Ranking Every Green Lantern Corps From Weakest to Strongest
From the forced compassion of the Indigo Tribe to the reality-altering White Lanterns, here is how all nine emotional spectrum corps stack up in a full power ranking.
The Green Lanterns might be the most famous lantern corps, but they are far from the only one. There are actually nine corps across the entire emotional spectrum, nine different emotions powering nine different armies across the universe. I'm ranking all of them from the weakest unit in the galaxy all the way up to the most powerful.
Honorable Mentions: Ultraviolet, Gold, and Gray Before the Main Ranking
The Ultraviolet Corps were created by Scott Snyder and are powered by what's described as the invisible emotional spectrum, not one of the traditional seven emotions. It's the hidden self-destructive darkness underneath all of them. Their rings aren't even physical, they're tattoos branded onto members, and the whole thing runs as a hive mind controlled by Umbrax, a sentient dark sun or the living phantom galaxy. They're an honorable mention because we just haven't seen a ton from them.
The Gold Lantern is a blind 31st century schoolteacher who channels the combined power of the entire emotional spectrum rather than one single emotion. The elders of OA chose him as their standard bearer in a future where the classic corps don't exist anymore. He's got a unique power nobody else has, molecular reconstruction, but he's one guy in a far-off future and we just haven't seen much from him at all.
The Gray Lantern is Carol Ferris's ex fiance, who infused his engagement ring with sorrow after she left him to save Hal. He emits a gray mist that forces sorrow onto others. One guy, one ring, one very sad story.
Number 9: The Indigo Tribe Has the Darkest Origin But the Least Combat Power
The Indigo Tribe has one of the darkest origin stories of any corps on this list. Abin Sur, the Green Lantern who eventually gave Hal his ring, founded it after discovering the indigo light of compassion in a cave. His real reason wasn't just spreading compassion around the universe. He'd seen a prophecy that the Guardians themselves would eventually go mad with power, and he built the tribe as a hidden counterweight to stop that from happening.
His recruitment strategy was to find the universe's worst killers and sadists and forcibly instill compassion in them via the ring. Their leader was the person who killed Abin Sur's own child, redeemed through the ring against her will. That forced compassion, not chosen but imposed, is exactly why they're at the bottom. It is a pretty big vulnerability.
On top of that, they're not a very big corps, and their combat feats are almost entirely support and healing, like helping bring Hal back during the Blackest Night and boosting other corps' power when near their light. Useful in the right situation, but not a frontline fighting force and not really a powerful corps.
Number 8: The Violet Lantern Corps and the Danger of Powers Tied to Love
The Star Sapphires were founded by the Zamarons, the female counterpart to OA's Guardians of the Universe, who split off specifically because they refused to suppress their emotions the way the Guardians do. The most famous member is Carol Ferris, Hal's on off-again love interest, who eventually becomes their queen.
The Violet Lanterns are actually pretty cool because their power set is based around love. They can track loved ones across the cosmos, wrap them in protective shields, and crystallize targets into stasis, once even managing to crystallize an entire planet. They can restore loved ones to life and even mind control based around love.
The problem is that because their power is love, their powers are also directly linked to protecting people they love, which means that every time they use their powers, it's because someone they love is in danger. Hal Jordan gets used as bait just to get Carol involved in fights.
Number 7: The Blue Lanterns Only Reach Their Full Strength Alongside Green Willpower
On paper, the Blue Lanterns look like another support corps, founded by exiled guardians Ganthet and Sayd and led by Saint Walker based on Odym. Their blue light alone is mostly defensive and protective, and alone, it's limited compared to the other corps.
Pair a Blue Lantern with a nearby Green Lantern ring, though, and everything changes. Blue light massively amps up green willpower into a combination described as being able to win any battle, because hope needs will to act on it, and I'd call it the second most powerful combination in the entire emotional spectrum.
Saint Walker defeated several Black Lanterns alone during the Blackest Night event, and not a single Blue Lantern ever turned to black. Their hope held against the deadliest corps, and blue light directly hard counters both red's rage and yellow's fear on contact.
Hope can also be rather fragile. When Blue Lantern Brotherhood lost faith mid-fight, he dropped his ring and fell to his death. "Hope that waivers is hope that fails." That's the trade-off, enormous potential when conditions are right, but also the most dependent on those conditions being right at all times.
Number 6: The Red Lanterns Turn Survivor's Rage Into Corrosive Power
Atrocitus forged the first Red Lantern ring from his own rage and blood after surviving the Manhunter massacre of sector 666, one of only five beings in the entire sector who lived through it. He then killed his fellow survivors to use their blood to create the founding batch of rings.
Accepting a red ring destroys your heart and spoils the host's blood, which they can then vomit out as corrosive plasma. Most Red Lanterns are reduced to near mindless, animalistic beasts consumed by all-consuming rage. Atrocitus and a few others are the only ones who can retain self-control without dimming their rage.
The Red Lanterns slaughtered members of both the Green and Sinestro corps during the Sinestro Corps War, and they captured and crucified Sinestro and Mongul. They're explicitly immune to the Black Lantern's heart-ripping attack because their heart has already been destroyed.
You can actually make an argument that red is stronger than green in a straight-up fight, unrestrained rage simply overpowering willpower, like when Hal's own fury at watching Sinestro kill someone pulled a red ring straight to him without him seeking it out. "Rage that strong doesn't get invited. It just takes."
Number 5: The Yellow Lanterns Bring Sinestro's Discipline to the Fear Spectrum
Sinestro, once seen as the greatest Green Lantern who ever lived, was exiled to the antimatter world of Qward after it was discovered he'd been using his power to rule his home world as a dictator. On Qward he forged the first yellow fear ring and started building his own twisted version of the Green Lanterns.
That means 7,200 rings, different sectors of space to control, a central power battery, a command hierarchy, even a drill sergeant in Arkillo. They accept all of it, answering to Sinestro instead of the Guardians. The Sinestro Corps War is where they really shine, allying with the Anti-Monitor and the Weaponers of Qward to launch an attack that came very close to wiping out the entire Green Lantern Corps and taking OA itself.
It got so bad that the Guardians permanently rewrote the Book of Oa to let Green Lanterns use lethal force. Sinestro didn't stop at attacking OA either, he went after Hal personally and destroyed Coast City a second time just to add insult to injury.
What separates the Sinestro Corps from the Red Lanterns is their structure and discipline. They operate under Sinestro's direct command, the only corps capable of matching the Green Lanterns with tactics and coordination instead of just overwhelming force.
Number 4: The Green Lantern Corps Runs on Essentially Unlimited Willpower
The original, the biggest, the Green Lanterns are the most famous intergalactic police force in all of comics, 7,200 rings patrolling 3,600 sectors of space, all reporting back to the Guardians of the Universe on OA. Their power source is essentially unlimited willpower, meaning that as long as there is will, a Green Lantern's power is unlimited.
That's why Green Lanterns can go from street level beat cop one day all the way up to facing off against universe-shattering threats the next. They've created a sun from nothing, and one Green Lantern even duplicated their own ring outright. Kyle Rayner, powered up as the ultimate Green Lantern, single-handedly overpowered the entire output of the yellow lantern power battery.
The only real weakness is that the ring runs on an exhaustible battery, so it can run low or run out entirely. That's really the only main limitation on this corps.
Number 3: The Orange Lanterns Are One Man Who Fights Like an Army
The Orange Lanterns might have just one true member, but that doesn't mean Larfleeze is any less powerful. He's the sole master of the orange light of avarice, or greed, and his hoarding nature is so absolute he refuses to share the ring with anyone. Instead of making constructs, the orange ring steals the identities of everyone Larfleeze kills, reanimating them as loyal soldiers under his total control. His entire army is built from his murdered victims.
That ring absorbs the constructs and energy of every other ring type, eating Green Lantern constructs and direct energy blasts from the Guardians of the Universe themselves. His constructs have even managed to simultaneously absorb energy from multiple Guardians at once, leaving them unable to fight.
He's been able to fight cosmic level beings that can wipe out universes, and the Guardians of the Universe explicitly said Larfleeze is just as dangerous as Parallax, the same Parallax that is the power source behind the entire Sinestro Corps. He's just one guy, but that one guy is able to battle entire corps all by himself.
Number 2: The Black Lanterns Are Built Around Death Itself and Cannot Be Beaten Alone
The Black Lantern corps isn't really built around an emotion at all, it's built around death itself, led by Nekron, Lord of the Unliving, whose entire purpose is to eliminate all life across the universe by feeding on the emotional light of the living. Their corrupted guardian Scar built a power battery around the corpse of the Anti-Monitor and planted it in the dead space of sector 666. William Hand was resurrected as their first member and physical avatar of death.
Then the Blackest Night happened. They reanimated all the dead across the entire DC universe as weaponized zombies, specifically targeting their past loved ones to make it even worse.
The most important thing about the Black Lanterns is that they cannot be beaten by any single color alone. It always requires multiple lanterns teaming up to take them down, and no single corps is powerful enough to defeat them on its own. They were ultimately beaten when a Green Lantern bonded with the Entity, the embodiment of life, resurrected Black Hand to sever Nekron's tether to the living plane, then resurrected the Anti-Monitor himself, destroying the black central power battery from the inside. It took the literal embodiment of life to stop them.
Number 1: The White Lanterns Sit Above the Entire Emotional Spectrum
White light doesn't sit within the emotional spectrum, it sits above it. It's life itself, the source from which all seven corps emotions originally came from. Kyle Rayner is the most famous wielder, converting his own green ring into a white one after mastering every color of the spectrum simultaneously, something no one else has ever done.
White light brought the dead back to life and changed reality itself when Kyle wielded it. He can reduce an opponent to dust instantly, and Kyle was finally able to defeat Nekron and the entire Black Lantern corps with the white light.
There's a catch though. White Lanterns are largely temporary and very rare, and no one's been able to hold on to it for too long before it moves on to someone else. It's got the highest ceiling and potential out of any of the lanterns, it just doesn't really stick around for long. Either way, the White Lanterns are clearly number one, the most powerful without a doubt.
Where would you rank these nine corps?
