Hayden Christensen's Podcast Comments Could Be Pitching Disney a Live-Action Clone Wars Series
The prequel star name-dropped Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson while talking about the Clone Wars era, and I don't know how Disney can look at this idea and not at least consider it.
Hayden Christensen may have just handed Disney the blueprint for its next big Star Wars series without anyone actually greenlighting a thing. On a podcast appearance, he was asked about the possibility of an Anakin Skywalker series and started talking about how much he enjoyed finally playing the Clone Wars version of Anakin in live action, then began listing who might be willing to come back with him.
Hayden Christensen Name-Drops Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson
Christensen said he knows Ewan McGregor would love to do more, and I agree with that read. He said he has heard Natalie Portman would love to come back, and then he brought up Samuel L. Jackson before suggesting they could basically get the band back together. I do not know if he has actually spoken to Jackson or Portman about it, but as I put it, "Has he talked to Sam? Has he talked to Natalie? I don't know, but it doesn't matter because now it's out there."
I want to be clear that this was not an announcement. Disney has not greenlit a live-action Clone Wars series, and there is no indication that all four actors have signed anything or that a project is secretly heading into production. This was Hayden talking about what he would like to do and who he believes may be interested. But sometimes the obvious idea is obvious for a reason, and this one has almost everything Disney has been chasing in its recent Star Wars projects: recognizable characters, actors people genuinely want to see again, and a period of the timeline that has already produced some of the best storytelling the franchise has ever given us.
Why the Gap Between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith Matters
This would give Hayden the chance he never really got in the prequel movies to fully play Anakin as a heroic Jedi before everything falls apart. In the prequel trilogy, we do not actually spend much time with Anakin and Obi-Wan operating as the legendary team we are told they were. Attack of the Clones begins the war, and Revenge of the Sith picks up at its conclusion. In between those two films sits almost an entire relationship that makes Anakin's fall hurt as much as it does.
The animated Clone Wars series filled that gap in the best way possible, but Hayden and Ewan never got to perform most of it themselves. That is exactly why Hayden's appearance in Ahsoka worked so well. We finally saw him wearing a version of the Clone Wars armor, leading troops, interacting with a younger Ahsoka during the war. It only lasted for a small portion of an episode, but it immediately showed what was possible. He was not playing the angry young man from Attack of the Clones or the broken Revenge of the Sith Anakin. He was playing General Anakin Skywalker, confident and protective, and it felt like the missing version of the character finally showing up in live action.
What Ahsoka Season 2 Reportedly Has in Store
Ahsoka's second season appears ready to give us more of that. The first trailer reportedly includes Hayden returning as both a Force ghost and through more Clone Wars era flashbacks. As I see it, if it is not broken, do not fix it, and that should give Lucasfilm another opportunity to test the reaction. I do not think a few flashbacks should be the end of it. If Hayden, Ewan, Natalie or Sam are interested, there is plenty of material for a focused limited series that actually adds something to the prequel story, and it does not need to run seven seasons. Three or four would be enough.
Why This Should Not Just Remake the Animated Series
The immediate concern is that the animated Clone Wars already exists. Seven seasons covered an enormous amount of the conflict and developed Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, the clones, Maul and countless other characters in ways the movies never had time for. I do not want Disney simply remaking animated episodes shot for shot because live action supposedly makes them more important. The animated series does not need to be replaced, and Matt Lanter's version of Anakin should not be treated as some temporary substitute now that Hayden is back.
The answer is to find stories the animated series did not explore. The Clone Wars lasted for years and stretched across the entire galaxy, so there are gaps, unproduced arcs and missions that could support a new story without rewriting what came before. Lucasfilm could build a series around one major campaign involving Anakin and Obi-Wan, then connect that mission to Padme's work in the Senate or Mace Windu's growing concern about the direction of the Jedi Order. That would give every returning actor a reason to be there, rather than stringing together a handful of cameo episodes.
Natalie Portman's Padme Could Get Her Political Story Back
Natalie Portman's potential return may be the most interesting part of Hayden's comment. Padme was one of the central characters of the prequels, but Revenge of the Sith reduced too much of her story to worrying about Anakin, and several of her political scenes were cut. The animated Clone Wars gave her more agency and reminded us she was one of the most important political voices fighting against Palpatine's agenda. A new series could restore that, showing Padme realizing the Republic is slowly becoming the thing it claims to be fighting, uncovering connections and manipulation along the way.
Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu Fits Better in the Clone Wars Than After Revenge of the Sith
Samuel L. Jackson has said for years that Mace survived, and a lot of people want to see him return after Revenge of the Sith. But the Clone Wars era is a cleaner option because it does not require any explaining or retconning of how he survived being electrocuted, thrown from a window and disappearing during the fall of the Jedi. We could simply bring Mace back during a time when he was one of the Order's most important leaders, and the series could deepen the conflict between Mace and Anakin. Mace has often been blamed for pushing Anakin away, but from his perspective Anakin was powerful and emotionally unstable, and that is worth revisiting.
Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Is the Easiest Case to Make
Ewan McGregor has never hidden how badly he wants to keep playing Obi-Wan. He recently said Disney does not appear ready to continue his story, even though he believes there is plenty to explore between the ending of Obi-Wan Kenobi and A New Hope. A Clone Wars project would hit differently because the chemistry between Hayden and Ewan is the heart of the whole thing.
The Technical and Structural Challenge of Aging Back the Cast
The biggest challenge would be making the actors convincingly appear as they did between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Hayden and Ewan can still play the characters, but Disney would probably need some combination of makeup, digital de-aging and lighting. Technology has improved enough that I am sure they could figure it out. My preference would be giving it the scale of a movie but structuring it as six to eight episodes in a limited series, picking one campaign with a clear beginning and ending instead of stretching a small story across a full season. Keeping Dave Filoni involved makes sense since he understands this period and these characters, but I would also bring in writers willing to challenge them and build a story that stands on its own.
The Counter-Argument That Star Wars Needs to Move Forward
There is also the argument that Star Wars needs to move forward instead of constantly returning to the same era, and I get that too. There is no way out of the Skywalker timeline, and Disney is already deep into this era with Ahsoka, Obi-Wan and other projects. But if they are going to keep doing it, this is one of the few ideas that has real emotional purpose and weight. Hayden's return has become one of the best redemption stories out there, going from years of criticism over the prequels to finally getting the appreciation he should have had all along. The cast appears ready according to Hayden, the audience would show up, and there is a story worth telling.
Would you want a full live-action Clone Wars series with Hayden, Ewan and the rest of the cast, or is it better left alone? And if it happens, should it tell a completely new story or adapt one of the best arcs from the animated series?
