Agatha All Along Episode 3 Brings a Surprise Death and a Setup I Found Predictable
The first trial on the Witches' Road ends with Sharon gone, and my verdict on the show held steady after three episodes
Episode three of Agatha All Along sent the coven into its first trial on the Witches' Road, and it ended with a death neither of us expected: the woman they keep calling Mrs. Hart didn't make it. My wife and I sat down for this one together, as we did for the first two, and our takes on the show stayed about where they were.
Mrs. Hart's death came out of nowhere for us
Early on, we went back and forth about Mrs. Hart. One guess was that she'd surprise the group with some kind of hidden quality, the other that she'd be an annoying tagalong and comic relief. When the coven made it out of the beach house and learned Sharon was dead, the response in the room was "I didn't see that coming." We also noticed she only gets called Mrs. Hart because that was her name in WandaVision.
I kind of hope the teen isn't Agatha's son
The episode reminds us that Agatha traded her own child for the Book of the Damned, and it shows his room, where he had drawings and stuff. We talked about whether Teen is that son and whether she would even recognize him. My wife thought it seemed too obvious, and I'm with her: I kind of hope the kid isn't her son, because the way they set it up was really predictable.
The beach house trial
The house itself was compared to a Desperate Housewives set, and the poisoned wine trial got plenty of comment, from the swollen faces to the antidote that needed a corpse decaying for millions of years, which turned out to mean a petroleum product. Teen's sous vide idea also earned a line about him being the kind of kid you want around.
My verdict after three episodes
My wife thought it was good and picking up speed, and said "it's light enough but interesting." She doesn't like things that are really dark, and while there were dark moments, she felt it wasn't too much, and it stays comedic.
I stick with what I said going in and after the first two episodes: "I think it is a well written show, I think it's a well directed show." But I think that if I weren't covering this show, I wouldn't be following it; I'd see an episode or two and that's it. That said, I'm not tuning out. I think Kathryn Hahn is awesome, and the whole crew is too, but "she really carries it though," and I think it's geared more toward a female audience. It seems like each episode is going to be a trial.
One more thing: you don't have to have seen the other Marvel projects to follow this. Her character comes from the Wanda story, but it carries itself, and it came up between us as something to enjoy for Halloween, a fun witch show to pass the time.
Did the twist with Sharon catch you off guard too?
