DanCo Breaks Down Why Green Lantern vs Silver Surfer Is Closer Than Anyone Expects
Hal Jordan's willpower and Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic go toe to toe in a matchup that comes down to which force runs deeper
Green Lantern versus Silver Surfer is the kind of fight that writes itself. Hal Jordan is patrolling his sector when Silver Surfer shows up scouting planets for his master Galactus, and you just know the two of them are going to throw down. So who wins? My answer is Silver Surfer, but I do not think this is anywhere close to a one-sided fight, and I want to walk through why.
Hal Jordan Earns the Ring Through Fearlessness, Not Just Skill
Hal Jordan is the first Green Lantern of Sector 2814 and, as I see it, the greatest Green Lantern who has ever lived. That is not just my opinion either. It is the in-universe consensus. The Guardians say it, his enemies say it, and the ring itself said it when it flew past the closest available candidates across an entire country to find a test pilot from Coast City. The ring is not looking for someone tough or smart above all else. It is looking for fearlessness, and nobody has ever been more genuinely fearless than Hal Jordan.
The ring runs entirely on willpower, meaning you can imagine almost anything and the ring builds it in hard light, with the strength of the construct scaling to the strength of your will. Hal outputs more raw willpower than any other Lantern in the universe, to the point that he once built an entire pocket universe inside his own ring using nothing but his will, calling it Will World and describing it as an infinite sea. He has even built his own power ring from willpower alone.
Willpower Turns Green Lantern Into a Planet Level Threat
With that kind of willpower, I think Green Lantern is genuinely more powerful than most people give him credit for, and at his best he should be able to stand toe to toe with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman. The ring lets him build literally anything as a hard light construct, a giant fist, a planet sized barrier, a cage, whatever he can imagine. He has restrained Superman and knocked Clark around, and he one shotted Amazo after Amazo had absorbed the combined strength, speed and powers of the entire Justice League.
Green Lantern has multiple planetary level feats to his name. He has built constructs the literal size of the Earth, helped push the moon back into its proper orbit, and helped stop a planet on a collision course with Earth by shoving it into deep space. He has punched straight through Cyborg Superman after hitting him with a blast described as hot as the sun, and he beat an enemy who was amped on the magnetic force of the entire universe.
His most impressive feat, in my view, is one shotting Krona, a Guardian of the Universe who was wearing rings from all seven Lantern Corps at once and had absorbed the seven emotional entities, the actual source of power behind every ring that has ever existed. To do it, Hal had to override his own ring's hard coded programming against killing a Guardian. His willpower was simply stronger than that rule.
Green Lantern Tanks Nukes and Outraces the Speed Force
Green Lantern can take a hit too. He has tanked a nuclear detonation at point blank range, survived being kicked clean through a planet, and shielded both himself and Superman from a 300 megaton explosion. Nero slammed him into a moon hard enough to shatter it and Cyborg Superman burned half a dozen holes straight through him, and he kept fighting through all of it. When Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Kilowog all fell to a Parallax possessed Ganthet, Hal was the one still standing.
Speed wise, Hal is faster than most people give him credit for. He flies from Earth to the moon in the span of a sentence, passes Mars in under fifteen seconds, and once caught the Reverse Flash after Flash had already blitzed Superman and Wonder Woman in the same moment. Beyond constructs, the ring also grants full matter manipulation down to the molecular level, time travel, the ability to freeze time across a thousand miles, spatial warping, teleportation, healing, intangibility and invisibility.
Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic Makes Him a Walking Cosmic Force
To protect his home world from Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, Norrin Radd struck a bargain to serve Galactus for eternity in exchange for a portion of the Power Cosmic, becoming the Silver Surfer. Every one of his powers traces back to that one source. Iron Man once called it the primary substance of omniscience and omnipresence, described as anything and everything. Surfer is not just using power, he is plugged into the foundation of existence itself.
That gives him ridiculous strength. He has casually overpowered heavy hitters like Thing, Abomination and Rhino, but has also gone toe to toe with Thor, Hulk and Beta Ray Bill, characters who regularly shatter planets. He has thrown moons at Galactus, broken free from entire planets, thrown a spaceship out of the solar system so hard it kept traveling for centuries, and once caught a star.
Silver Surfer Survives the Big Crunch and Regenerates From Nothing
Surfer surfs on supernovas for fun and flies through stars with no issue, tanking blasts from Hulk, Thor, Galactus and Thanos. Planet destroying energy can knock him off his board, but he has survived attacks that wreck entire solar systems, and he lived through the Big Crunch, the opposite of the Big Bang, something Galactus himself admitted he could not survive for long. Thanks to the Power Cosmic he is largely immune to extreme heat, cold, mind control, soul manipulation and even reality warping.
If he does take damage, he does not stay down. He has been sliced apart and healed instantly, reduced to fragments and reformed, and even dispersed into nothingness and still came back, able to exist without a body and reform from thought alone. His regeneration is not just physical, it is existential.
Silver Surfer's Speed Outraces the End of Reality Itself
Surfer's travel speed is essentially immeasurable. He has crossed 500,000 light years in seconds, roughly five Milky Way galaxies before you could blink, and once outraced the destruction of the Never Queen, the embodiment of all possibilities, literally outrunning the collapse of every reality and even beating his own past self in a race against omniversal destruction. His combat speed matches this, moving at light speed with nanosecond reactions, blitzing entire alien fleets before anyone reacts.
His versatility is where the Power Cosmic really breaks the game. His blasts can vaporize planets, he can create shields that absorb almost any energy attack and fire it back stronger, and he once absorbed the Big Crunch itself and weaponized that energy against gods. He can manipulate matter, gravity, souls and minds, travel through time and dimensions, and once revived an entire dead planet, every person, animal and ecosystem. He has fought Thor to a standstill repeatedly, matched Hulk, clashed evenly with Galactus after a planetary meal, and held off the Griever, the embodiment of entropy who ends multiverses, for over sixteen minutes, long enough that she acknowledged and praised him.
Strength and Durability, Green Lantern vs Silver Surfer Side by Side
Both of these characters are no joke, and I think this is one of the hardest fights either of them has ever been in. Surfer has flexed his way out of a planet and thrown a moon at Galactus, and can overpower the Hulk. Green Lantern's constructs pack a real punch too, and he has beaten General Zod under two yellow suns and beaten down Mongol, all while showing he can hold back or, when he chooses not to, punch a jaw clean off.
Both are absurdly tough. Green Lantern once created a planetary shield around the entire Earth that held back a quarter million Kryptonians, and he has survived moon shattering blasts, attacks from Lobo, Black Adam, Cyborg Superman, Superboy Prime, Superman, Wonder Woman and Darkseid, plus a few supernovas along the way. Silver Surfer has taken Hulk's strongest punches without issue, survived blasts from Ego that were destroying planets and moons, tanked a blast from the fully assembled Infinity Gauntlet that was killing Galactus, and lived through the Big Bang, the destruction of one universe and the creation of another, treating it as basically nothing.
Speed Comparison: Power Ring vs Power Cosmic
Green Lantern is genuinely fast. Hal is an ace test pilot who will push himself so hard his constructs nearly fall apart and then go faster still, nearly creating speed force singularities and folding space to cross the universe in moments. He has captured and tied up Zoom moments after Zoom was outspeeding Wonder Woman and making Superman look frozen. But Surfer's speed is on another level, flying faster than light across galaxies and universes in seconds, processing information across billions of stars while traveling faster than light, and outracing the ending of everything.
My Verdict: Silver Surfer Wins the Power Cosmic vs Willpower Showdown
For me, this fight really comes down to the Power Cosmic versus the Power Ring. Hal is the best there has ever been at using his ring, capable of planetary scale constructs, compressing a miniature star, and once shrinking the Earth down to the point where a nucleus was the size of the sun. He has overpowered his own ring's programming to kill Krona, built his own ring from pure willpower, and soloed an entire Lantern Corps by becoming the embodiment of willpower itself against Parallax Sinestro.
But Surfer now carries even more Power Cosmic than before, putting him almost on par with Galactus. He has beaten Beta Ray Bill without mercy, fought Knull, the god of the Symbiotes who can kill Celestials, by casually creating stars and throwing them at him, held off the Griever for sixteen minutes, survived the Big Bang, and once absorbed enough energy to destroy two whole universes. Green Lantern and the power ring is a whole lot, but Silver Surfer and the Power Cosmic is, in my view, just a whole lot more. This is not going to be a one shot for Surfer, and Green Lantern deserves every bit of respect he gets in this matchup, but I have Silver Surfer taking it.
