Ramayana IMAX gift box: what's inside the gold Diwali package?
A gold Diwali themed package for Ramayana in IMAX 3D came with a bookmark, an abridged edition of the Indian epic, Fandango codes and a royal summons from Prince Rama
IMAX sent us a gift box for Ramayana, and we opened it together. It's gold, it's elegant, and it's built around the Diwali season, which felt fitting for this time of year. We think it's a lovely package, and it left us excited about seeing Ramayana in IMAX 3D.
The Ramayana IMAX box: a box inside a box
The plain outer carton gave nothing away. Inside was another box, and inside that was the real gift: a shiny gold box with a tassel and a Happy Diwali greeting. It's a beautiful object on its own, and we thanked IMAX for it.
The gold theme stood out to us. It reminded us of light, and of the triumph of light over darkness that Diwali celebrates. The paper inside was high quality, which you can't feel from a description but which we noticed straight away.
A bookmark and an abridged Ramayana
The first item was a bookmark, ideal for all the reading we've been doing. It turned out to match the next item: Ramayana, described as a modern, abridged prose version of the Indian epic. Abridged or not, it's still a hefty book.
We plan to read it one after the other and talk it over, book club style. The book was a welcome inclusion, because Ramayana was watched on our side with no knowledge of the original writings. Going in blind kept everything a surprise. Now the book is a way to go back and learn the details.
Fandango codes, a compass and a diya
A note from IMAX on papyrus style paper came with Fandango promo codes for IMAX auditoriums, good for any film. Someone clearly has to go and see Ramayana in IMAX.
Next was what looked like a pocket watch but was a compass, so you can always find Sita. Neither of us knows how to use a compass, but it's a nice touch. The last piece was a diya, a candle holder for Diwali. We already had a few from earlier gifts, so this grows our collection.
A summons from Prince Rama to the kingdom of Ayodhya
A scroll addressed the reader as a brave warrior. Prince Rama requests your presence as he sets out on an epic journey to find his beloved Sita and face the wicked, immortal king Ravana, on a mission written by destiny. The gifts were sent to guide and strengthen you, and the adventure was set to begin on November 5. It was signed from the kingdom of Ayodhya.
November 5 happened to be the day we opened the box.
Seeing Ramayana in 3D, and an Ayutthaya connection
Ramayana has already been seen on our side, in 3D rather than IMAX, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. It was enjoyed a lot, and the 3D was used very well. Everything we've heard about it is great, and we think anyone going should try IMAX 3D.
There's a fun link to Thailand too. The Thai city of Ayutthaya takes its name from Ayodhya in the Ramayana, and Thailand has its own version of the story, the Ramakien. With that in mind, we're wishing everyone a happy Diwali. May the light of this season bring you and your loved ones much happiness and joy, this Diwali and beyond.

More on Ramayana →This trailer sold me, the winged elephant and the villain's throne looked sick and the colors stand out visually. I'm not religious so I'm not bothered by the split reception in India, though I get why people there want the story treated with respect, and I'm still excited.

We both loved Godzilla Minus Zero as a bigger, more spectacle driven sequel, best seen in IMAX, even though it leans into melodrama and didn't build quite the same character connection as Minus One. It is a great Godzilla film, cheesy but definitely worth seeing in theaters.

Crunchyroll and Toei Animation set an August 19 North American date, named the full English cast, and released the first dubbed trailer.
