Avengers: Doomsday Ending Theory: How Doctor Doom's Story Could Echo The Kang Dynasty Plan
Reports that the ending was unsettled during production, a set image, a clip from the TVA and Fantastic Four reports all hinted at where Doom's story might go
Apparently, the ending of Avengers: Doomsday was up in the air at the time I wrote this, as in they didn't know how the movie ends, even though they were already deep into production without a completed script. I wasn't freaking out, though, and I think I do kind of already know how this film is going to end: the only way it really could, the same way it was going to end when it was still Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Beyond the ending, there was plenty to dig into: the first official set image from the film, a leaked clip from set with big implications for the plot, a reported Doctor Doom tease in The Fantastic Four: First Steps that may give us an idea of who this Robert Downey Jr. version of Doom really is, and reports on the incursions between realities, all setting the stage for Secret Wars.
Doomsday Started Filming Without A Locked Ending, And I Understood Why
Marvel is notorious for starting filming on projects before the script is done, and that frustrates me enormously. In a perfect world, they would have the script locked down and perfect before they start filming. James Gunn has said that is a strict rule over at DC Studios: nothing starts rolling until the script is finalized.
Still, I know Marvel has a very big schedule to keep, and they had already been in a really tough spot, having to move a bunch of different things around with The Kang Dynasty becoming Doomsday. I was glad to hear that they were delaying Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, because that told me they have a plan, they want that plan executed correctly, and they realized they needed more time to do it.
So while I do wish they hadn't started filming before the script was locked, I understand that with a movie like this, and the scheduling nightmare of bringing all of these characters together, sometimes you really don't have a choice. Sure, they could have delayed filming by a month or two, but that could have meant delaying even more, maybe even by a year or more, before they could get everyone locked back down together. This cast is gigantic, and these are big actors with busy schedules. Go too far off schedule and a lot of your cast is often already contracted to be on sets for other films. I wasn't thrilled the ending wasn't locked, but I was confident they were at least trying to make it right.
My Prediction: The Multiverse Collapses Into Battleworld And Gets Rebuilt
I mean, we all know how the movie is going to end, right? The multiverse is going to collapse. Everyone lands in something like the void, which will serve as Battleworld like in the comics. We'll see team Doom fight team good guys.
Then Wanda, Franklin Richards and Loki will use their reality manipulation powers to rebuild the multiverse. Boom. I just wrote the ending.
The First Set Image And A Clip From The TVA's Loom Room
Speaking of the multiverse collapsing, the first set image showed the Thing, Falcon and John Walker all together. That's members of three different teams: the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers and Sam Wilson's Avengers.
Even bigger was a clip from set shot by none other than Thor's stunt double. If you look at the floor, they are in the TVA. And not just the TVA: they are in the loom room, the entryway to the place that used to hold the multiversal temporal loom from the Loki series. That loom is what He Who Remains used to maintain the sacred timeline, and this is the same entryway Loki went through before destroying the loom and taking his throne at the end of time.
I was getting chills thinking about the implications of the Avengers going to the TVA, to this room, and to Loki. The question becomes what they are there to do. Are they there to warn him about Doom? Are they trying to beat Doom to Loki so they can protect him? And if Thor's stunt double is there, then that means Thor is there, and we are going to get that Thor and Loki reunion.
Nightcrawler Punching Pedro Pascal Points To Reed Richards Searching For Franklin
Reports at the time indicated that the incursions would be discovered as happening not only between Universe 616 and the X-Men universe, but other realities as well. At that point, the actor who plays Nightcrawler had also said he'd filmed a scene where he was told he was punching Pedro Pascal.
A big part of this movie will of course be the Avengers versus X-Men angle, before they decide to band together to save the multiverse and stop Doom. With Nightcrawler punching Reed, that means Reed Richards likely makes his way over to the X-Men universe looking for his son, Franklin, whom Doom was reported to have kidnapped in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
It was reported that the scene features Sue reading to Franklin. She turns her back for a moment, and when she turns back around she sees Doctor Doom there with Franklin. It's looking like he will then portal away with the baby, likely because he wants to use Franklin's powers to help control the multiverse. In the comics, Franklin can create entire universes and bend and twist reality to his will, so that's something Doom is going to want to take advantage of.
Latveria's Empty Chair In The Fantastic Four Could Define Robert Downey Jr.'s Doom
The report I saw was that in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, world leaders meet, kind of like the United Nations, to discuss how to handle Galactus. We see an empty chair with a place card that reads Latveria, and that empty chair belongs to Latveria's leader, Victor Von Doom, very likely Robert Downey Jr.'s Victor Von Doom.
If this is true, it has pretty big implications for what kind of Doom we are getting. It would confirm a very comic accurate Victor Von Doom, with the added factor of him being a variant of Tony Stark, likely never adopted by the Starks in this universe, unlike in the mainline MCU. Instead he stayed with his birth mother, grew up in Latveria, moved to the States, became a rival of Reed Richards in college, and then became the notorious supervillain Doctor Doom.
I think we can safely say the reason he is likely missing from his chair is that he is off traveling the multiverse with his own plan to save it, likely viewing Galactus as a cosmic hiccup next to an even grander problem: a collapsing multiverse.
The Chair May Tie Back To Universe 838's Illuminati
An empty chair meant for Robert Downey Jr. would also tie to the empty chair in Universe 838 from Multiverse of Madness, where the Illuminati lineup had an empty chair that likely belonged to Iron Man, or maybe even Doctor Doom. We got those Ultron bots, which are a lot like Doom bots, and we can assume they belonged to either Tony or Victor in that universe.
We could then retroactively learn that Robert Downey Jr.'s character there, whether Tony or Doom, was also away handling what he foresaw as a bigger threat than the hiccup of the Scarlet Witch.
A Council Of Dooms Could Recycle The Kang Dynasty Plot
What would be really cool is if the rumors are true that Robert Downey Jr. is playing several versions of Doom and Tony Stark, and we see them all meeting as a council of Dooms or Starks or whatever they call themselves, just like the Council of Kangs in Quantumania and the Council of Reeds in the comics. It would be great to learn that when Tony created time travel, setting Loki on his course to break the sacred timeline and create the multiverse, he ended up creating countless versions of himself, Dooms and Starks, with a multiversal council. In fact, I think that's what they were teasing by having so many Doctor Dooms on stage for the Comic-Con reveal.
Maybe we see a rogue Doom, the primary villain of Doomsday and Secret Wars, elevate to something like God Emperor Doom status and kill his other variants. That was pretty much the rumored plot when this film was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty: Kang the Conqueror becoming Kang Prime, killing his variants, leveling up to the power of the Beyonder in Secret Wars, and ultimately becoming He Who Remains.
So maybe we're going to see a bit of a copy and paste of that plot with Doctor Doom. Perhaps what was going to be the ending of The Kang Dynasty is now the ending of Doomsday, and they were still working out the finer details of how to make that general plotline work for Doom instead of Kang. Those are just my quick thoughts and theories.
Do you think Doomsday's ending will follow the plan once laid out for The Kang Dynasty?
