takes at least fifty percent of the target's health away, and if you hit them in the head, you delete them outright. It is a proper hand cannon of a weapon, and I love that, even if it is not always the most practical sidearm to carry.

I will admit I am letting my feelings get in the way of the stats with this one. On one hand I want to be factual, on the other hand I am just trying to have fun with this game and see if these guns land as a mix of what is good and what is fun.

6. Signal 50 heavy sniper is not subtle, but it gets the job done

The Signal 50 heavy sniper is absolutely not subtle, but it will absolutely get the job done. It is tricky up close because it is a sniper, but it still instantly drops whoever it touches, and at longer ranges it can be a real headache for the other team.

I am sure there will be other snipers unlocking in the second beta weekend and in the full game that are more versatile and maybe easier to use, but as of right now the Signal 50 is the go to sniper in Modern Warfare 4. As snipers continue unlocking attachments and players master the movement, I can only imagine it gets even more ridiculous.

5. Resi 12 is a stupid shotgun that is genuinely fun, and it fits the beta's meat grinder maps

The Resi 12 is, genuinely, a stupid shotgun that is really fun to use. It is a classic twelve gauge design built for close range engagements, which is basically perfect for the current beta because several of these maps devolve into absolute meat grinders. The gun takes full advantage of the crazy movement options and encourages you to get right up on people before you blast them into the lobby.

There is also some deceptive range here. Despite being a shotgun designed for close quarters, I have been seeing people get some cheesy kills from longer distances if they are willing to get good with that snappy aim down sights aiming. It is fun. Yes, shotguns are fun.

4. PPSH shoots fast and fills a room, even if I still hate the Apex attachment

The PPSH is good and fun to use, even though I still do not like the white phosphorous style bullets on the Apex attachment for this thing. It shoots fast, holds a big magazine, and basically works like a fire extinguisher, except you are putting out groups of enemies with bullets instead of foam. The crazy fire rate keeps it competitive at mid range because you can pepper people with low damage shots and get relatively quick kills, and up close it deletes them outright.

It is not getting as much attention as certain other SMGs in the game, but it is giving stiff competition. The Apex attachments need to be talked about, in my opinion, but at least the PPSH is getting love in a modern Call of Duty game. This is a legacy weapon and it deserves that love.

3. ISO Nightshade is shaping up as the competitive SMG of choice

The ISO Nightshade is going to be the competitive SMG of choice, at least in my opinion, and I think everybody can see it. It has all the staples of an annoying competitive Call of Duty SMG: it is mobile, it is quick, it has an amazing fire rate and time to kill, and it comes with tons of attachments and ridiculous versatility. You can rush, be stealthy, be slow, or be methodical, and the ISO Nightshade will do whatever you want it to do.

There is no way it does not get nerfed by the time the full game comes out. Then again, maybe it actually stays this way, because this is an Infinity Ward game and they may keep it that way. I honestly do not know.

2. The M4 is once again the jack of all trades, and I am not shocked

The M4 is at the top of a tier list yet again in another modern Infinity Ward game. Shocker, I know. It is basically the rifle version of the ISO Nightshade in the sense that it just does everything: you can rush, tank, sneak, or hold down objectives with it. It is a go to weapon for everything.

I do not know how we keep getting yet another M4 rifle that is arguably too good, but that is the situation. We could be looking at a long season of this gun. Modern Warfare 4 is yet another Modern Warfare game, which apparently means there is yet another M4 that is way too good.

1. Castoff 762 takes the top spot, mostly because I do not want to give it to the M4

My number one pick is the Castoff 762, the big AK style rifle. I still really wish they would just call this thing the AK-47 again, but I can at least appreciate it being arguably better than the M4. I am being honest that I am only giving it the top spot because I do not want to give the top spot to the M4.

While the M4 is probably the best rifle in the game, the AK is probably the most fun rifle in the game. It is definitely the second best gun on paper, but I am putting it first anyway. It makes no sense, I know, but I do not want to give the spot to the M4. Maybe once people have more time with it we can move it up properly, but for now I am giving the Castoff 762 the number one spot, and I think that is fair enough.

This is early, and the beta is going to evolve. Patch notes are already being promised, so this list will not stay the same for long.

Where do you agree or disagree with this early beta gun ranking?
