Modern Warfare 4 matchmaking: is OpTic's 1.27 K/D normal?
After 132 hours to Prestige Master, OpTic finished with a 1.07 win/loss ratio, and I'm wondering what their lobbies were like
How hard is Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer? I mean how hard is it to hold the kill/death ratio you've had in past Call of Duty games. That question keeps coming up while I play, and OpTic Gaming's own numbers have made me wonder even more. OpTic shared a screenshot of their complete stats from their road to Prestige Master. It took them 132 hours straight, and they finished with a 1.27 K/D and a 1.07 win/loss ratio. Something about that isn't sitting right with me.
The accolades here aren't about the fact that they hit Prestige Master. They're about the K/D and the win/loss, because it all makes sense, kind of.
My 1.05 K/D in Modern Warfare 4 and why I'm fixated on it
I shouldn't be so focused on it. It's a game, and I've played Call of Duty for almost two decades. Yet I'm mega focused on my K/D and my win/loss ratio, and I'll be honest, it's pretty toxic. So I'm going to be completely transparent. I'm rocking a 1.05 K/D, and I'm doing everything I can to stay above a one.
My win/loss is bouncing between 1.5 and 1.75. I play mostly by myself. A few friends sometimes join, but we don't communicate on mic or anything. I'm average at best. I'm not saying I'm some cracked Call of Duty player. I probably flirt with getting into that special lobby sometimes, because I lose complete focus. But I'm a 17 or 18 year Call of Duty veteran who has played thousands and thousands of matches.
Modern Warfare 4 matchmaking felt fair for four days, then flipped
In my review, I said that for four days straight my matchmaking in the popular playlist was chill. It was good. There were some hard games and matches that went back and forth, but it was classic feeling Call of Duty. It felt right. You're going to have some hard ones and some easy ones, and it all balances out.
The two days after that, it completely flipped on its head. It's like somebody pushed a button in the back, and it has been sweat, sweat, sweat. I'm having to hyperfocus and do everything I can just to stay above a 1 K/D and try to win the match. Every single match in the popular playlist felt that way, and it didn't matter which mode.
I played TDM, Hijacked and Domination, and it was the same story. Some of those opponents weren't cracked players. They were a full team crouch walking, aiming down sights around every corner, refusing to go to half of the map and never coming out of the back of their spawn, which is wild too.
That brings up another thing: spawns don't flip on almost every match. On the boat map, you can't flip it. I haven't flipped a spawn on that map yet. It's a strange one, but that's a topic for another day.
Why Shipment felt like the most balanced match I played
This is going to sound crazy, but the calmest match I played, the one that felt the most balanced and the most fair, was on Shipment. I'm not joking. I went into Shipment knowing what to expect. It was calm in the sense of calm in the chaos, no pun intended. But it felt normal.
It's classic COD 4 Shipment, and I had fun. Yes, it's brain rot. Yes, it's crazy. I leveled up some of my guns pretty quickly. But it felt true, if that makes any sense. Then I went back into the popular playlist, and the sweat started all over again.
OpTic Gaming's 1.07 win/loss and 1.27 K/D after 132 hours
So I'm stressing out about my K/D and my win/loss, and then I see OpTic's screenshot online. Their win/loss ratio is 1.07. Their K/D for 132 hours of straight play to Prestige Master is 1.27. That's not far above my 1.05. Am I saying I'm equal to the OpTic legends? Absolutely not.
There are a lot of factors that can come in here. Were they chilling? Were they vibing? Did they care? Were they going through it without really caring? Probably. But everybody is taking this and throwing it in with the skill based matchmaking lobbies. These are some of the best players out there, a group that includes players who are Call of Duty world champions, and they finished at 1.27.
There's an argument to be made that because their win/loss is 1.07, barely positive, they were goofing off, going out to farm kills and pub stomping. If that were the case, that K/D would be way higher. It looks to me like they were sweating and trying to win, and that's what they got with the K/D. I don't know. I didn't see their run myself.
It's definitely making the rounds, and people are talking about it because you'd expect a two, or even higher. I feel like in the past it would always have been two. They would be raking lobbies and destroying everybody. That wasn't the case.
The theory that skill based matchmaking trapped OpTic in sweaty lobbies
I'd like to sit down and talk to them and ask, "Hey, how are your lobbies?" A lot of people are already assuming they were dealing with some major SBMM, and it would make sense. I don't think anybody on that run to Prestige Master isn't really good at Call of Duty. I think we can all agree on that, whether you're a fan of OpTic or not.
The alleged hypothetical theory is that they got ranked up very quickly. The algorithm probably saw them pop in and do really well, then embedded them in an SBMM rotation where they had to grind and grind and grind. I'm sure they're probably putting out interviews or clips to either corroborate that or say it's not the case, and we'll find out.
The vibe I'm getting is that they had to grind to Prestige Master in a way where they barely had a win/loss ratio above one, with a 1.27 K/D. That doesn't add up to me. There's something underneath the line there. And if you're trying to reach Prestige Master as quickly as you can, you're chasing as many kills, scorestreaks, killstreaks and objective caps as you can, because that all compounds into leveling up.
How the matchmaking pressure pushes me into a toxic mindset
So I go back to my 1.05 K/D and think, I know I'm old. I know I'm washed. I know I have moments where I lose it. But I also have moments where I lock in and do well. I'll go 35 and five and have a really good match that's entertaining. And then I have matches where I can't win a gunfight to save my life.
That's when I turn into a COD baby and revert to a five year old, complaining that the hit reg is bad and my bullets aren't killing. I get irritable and toxic, and I don't want that. I'm old enough now that I want to enjoy my gaming time with my community and have fun. It funnels you into that toxic mentality almost instantly when that SBMM hits, or when you feel like you're being put into those matchmaking situations.
Then I look at OpTic doing a 1.27, and my win/loss ratio is higher than theirs. Is that proof that I'm better? Absolutely not. But it makes you wonder about the story behind the story with that 1.07 and that 1.27. I try to win and play the objective, and I'm doing pretty well at it, I guess. Meanwhile, I'm dog paddling as hard as I can to stay above water and keep a positive K/D.
I don't have the argument that I'm really good and can prove it. I'm an average Call of Duty player, but one capable of a four, five, six or seven K/D if the match pops off and I work the map and play to my style. Now that I saw this from OpTic, it throws all these thoughts in my head that it's not a conspiracy, that it's not just me. Then again, we don't know the story behind it.
Is Modern Warfare 4 harder than past Call of Duty games for returning players?
My own case is a little gray, because I'm coming back after years of not playing Call of Duty. I'm dusting off a lot of cobwebs. But it's like riding a bike. Once you get going and get in the groove, you remember everything, and it feels pretty familiar.
What I want to hear from people who played Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare 3 and Modern Warfare 2 is whether Modern Warfare 4 is a struggle or whether they're cruising. Are you popping a 2.5 K/D, or does it feel hard to get where you've been in the past, even though your skill hasn't changed? If you've played Call of Duty for years, I trust your opinion, because you have the same feel I do. You know when something changes, whether or not it turns out to be placebo.
OpTic, 1.27 K/D, world champions. I don't know where to go with it, but something isn't sitting right with me.
