Avengers: Doomsday leaks: Doom, Steve and Thor lead emotion
Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus says Doom, Steve Rogers and Thor lead the emotional story, Namor stays off Doom's team, and Blade talks are still going
There are seven new reports covering Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars and Blade. Several of them bring clarity to some out of left field rumors, including the idea that Gambit and Yelena have a romantic thing going in Avengers: Doomsday and the claim that Sam Wilson doesn't get much time in the movie.
All of this comes from Alex Perez at The Cosmic Circus, who recently did a monthly Q&A where he talked a lot about Avengers: Doomsday. Of course, the movie isn't just about stopping Doom. There are going to be other subplots.
Dr. Doom, Steve Rogers and Thor reportedly lead the emotional story of Avengers: Doomsday
According to Perez, these three will serve as the main emotional leaders in Avengers: Doomsday. I think it's easy to see why Steve and Thor would be the emotional anchors of this movie alongside Doom.
With Doom, we've already been given a monologue from Sue about how he used to have a family and everything was taken away from him. It's not only the family she's talking about. We've heard that much of his land was taken from him in his early life, and in the comics his mother and father die early on as well. It does seem like Marvel and the Russo brothers are going to stick as close to his origin story as they possibly can. They're going to change a few things, it seems, but I don't think anything major. At least I hope not. So that's Doom losing his family: not only his wife and his child, possibly kids, but his parents too.
For Steve Rogers, this comes down to his son. We know he's going to have a son named after Bucky, and it's said that Dr. Doom takes him. The movie is said to be one of the darkest MCU movies ever, and who knows what Doom is going to do with him. Some people think they know. The question is whether Marvel will go that dark, and it seems to be so. It does seem like Doom takes his son and possibly Peggy, Steve's wife, at some point in the movie, so Steve will have big emotional stakes.
For Thor, I think it comes down to Loki. We've heard that more Loki was added in the reshoots, and I hope a big reunion between Loki and Thor is coming. Loki was a big part of what Thor cared about toward the end of Ragnarok and Infinity War, and Thor went through a lot when Loki died, so having him come back in some way is going to be big. Then there's his daughter, Love. There's a big parenthood theme in this movie, and Perez says much of the cast will also have their own standout emotional moments. Think of Ant-Man and his daughter. Any parent and child moments in there are going to be emotional, and we've already seen a bit of that in the trailers.
The X-Mansion battle isn't the finale, and there's reportedly no fake ending
This one is a two parter. The first part I think most people had figured out: the battle at the X-Mansion is not the end battle. It's probably going to land a little before the halfway point of the movie, and it's the first meeting between the X-Men and the groups from Earth-616 and Earth-828, meaning the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
The bigger clarification is that, according to Perez, there will be no misleading ending in the second act, and the film's climax will deliver a clear and conclusive ending. At one point we'd heard a report that Marvel was planning some odd twist where they make you think the movie is over when it isn't.
That was always a strange concept to me. If we know the movie runs 2 hours and 50 minutes, and we're only two hours in when they try to make us feel like it's over, we're going to know there's more to come. Perez says that's not the plan. It's going to be a normal ending where, at the end, we assume Dr. Doom wins and creates Battleworld. It's good to have clarity, because I was always curious how they'd pull off that kind of fake ending without lying about the runtime. It doesn't look like we have to worry about it.
Namor reportedly doesn't join Doom's team in Avengers: Doomsday
Another rumor was that Namor would be part of Dr. Doom's team in Avengers: Doomsday. According to Perez, that doesn't happen in Doomsday.
That said, we know Doom is going to rule Battleworld in Secret Wars, and Namor might be a villain in that movie. He was the villain of Black Panther 2, and he could be a villain or a hero at any point. It's like a flip of a coin. So we'll wait and see about Secret Wars, but in Doomsday it seems he'll be fighting with the good guys. I'm sure he'll still have plenty of conflict with them, but he won't join Doom yet. Possibly in Secret Wars.
Yelena and Gambit reportedly share sarcastic banter, not flirting
The report on Yelena Belova and Gambit was that they'd flirt with each other a lot in Avengers: Doomsday, implying something could maybe happen between them. According to Perez, they do share many scenes together, but it's more sarcastic banter than flirting.
Yelena can be sarcastic, and as we saw in Deadpool and Wolverine, Gambit has quite the mouth on him. So I'm curious to see him interact with her. Who else would Gambit play off as well, besides Deadpool? The comments Deadpool made about Gambit were hilarious, and the things Gambit said were hilarious too.
I'm not sure how much interaction we'll get between Deadpool and Gambit this time. We know Deadpool appears early in the movie, but we haven't heard much about him appearing in any other part of it. Some things about this movie are still secretive, which is great.
Sam Wilson is reportedly in at least three major action sequences as Captain America
There have been rumors that Sam Wilson doesn't get much time in Avengers: Doomsday. With Steve Rogers back, some people were even saying Marvel had to bring Steve back as Captain America because they didn't think Sam could carry the role. That doesn't seem to be the case. Perez says Sam will be in at least three major action sequences.
We've already seen him in the battle at the X-Mansion, which will also be a battle against Dr. Doom and the Sentinels. I'm assuming he's in the final battle, and there are other battles during the movie we don't know about yet. So Sam is a main character. I know there are a ton of characters in this movie, but he's the main character.
Perez also says the movie makes it clear that although Steve Rogers is back, he's only Steve Rogers at this point. He doesn't take the shield back, and he doesn't take the title back. Sam is Captain America. We saw that in the latest footage, where Ant-Man calls Steve Rogers Cap and then looks at Sam. Sam has put together his own Avengers team, and Ant-Man is part of it, so I'm sure Sam feels a little betrayed by Ant-Man calling Steve Captain America.
The Marvels reunion sounds like it's set for Avengers: Secret Wars
This is one many people have been wondering about: the Marvels as a group. According to Perez, the Marvels are supposedly going to reunite soon, but soon doesn't sound like Avengers: Doomsday. It sounds like Secret Wars, with a storyline he says is expected to receive resolution in Avengers: Secret Wars.
So will Captain Marvel return in Doomsday? We haven't heard much about that. Kamala Khan will return. Monica Rambeau is expected, since she should be in the X-Men universe right now. Perhaps the missing piece is Captain Marvel. Whatever that missing piece turns out to be, whether it's her or something else the movie shows us, it sounds like it all comes together in Avengers: Secret Wars. If you've been looking forward to a reunion of those three characters, it sounds like it's going to happen eventually.
Marvel is reportedly still discussing the future of Blade
Last but not least, Perez says Marvel is supposedly still discussing the future of Blade. I think that makes sense. We've heard plenty from Mahershala Ali recently about how Marvel couldn't make the project happen. Kevin Feige said it's one of his biggest failures, and Ali didn't hold back, agreeing it was a failure and saying he changed his whole life and moved his family for it, only for it not to happen.
But according to Perez, Marvel is having discussions right now about Blade, with or without Ali. So it sounds like it's not completely done. I've said this before: just because it didn't work out doesn't mean they can't figure it out, present it to Ali and write a new contract. That could happen. Ali would have to agree to come back, and they might reach a decision where they don't do the Blade movie first, but he's part of Midnight Suns and then does a Blade movie after. That could happen as well. And Blade could appear in Avengers: Doomsday. We'll wait and see.
I know it seems like Ali is bitter, and with everything that happened, he has every right to be. But maybe he still wants to do it at the same time. Bottom line, it seems like it might not be done yet, so maybe we can hold on to a sliver of hope that Mahershala Ali will be Blade and that Blade will be in the MCU soon.
