Agatha All Along: Alice's Death and Teen's Scarlet Witch Crown Reveal

The Ouija board trial, Agatha's mother and a crown that looks very familiar left us with a cliffhanger and plenty of questions

In Agatha All Along, Alice's death was gutting, and Teen's reveal, complete with a crown that looks very similar to what Scarlet Witch normally wears, left us trying to work out what the show was setting up. Overall we liked it. It was cool and fun, and it felt like it was over before it started.

Teen's crown points toward Wanda

The crown was the detail that clicked for us. Paired with Agatha telling Teen he's so much like his mother, it seemed to link back to what Rio said in the previous episode, "that boy isn't yours." Earlier on, before the reveal, the idea floated was that the line maybe meant he wasn't her son, though that was just theorizing. By the end, the implication we took was that he could be Wanda's son.

We still weren't sure what to make of it. It raised the question of whether Teen was acting alone or was sent by Scarlet Witch, since someone put the sigil over his mouth, and who did that. The episode also moves through different eras, just like WandaVision did, which makes you wonder if Scarlet Witch has anything to do with what's going on. As discussed on the show, "the show left us in a very weird place," with a great cliffhanger.

Alice's death and the nature versus nurture question

Alice's death was really sad, enough to make the hairs stand up all over, and gutting because she was so likable. Another thought raised was that even Agatha seemed surprised by what happened, or maybe she just got excited to have the power back. The question came down to whether Agatha truly couldn't control herself or whether her nature is evil and she took Alice's power because that's what she does.

We also talked through Jennifer's push to get everyone out with their lives intact. Had they listened, Alice might have stayed alive, but then Agatha would have been left behind, and the exit only opened after Teen figured out the trial was about the spirits. As the rule of the road goes, "you can't cheat the road." You conjured it, so the only way out is to complete the trials.

Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza

Kathryn Hahn did a fantastic job, from pretending to be Mrs. Hart, AKA Sharon, to facing her mother's spirit, hearing her son's spirit and the shift in her face with Teen. Not everyone was as sure, though: her performance in the last 10 minutes landed a lot, but there's often some uncertainty about how to feel about her acting, settling on "there are definitely fleeting moments of Genius from her." The suggestion was that the uncertainty may come from the character wearing so many masks to hide her vulnerability.

On Aubrey Plaza, it's enjoyable that she seems to be having fun, as is her character. It's also easy to see why she was cast, since her character never takes any situation seriously.

A fun ride, but maybe not a rewatch

On the brooms, they really need a saddle so the guys have somewhere to put their feet. The era costumes suited the Halloween season, and the show straddles scary, exciting and funny. Still, "it definitely feels like a one-time watch for me," unlike Loki, particularly season 2, and Andor, though the plan is to wait and see by the end of the season.

Do you think Teen was acting alone, or was someone else behind him?
