Thor vs Scarlet Witch: who wins the MCU fight? Wanda, says DanCo
The God of Thunder has Stormbreaker, lightning and near unbreakable durability, but Wanda's telekinesis, telepathy and chaos magic tip the scales
Thor against Scarlet Witch is the biggest test I've put Wanda Maximoff through so far, and as she stood after WandaVision, I give the win to the Scarlet Witch. She had already held her own in my matchups against Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Jean Grey and Wonder Woman. Thor, the God of Thunder, was a different kind of opponent.
WandaVision (2021), the series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, had wrapped up, and with it we had a clearer sense of how powerful Wanda really is. To judge this fight fairly, though, I had to start with the god in it. And no, I don't mean Wanda, even if she is close to godlike. I mean Thor.
Thor can back up his claim to be the strongest Avenger
For starters, Thor goes around calling himself the strongest Avenger, and the thing is, he can back it up. He has overpowered Iron Man and Loki, and he has even overpowered and stopped the Hulk. On top of that, he sent the Hulk flying with one good swing of a makeshift giant hammer. All of that happened before his awakening, before he went into full god mode.
After that, he restarted the forge at Nidavellir, one of the nine realms. It's an entire array of rings and machines surrounding a dying star. We don't have an exact size, but when you hear Nidavellir, think big. Thor goes in there and restarts it with his bare hands, breaking the ice by pushing as hard as he can. Granted, he had help from Rocket and his little spaceship, but that was mostly Thor.
Then in Endgame, Thor held his own against Thanos in a grappling match for Stormbreaker, all while Thor was on his back and Thanos stood over him, leaning in. I love this moment. Usually when someone gets you pinned in a position like that, they've got you. Just ask John Wick. But not Thor. He survived and held Thanos off, which is impressive and shows how strong he is.
Thor's durability: a beating has never knocked him out
Thor is as tough as he is strong, and he knows how to take a beating. He was at the center of both the Rainbow Bridge explosion and the explosion of Sokovia. He even took a point blank blast to the head from the Power Stone. He's been smacked around by Iron Man, Ultron, Kurse and, most of all, the Hulk. Hulk loves punching Thor, yet Thor took a punch from him in The Avengers and smiled.
Hulk has beaten Thor so badly that Thor began to see his dead father. Yet in all those cases, Thor was never knocked out. Sometimes he went on to technically win, as with Hulk, and other times he just kept trading blows, as with Ultron. He was pummeled by Thanos in a beating similar to the one Hulk took, if not worse, and he still wasn't knocked out. He kept fighting.
Then I have to circle back to the forge. Thor survived the heat, force and power of a neutron star for almost a full minute. In my opinion, nothing anyone else has done in the MCU is more impressive than that. Arguably, nothing anyone has done in any comic book movie ever is more impressive.
Stormbreaker and Thor's lightning have taken down Thanos and Leviathans
As if Thor wasn't powerful enough already, he now has Stormbreaker, which is Mjolnir 2.0, the hammer's bigger cousin. Stormbreaker overpowered a blast from the Infinity Gauntlet and hit Thanos right in the chest, nearly killing him. Later, it did kill Thanos.
Then there's his lightning. It took down multiple Leviathans at once, while JARVIS told Tony that the Iron Man suit would run out of power before it even pierced the hide. Thor's lightning helped melt Ultron's vibranium body. He summoned a lightning blast about the size of a mountain, and he knocked Thanos back with a lightning blast too. To sum it all up, Thor is a god, and he is about as powerful as you'd imagine a god would be.
Scarlet Witch's telekinesis has broken through vibranium and stopped Thanos
So what about Wanda? There are three aspects of the Scarlet Witch's powers to talk about here: her telekinesis, her telepathy and her chaos magic. Starting with telekinesis, what she's doing is wild. As things stood, there were two people in the MCU who had broken through vibranium: Thanos and Scarlet Witch. When Vision cut down that control tower in Civil War, she was there to pick it back up again.
She launched a pile of cars on top of Iron Man, sent Vision plummeting down into the earth and threw massive boulders at Thanos. She even blocked a downward strike from Thanos and his sword, with Thanos putting all his weight and power behind it. That same kind of strike was powerful enough to break apart Captain America's shield, yet Wanda held it back with one hand.
Compare that to when Thanos had Thor on the ropes. Both times, Thanos was pushing down with all his weight, but it was Wanda who was able to overpower him in that moment, not Thor. On top of that, she pushed back against a Leviathan, the same thing the Hulk did. She stopped an oncoming wave of Thanos's forces, held them up in the air and sent them crashing to the ground, taking out much of his army. She even lifted Thanos into the air and squeezed down on him, forcing him to order an airstrike on his own troops just to escape her.
Wanda's telepathy took out the Avengers, including Thor, and controlled Westview
Telekinesis is only one aspect of the Scarlet Witch's powers. Wanda is also a powerful telepath. In Age of Ultron, she took out every Avenger by playing mind games with them. Well, every Avenger except Hawkeye, which once again proves that Hawkeye is the best Avenger out there, and I'll stand by that one. They never lost a fight when Hawkeye was there. The one time they lost and let Thanos kill half the universe, surprise, surprise, Clint wasn't there.
She has also used her telepathy to control everyone in Sokovia and everyone in Westview, for who knows how long. It was days at least, and it could have been weeks or even months. I really don't know. She had so much control over their minds that they did whatever she wanted, even when it hurt them, and they couldn't access their own memories or remember who they were. As Age of Ultron showed, she did this to Thor, so he's not immune to her attacks.
Chaos magic made Wanda more dangerous after WandaVision
Finally, there's her chaos magic. We hadn't seen much of it in the MCU, and it was definitely not up to the level it reaches in the comics. Still, in the MCU, Wanda used this magic to construct and live in Westview. She was also able to exit the Hex surrounding the town and exist in the real world, and even manipulate and control the Hex at will.
On top of that, it looked like the Scarlet Witch was now practicing her magic, so as powerful as she was, she was only going to get more powerful from there. That's a scary thought. But I wasn't judging a hypothetical Scarlet Witch who has finished training and learned all her new magic. The question was whether she was powerful enough, as she was, to take down Thor.
Why Scarlet Witch beats Thor: versatility over durability
I'm going out on a limb and saying yes, she is. My big worry for Wanda would be her durability. Thor can take her attacks just as Thanos did, but Wanda can't take Thor's attacks to the same extent. Luckily, the Scarlet Witch is surprisingly fast, and she'll be able to block quite a few attacks coming her way.
But I'm putting more stock in her versatility to win her the fight, not her speed. Wanda can attack Thor telepathically and take him out that way, because she's done it in the past. She can attack him telekinetically, and she's done that against more powerful opponents. Her new chaos magic, and all the powers that come with it, are icing on the cake.
I think Thor will get some wins in and won't go out without a fight, and I think this is about as good a fight as you're going to find in the MCU when you put Avenger against Avenger. But Kevin Feige said that Scarlet Witch is the most powerful hero in the MCU, and seeing everything she can do and how much power she's packing, I'm starting to believe him. As things stood, I have to give this one to Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch wins.
