General Grievous brings Dooku's training, four lightsabers and eight Jedi Master kills

General Grievous was trained in lightsaber combat by Count Dooku. That's the same Dooku who stalemated Obi-Wan and Anakin simultaneously and who was personally trained by Darth Sidious himself.

On top of that training, Grievous has four arms, four lightsabers, and cybernetic reflexes that process combat faster than almost any human would. He's killed eight Jedi Masters. He also uses fear and intimidation to disrupt his opponent's connection to the Force, which honestly comes in pretty handy in a lightsaber duel against most opponents. Grievous is just overwhelming.

Qui-Gon Jinn doesn't fight scared, and that's the key

However, Qui-Gon Jinn doesn't intimidate easily, and that's actually the key thing here. Grievous's whole disrupt strategy relies on getting into his opponent's head and making them fight scared.

Qui-Gon went toe-to-toe with Darth Maul and made Darth Sidious himself take note of how dangerous an opponent he was. He doesn't fight scared. He's calm in a way that makes Grievous's psychological pressure "completely irrelevant."

The Force is the variable Grievous can't counter

Both of them were trained by Dooku, but Qui-Gon's Force advantage is really the variable here that Grievous can't counter. He can't use the Force. He can't shut it down. He can only hope his lightsaber speed is going to overwhelm Qui-Gon before the Force gives Qui-Gon Jinn the openings he needs.

Qui-Gon held his own against Darth Maul, who most people put above General Grievous. And Qui-Gon fought long enough and well enough that Sidious even gave him credit. It's a close fight, but ultimately Qui-Gon Jinn is going to win.
