Captain America vs Predator: Why I Give Cap the Edge in This Fight

Breaking down strength, durability, speed and skill to see who walks away from this one

I think Captain America beats the Predator, and once I break down strength, durability, speed and combat skill side by side, the gap is bigger than people expect.

Captain America went from a scrawny kid to the super soldier who leads the Avengers

Steve Rogers was born in the 1920s and always felt a strong duty toward his country, wanting to help defend people who could not defend themselves. He was too scrawny and weak to even enlist in the army for World War II. Because of that desire to serve, he was selected for the super soldier project and transformed into the pinnacle of human potential.

As Captain America, he led the charge against the Nazis and Hydra before being left frozen in the Arctic at the end of the war. He was eventually revived in the modern day and is now the leader of the Avengers, fighting for truth, justice and freedom.

Captain America's strength and durability push well past ordinary human limits

There has been a little debate over whether Steve is truly superhuman or just the pinnacle of human potential, but he can bench press several tons as a warm-up, tear through metal, throw around cars, and routinely hold up several tons of rubble. He has hurt Spider-Man with his punches, knocked out bulletproof humans, and damaged Iron Man's armor with his fist. His shield throws have destroyed vehicles, brought down helicopters, destroyed robots and dismantled tanks.

He is also ridiculously tough. He has been smashed through walls, had buildings dropped on him, and taken punches from Namor, Spider-Man, Iron Man and even the Hulk and survived. He has been caught in explosions at point-blank range without a scratch, and sometimes does not even notice being shot or stabbed until someone points it out. With his shield, he can take planet-level attacks like nothing. Thor, Hulk, Hercules, Thanos, Ultron and even Celestials have all tried to damage it and none have succeeded.

Captain America's speed, perception and shield skill make him nearly impossible to hit

Everything about Steve is superhuman, including his perception, meaning he is not just dodging bullets through reflexes but actually seeing them coming and moving out of the way. He is one of the fastest street-level heroes, routinely matching Daredevil, Iron Fist or Spider-Man. He can even get his shield to block bullets after they have been fired, block electricity, or block light-based attacks.

He is also a top 10 fighter in the Marvel Universe with one of the best fighting minds on Earth, able to become an expert in any weapon within seconds and a master of a fighting form within minutes. He has mastered every martial art known to man and moved on to alien fighting styles across the universe. He is a one-man army who has taken down whole teams of villains and matched up against Daredevil, Black Panther, Iron Fist and Shang-Chi.

The Predator hunts as a religion, and honor shapes every kill on Yautja Prime

The Yautja are a race of interstellar hunters who see the galaxy as their hunting ground and every species in it as potential prey. They evolved on Yautja Prime, a scorching, storm-ridden world of fire, beasts and endless competition, where survival was treated as a religion and those who thrived became legends.

To the Yautja, combat is sacred. They do not hunt for power or resources, they hunt for honor, and their code is absolute: never harm the unarmed, never kill the defenseless, always face a worthy opponent head-on. That honor has a brutal edge, since a worthy opponent can mean humanity's deadliest soldiers, acid-blooded aliens, or gods walking among the stars. Each Predator lives for the K'hande amedha, a rite of passage where young bloods travel to alien worlds to slay the deadliest creatures they can find. Survivors earn the title of blooded and the right to the galaxy's most advanced technology; those who fail are forgotten or hunted by their own kind.

Predator technology and physical power rival some of the deadliest beings in fiction

Their cloaking device renders them invisible, their shoulder-mounted plasma caster melts through concrete and steel, their wrist blades cut through armor like paper, and their smart disc slices through multiple enemies mid-flight before returning to their hand. They see across thermal, ultraviolet and pheromone spectrums, and when defeat is unavoidable they trigger a self-destruct capable of vaporizing entire city blocks.

The Yautja are far from one-dimensional. In Dark Horse Comics they have slaughtered herds of Xenomorphs and fought gods like Ahab and Tiamat. In Marvel they have stalked as Guardians, battled symbiotes, and crossed paths with Wolverine, Thor and Silver Surfer's heralds. Some have taken trophies from Superman and the Justice League, and others have stalked Gotham, forcing Batman to adapt to their methods.

Physically they stand over 7 feet tall and weigh more than 400 pounds of pure muscle, able to lift cars, tear humans in half and crush reinforced steel bare-handed. Their armor makes them bulletproof, their metabolism shrugs off toxins and extreme heat, and their reflexes rival any enhanced super soldier. Some clans have embraced genetic engineering to merge their DNA with their most powerful kills, while others remain purists relying on skill and tradition.

Comparing strength: the Predator hits harder, but Cap is not far behind

The Predator is easily superhumanly strong. It tears armored soldiers apart with its bare hands, crushes helmeted skulls with one hand, and can snap a Xenomorph's spine or rip its head off entirely, which matters given Xenomorphs are not weak by any means. In Predator Badlands, a Predator slices open the belly, cuts off the tail, and decapitates the Kalisk, a creature described as nearly unkillable. Predators can casually rip through tanks and throw around cars.

But Captain America is right there with him. Whatever you think of the human versus superhuman debate, everything Steve has done in the comics points to superhuman: benching a ton as a warm-up, tearing steel chains apart, ripping apart robots and machines, throwing his shield through trucks and tanks, pulling a helicopter out of the air, lifting cars, and battling Spider-Man, Iron Man and Rhino. This is a guy operating at the absolute ceiling the human body can produce, and honestly beyond it.

Durability tips toward Cap once you factor in that indestructible shield

Predators easily no-sell bullets and gunfire, survive explosions casually, and keep fighting after taking a bazooka hit, an energy blast to the gut, gunshots to the eye, or getting impaled by Xenomorphs. They truly do not stop until the kill is over.

Even so, it is hard not to give Captain America the edge here because his shield is literally indestructible. The Predator cannot damage it, and it is debatable how many of its attacks would even get past it given how good Cap is with the shield. If it blocks attacks from Thor and Celestials, it blocks attacks from a Predator. Take the shield away and Cap has still been smashed through buildings, jumped out of planes, and taken a hit from an angry Namor, all without lasting harm. Either way, he is very tough on his own.

Both are fast, but Cap's bullet-dodging perception pushes him further

Predators have routinely dodged bullets and automatic gunfire like it is nothing. Captain America takes it a step further, not just dodging bullets but actually seeing them coming and moving before they land. He has dodged electricity and blocked or dodged laser blasts, which, depending on how you scale it, could put his reflexes up toward light speed levels. That is a bit far-fetched, sure, but it makes the point that Cap is very good at this.

Twisting my own arm on it, I would say Captain America has a physical edge over the Predator overall once strength, durability and speed are all weighed together.

In a fight for skill, I think Cap's fighting mind separates him from the Predator

The Predator is a genuinely skilled fighter and hunter, one of the most dangerous warriors in the galaxy and more than enough to match Cap in the skill department. Even so, I think Captain America is the more skilled fighter at the end of the day, because he is not just the ultimate super soldier but also a top 10 fighter in the Marvel Universe with one of the best fighting minds on Earth thanks to the super soldier serum.

He can become an expert in any weapon within seconds and master a fighting form after a few minutes, and he has mastered every martial art known to man before moving on to alien fighting styles across the universe. He has even mastered a form of combat the first time he used it and outperformed masters who had spent decades practicing it. It is not just his skill either, it is the combination of skill, physicality and training. He once fought Cash, who had mastered every fighting style there is, and Cap dominated because of his physicality. He is a one-man army who has matched up against Daredevil, Black Panther, Iron Fist and Shang-Chi.

On weapons, Cap's shield gives him the edge even though Predator tech can injure him

The Predator definitely has weapons that can injure Cap. It has already been shown capable of injuring Wolverine, with a plasma caster powerful enough to blow bits off him with each hit and electricity that leaves him stunned and speechless, on top of blades that do serious damage. If it can injure Wolverine, it can injure Captain America too.

A lot of that gets countered by the shield, though. Captain America is the expert when it comes to that shield, knowing it better than he knows himself. It is the perfect weapon for a soldier like Steve, always returning to him regardless of physics or science, and it is the ultimate combination of offense and defense in a fight. It is the best weapon in this matchup, and Steve can use it like no one else.

My verdict: Captain America wins, though I would not call a Predator win impossible

I think Captain America takes this one. I do believe a Predator could beat him given the right circumstances, but Cap has faced plenty of bigger and more dangerous threats than a Predator. An alien like this is basically a normal Tuesday for him in Marvel's New York City.

He has thrown his shield through tanks, trucks and helicopters, blocked attacks from Thor, Hulk and even Celestials, sent Wolverine and Spider-Man flying across the street, and staggered the Hulk with his attacks. Steve Rogers really is on a different level. A Predator could beat Cap in theory, but I do not think it is going to happen here. Captain America wins.

Who do you think actually takes this fight?
