Then a pattern caught our attention. It started with, "You know, they keep laying hands on each other," and the answer came straight back: "That's like red flaggy." We both said, "It's toxic," and the next thought was, "It's not a good sign." It was possible we just hadn't been seeing much of that because we'd only seen the flowery, loving side of the relationship. Through all of it, the friend who stays by his side won us over. The praise was simple: "He's such a good friend," and later, "He's such a real one, dude." The response: "Yeah, he takes good care of him. He really does."
