Hulk vs Juggernaut: Why I Don't Think This Fight Has Ever Really Been Close
Breaking down the strength, durability and comic book history between Marvel's angriest monster and Cyttorak's unstoppable avatar
When I strip away the story and just look at raw strength, durability and power, I think Hulk beats Juggernaut, and honestly I don't think it has ever been particularly close. Both characters have real wins over each other in the comics, but once you actually compare their feats side by side, one of them has a built in advantage the other simply cannot match.
Bruce Banner was never supposed to become a monster. He was a brilliant nuclear physicist working on a gamma bomb test for the US military when a young man named Rick Jones wandered into the test site. Banner ran out to save him and took the full blast of gamma radiation himself. Instead of dying, the radiation rewrote his entire body on a biological level, and now whenever his stress spikes or his anger explodes, Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk.
Hulk's strength has no fixed ceiling because it scales with his rage
The Hulk's biggest advantage is simple. The angrier he gets, the stronger he gets. His strength isn't fixed, it scales, and the longer a fight drags on the more furious and more powerful he becomes. Some characters in the comics have even suggested his power doesn't have a measurable upper limit at all, it just keeps increasing the more he loses control.
That is why Hulk has some absolutely ridiculous strength feats. His footsteps alone have caused tremors that threatened to devastate entire regions of the United States. He has held together the tectonic plates of a planet to stop it tearing itself apart, and one clash involving Hulk generated enough force to destroy a small planet. He has smashed apart asteroids bigger than Earth and traded blows with beings capable of threatening entire universes.
It isn't just lifting strength either. Hulk's punches are basically natural disasters, creating earthquakes felt hundreds of miles away and shock waves powerful enough to level massive structures. When he really loses control, entire battlefields start collapsing around him.
Hulk's power breaks laws of physics that shouldn't be breakable at all
What makes Hulk genuinely scary is that his strength sometimes applies to things that shouldn't be punchable to begin with. There are moments where his raw power has broken abstract concepts and metaphysical barriers, punched through dimensional walls and the barriers between realities, and shattered time space distortions. He has cracked force fields built to contain cosmic level beings and even broken constructs made from pure energy or conceptual matter.
There is even a moment where Hulk punches straight through spacetime, forcing his way through a sealed dimension through brute strength alone, no magic and no tech involved. That is part of why characters in the comics sometimes describe him as less of a superhero and more like a force of nature. Once his rage hits a certain level, reality itself starts having a hard time keeping up with him.
Hulk's durability and healing make him almost impossible to keep down
Strength is only one part of the equation, because Hulk is also ridiculously tough. He has survived nuclear explosions point blank, been buried under collapsing cities and walked away, and been blasted into space and kept fighting. There are moments where he has endured pressure and energy equivalent to a star and kept moving, and even attacks from some of Marvel's most powerful heroes barely slow him down.
If you do manage to hurt him badly enough, he heals. Hulk has regenerated from destroyed organs, massive internal injuries and even severe brain damage. Eyes gouged out grow back, shattered bones repair themselves, and the angrier he gets the faster his body recovers, which makes putting him down permanently almost impossible.
The green door ties Hulk's gamma power to a cosmic force called the one below all
Gamma radiation in the comics isn't just a random scientific accident. It is connected to a dark cosmic force known as the one below all, a primordial entity tied to destruction and the darkest side of existence. Gamma mutates like Hulk are linked to this power whether they realize it or not, and that connection is why Hulk has something called the green door, a metaphysical gateway to the below place, the realm of the one below all.
When a gamma mutate dies, their soul passes through that door and eventually comes back, which means Hulk has actually returned from death multiple times. Despite being known as a brute he is also surprisingly fast, catching sniper bullets with his teeth, grabbing rockets mid flight and keeping up with faster than light characters like Thor and the Silver Surfer. Instead of flying he jumps, and those jumps can launch him high enough to escape Earth's atmosphere. His signature Thunderclap move, slamming his hands together, creates a shockwave that can blast enemies away and rip hurricane force winds across a battlefield.
Juggernaut's power comes directly from Cyttorak, which is why he's so inconsistent
For the longest time Juggernaut was seen as maybe the strongest character in Marvel, the one guy who could potentially beat Hulk or Thor in any given fight. But he is also one of the most inconsistent characters in the comics. One day he is beating Thor and Hulk, the next he is getting outclassed by Venom, though that was '90s Venom, who was written so powerful he even beat Superman in a crossover.
Juggernaut's inconsistency actually makes sense once you know where his power comes from. It comes directly from Cyttorak, who decides in each moment how much strength Cain Marko actually gets. Marko was the resentful stepbrother of Charles Xavier who, while serving in the Korean War, stumbled onto a hidden temple dedicated to Cyttorak. At the heart of it sat the Crimson Gem, and touching it transformed him into Cyttorak's avatar on Earth, the unstoppable Juggernaut.
For this breakdown I'm assuming Juggernaut has the full force of Cyttorak backing him, because that is when things get insane. It has been said the power inside him is enough to command the universe, and with the Crimson Gem he has shattered entire dimensions.
Juggernaut has traded blows with Thor, World War Hulk and Cyttorak himself
Most of Juggernaut's reputation comes from trading with, and sometimes overpowering, Marvel's biggest hitters. He has stood toe to toe with Thor and overpowered him, and this is a Thor who fought Zeus for an entire month and wrestled the living embodiment of the Odin Force. He has beats tied to Yggdrasil, a hyper construct containing universes and planes of reality, and even Yggdrasil has been shaken and overpowered by Thor. Juggernaut has still matched that level of opponent.
He has thrown down with World War Hulk too, a Hulk whose power levels even the House of M Scarlet Witch couldn't match. Marvel went on record for years saying they believed Juggernaut was actually stronger than Hulk because of his Cyttorak connection. At his absolute peak, Juggernaut has wielded enough of Cyttorak's power to literally kill Cyttorak himself, and Cyttorak is one of the strongest magical beings in Marvel, capable of ending or recreating the multiverse and imprisoning Galactus.
His durability is just as extreme. He has tanked direct hits from Hulk and Thor, shrugged off Thor's godblast, and had omega beams from a powerful cosmic villain bounce right off him. Onslaught once admitted Juggernaut couldn't be killed, and he has been reduced to a skeleton and regenerated almost instantly. Doctor Strange's magic can't affect him, and even Eternity couldn't erase him. When Cyttorak pours even more into him he evolves into an even more powerful form, breaking down dimensional walls with his punches.
Comparing strength, I give Hulk the clear edge because his power keeps climbing mid fight
Starting with strength, I think Hulk has the clear advantage. Juggernaut is ridiculously strong, having overpowered Colossus, knocked around Thing, fought Thor and even overpowered versions of Hulk before, and in theory his strength is limitless since it is tied to how much Cyttorak is giving him. But Hulk's strength is limitless too, and his high end feats are simply better, from supporting a mountain weighing billions of tons to holding together the tectonic plates of Sakaar to supporting the weight of a star.
The real difference is that Hulk's strength increases with his anger as a fight goes on. He has regularly overwhelmed characters who were stronger than him earlier in that exact same fight. As I see it, "Juggernaut might be on the same strength level as the Hulk at the start of the fight, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be the same level 5 minutes later."
Durability is a toss up, but Hulk's new immortality changes the whole equation
Durability is a straight up toss up. Hulk can take an insane amount of punishment, but Juggernaut's body is supernaturally protected by Cyttorak, including a passive force field that prevents physical damage, though Hulk has gotten strong enough at times to bypass it. Hulk himself has taken the equivalent of a hundred thousand supernovas worth of energy, tanked a planet cracking scream from Black Bolt, taken hits from Galactus, and shrugged off beatings from Zeus and Thanos.
Hulk's healing factor scales with his anger, letting him regenerate from a literal skeleton or from being ripped in half. And Hulk is now literally immortal, with the green door confirmed reopened as a champion of the one below all, meaning he cannot be permanently killed and will always come back.
Their actual comic book fight history backs up my case for Hulk
We don't have to guess, because these two have fought a lot. Their first real clash was Incredible Hulk issue 172, where Juggernaut initially gets the better of him, tiring Hulk out and even trying to break his neck, which only makes Hulk angrier and stronger until he spins Juggernaut by the helmet and sends him flying into a mountain. Professor X shuts Juggernaut down telepathically before a clean finish, but it is basically a Hulk win.
In Incredible Hulk issue 402, Juggernaut gets his revenge, attacking Professor Hulk without his armor so Hulk doesn't realize who he is fighting and holds back, letting Juggernaut eventually beat him unconscious. But when Apocalypse transformed Hulk into War, Hulk became powerful enough to stop a Juggernaut charge outright. Their biggest fight, World War Hulk versus Juggernaut, saw Cain initially lose because he wasn't receiving full power from Cyttorak, then come back at full power for a genuine back and forth battle, until Hulk simply redirected his charge and let Juggernaut's own momentum carry him out of the fight.
When Juggernaut fought Immortal Hulk, Hulk was getting the better of him for most of the fight, and it took outside interference draining Hulk's gamma energy before Juggernaut could finally put him down. So Juggernaut can beat Hulk, and he has done it, but he isn't consistently beating him. Every time Juggernaut hurts Hulk, Hulk gets another chance to heal, and every time Hulk gets angrier his strength can increase again. "So yeah, I'm taking the Hulk. Hulk wins."
