Avengers: Doomsday Is Reportedly Adding Cameos, and a New List Names Tobey Maguire, She-Hulk, Wong and More
A pair of fresh scoops suggests Marvel is still adding characters to Avengers: Doomsday, with a long list of unannounced heroes now circulating online.
Avengers: Doomsday is reportedly getting a wave of extra cameos, and a newly circulated list claims to name what seems like a full list of the unannounced characters set to appear, from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man to She-Hulk, Wong and America Chavez. The list covers characters either added during principal photography or now, at the eleventh hour, during reshoots on the film.
Some of these names I don't consider unannounced at all, and a few absences are worth talking about too.
Doomsday's extra filming is reportedly about adding cameos, not just cleanup
Undoubtedly, some of the delays to Avengers: Secret Wars, which reportedly doesn't start filming until the end of September, are because Marvel is still working on Avengers: Doomsday. Recently I talked about how I hoped all they were doing were some pickup shots to clean up a few scenes, not major surgery on the story itself.
The latest update from industry insider Daniel RPK points in another direction. Responding to an earlier tweet that simply said he hoped the film was good, he acknowledged and confirmed that they are adding what he called a bunch of cameos to the film. That was the first of two scoops in the last 24 hours that seem unrelated and come from totally different sources.
The Doom Servant list names 17 unannounced Doomsday characters
The second scoop came from Doom Servant on Twitter, with an apparent full list of the unannounced characters who will show up in Doomsday. It opens: "Just heard this about unannounced characters in Doomsday." The names are Doctor Strange, Deadpool, Wolverine, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Photon, Captain Marvel, Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, Valkyrie, Hulk, She-Hulk, Star-Lord, Wong, America Chavez, Clint Barton and Mobius.
Doom Servant also said he is hearing mixed signals on whether we will get appearances from Nick Fury, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Wiccan, Speed, Clea, B-15 and X-23, among others.
Wolverine, Deadpool and Doctor Strange are effectively announced already
To be totally fair, I don't consider a couple of these names unannounced. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool have been involved in the Doomsday marketing twice now, at both San Diego Comic-Con and D23. If you were a little confused, as the audience seemed to be, about why they were showing up asking if they could be in the movie, that was Marvel unveiling that they are in the movie. They wouldn't have them doing skits like that if they weren't part of it, so you can take that as the official announcement.
We have also clearly seen images of Doom's followers, one of which has the third eye in his mask, and that is very obviously Doctor Strange. I guess Marvel Studios hasn't announced it, but they have unveiled the followers and witches and we have seen the concept art. Ipso facto, we know Doctor Strange is in the movie.
It may feel like Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man has been confirmed for quite some time, given all the plot leaks and behind the scenes set photos of him fighting Wolverine and Deadpool. But he is definitely not announced by Marvel, just included on this list.
Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan and Valkyrie are curious additions, while She-Hulk was my exclusive
There are some curious names on here that seemingly have no connection to the story and that we have heard nothing about, like Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan, Riri Williams and Valkyrie. Hulk was always somewhat expected to show up in Secret Wars, if not Avengers: Doomsday.
She-Hulk, though, was an exclusive I had over a year ago. I was the first to confirm that she is part of the team, and actually on Sam Wilson's Avengers.
Wong and America Chavez should be among the first heroes consulted about the Multiverse
Then there are names you would have expected in Avengers: Doomsday given their proximity to other characters, where scenes in the Multiverse Saga have set this up and they weren't mentioned before, like Star-Lord, Wong and America Chavez. Remember, at the end of Shang-Chi, Wong is part of the council alongside Captain Marvel, Hulk and Shang-Chi. If anything dealing with the Multiverse were to rear its head, Wong is one of the first people they would go to, and America Chavez has been training under him since Multiverse of Madness. Whatever questions Wong couldn't answer, America definitely could. They have firsthand experience.
So I have always found it hard to believe that after Photon, Monica Rambeau, is lost to the 10,005 at the end of The Marvels, one of the first places Captain Marvel wouldn't go is to Wong, to ask what he knows and maybe even use America Chavez to retrieve her. Towards the end of Multiverse of Madness, it seemed like America was honing in on how to use her power.
I'm not completely convinced some of these conversations haven't already happened off screen. You can imagine Nick Fury, the head of SWORD, losing one of his agents in Monica Rambeau to a different part of the Multiverse; he and Captain Marvel would want answers. At the end of Thunderbolts we find out there is an impending space crisis, and SWORD would be using all its resources. Wong and America may not understand incursions, but they would have key details other characters wouldn't, and you have to imagine that is one of the first conversations that would have been had, especially with that Avengers council.
Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye tease could point to a Clint Barton Doomsday cameo
As for Mobius M. Mobius, we heard he might actually have a scene in the upcoming trailer alongside Loki, and we have also heard we may see Doctor Strange there.
Clint Barton is an interesting one. Just a day or two ago, Jeremy Renner shared a shot of the Hawkeye uniform on his Instagram stories, with the Hawkeye versus Avengers theme playing in the background and no context. You could take that as simple celebration because Endgame is back in theaters. You could take it to mean he was filming a cameo in Doomsday, since that is what they are doing right now. Or you could take it to mean he is about to suit up for Avengers: Secret Wars. With no context, it is pretty impossible to tell which of the three he is teasing.
If this list is correct, though, it means he might be shooting some sort of pickup cameo for Doomsday. One recent plot leak mentioned a Tony Stark or Iron Man protocol that Vision apparently sets off in the third act to say, "Hey, look, 616 is going under. The incursions can't be stopped. Calling all heroes." That is the place you might expect Clint Barton to show up, maybe alongside Star-Lord.
Star-Lord could be the conduit to bringing in the Guardians of the Galaxy
Star-Lord's inclusion really begs the question of where in the world the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy are during all this. Even if they are off Earth, you have to imagine Marvel Studios is going to include Rocket, Groot and some of those other characters in Avengers: Secret Wars, so Star-Lord showing up may actually be the conduit to bringing that team in.
"I'll be very surprised if we don't see the Guardians before the end of Secret Wars," only because Chris Pratt has been emphatic that they are going to make good on the promise from the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that Star-Lord will return. That may be part of the VisionQuest series, but it is most likely Avengers: Secret Wars, and you have to imagine the first person Peter Quill would call if he needed help was Rocket.
Of course, in Battleworld they will all have their memories wiped, so it is a little unclear what relationships remain. Maybe you have the same friendships, just new memories going forward. Still, we suspected Star-Lord would show up in one of the two Avengers films, so if not in Doomsday, we will definitely see him in Secret Wars.
Nick Fury and Rhodey are probably not making the cut
For fringe names or newer MCU characters like Wiccan and Speed, it is pretty unclear whether they find a place in Doomsday, and Secret Wars is where I think they would most likely show up. Clea is probably in Doomsday whether she takes her mask off or not; she is probably implied to be the purple robed witch following alongside Doctor Strange for Doctor Doom.
As for Nick Fury and Rhodey, I just think that unfortunately they are not going to be part of the movie. This hearkens back to Kevin Feige's original comment that they realized not everybody will have a place in this film. In past Avengers ensembles like Endgame, the casts felt infinitely wide, but some fringe characters only got a line or two of dialogue, and others you would expect to interact in scenes didn't. There is only so much script and screen time, so eventually you have to cut characters rather than keep adding them. Just don't tell that to Marvel Studios, which four months before Avengers: Doomsday is apparently still filming and adding brand new cameos, according to Daniel RPK.
Which character on this list most deserves screen time based on the story, and which noticeable absence, like Tom Holland's Peter Parker, do you think should be in Avengers: Doomsday but probably won't be?
